Title: Any thoughts on tai chi?
Post by JenniferD on May 20th, 2007, 11:58am
I've been thinking of learning tai chi and have doing a lot of research. Anyone do it? Do you attend a class or use a video?

I think it would be pretty cool to do in the morning (hopefully not alone!).

Any input?

Jen

If you are interested in it, then I say go for it.  Learning something new, something that gets your body moving, and quiets the mind..

ahh food for the soul....

I've seen people doing this on the beach. Looks pretty funny.
I would think this would do alot for the circulation, disposition and so on. Couldn't hurt.  Enjoy.

I attended some tai chi classes for a while after years of Shotokan karate caused my bad knees to become even worse.

I found it to be very calming and the low impact movements were very good for toning of the muscles.  Very slow movements but a lot of control is necessary.

I would first get a DVD to see if it is something you would enjoy and if it is, check out either the YWCA, YMCA or some of the schools around the area.  Many of them offer classes for decent prices.

You might also consider checking out yoga which is also very cool.

Marta (my wife) did Tei-Chi in Austin TX before we moved back to Switzerland
I think she did it for a year or so………… in a class,

Now she is doing (if I have the name right) Power Yoga and from what she told
me she likes it better as a way to keep in shape and for stress reduction……..

Sorry can’t help you more………..  I will ask Marta to look at it if you like……
and answer you directly……..

Tai Chi isn't very complicated or strenuous.  It's a good thing to learn.

I've done Tai Chi using a video.  I really liked it.  Wave hands like clouds.

Tai chi is great if you learn it properly. However, its almost impossible to learn it from just DVD alone. Its a form of martial art. You cant learn say Tai Kwon Do watching DVDs alone and be any good at it. You need to have an instructor, preferably a good one.

Its best to watch a DVD first to get some idea then to attend classes. If you want to be serious about it even check out the qualification and experience of the teachers, not all teachers are the same.

You can learn the basic hand movement and leg work from DVD but you wont get the exact posture, the exact moves, how low should the hands be, what breaths to take when and the rest of the body movement with each move etc right.

Tai Chi means Big Air or Big Power, its about utilising internal power by movement of different muscle groups and air through breathing. Its fine art to get it right. Ideally you need to learn the basics of abdominal breathing as well.

It depends on how serious you are about learning and practising it of course. However, if you really want to get the benefit out of it for health, both physical and mental, then you need to attend classes.

Have fun and enjoy  :)

I really enjoy Tai Chi.  When I started, using a DVD, I had to hold onto things for balance.  Now my balance is improved, my flexibility is improved and I believe I may be an inch taller ;;D
Its relaxing and graceful, but doesn't really do anything for my headaches.

I took classes and found it very relaxing.

I also studied Taekwondo, Shotokan and a bit of Aikijutsu.

Wanna spar Cyn ;;D

I enjoyed the katas more than sparring, Dub.  The only time I enjoyed sparring was the week after I had broken up with my boyfriend who was a black belt in my class.  Being his junior, I was permitted to go full force where as he had to go with a controlled spar.  Loved it!!

Didn't you find it hard to go from Taekwando to Shotokan?  The stances in Shotokan are so much lower and the style isn't as flowery as Taekwando....that's why I enjoyed Shotokan.

Practiced a few times with my brother's Taekwando class and found their stances and punches very hard to get used to.
