Jerry Falwell died a little while ago. They found him in his office and couldn't revive him.

May he rest in peace.

I hope that he will have illuminated to him when he passes to the hereafter how much more he could have done through uniting people with the good news of Jesus Christ.

Scott

(and there is no nicer way to say that, than how I just wrote it)

Perfect on every level.

You kill me Rock.

He would have probably been a decent neighbor even though we agreed on nothing.

Thanks Chuck and Ivanov. I was too chicken to say it. He was a bigot.

He did more harm than good. Christopher Hitchens pinned him down rather well last night. He and his religious friends had little to do with religion. The Christian right is more right than religious.

With Jerry gone, I'm wondering who will take over the business of getting elderly women on fixed incomes to send them money. After all, if the old ladies weren't sending that money to Falwell, Robertson, and the rest. they might have wasted it on rent, food, medical expenses, etc.
I'm sure there'll be a candidate along very shortly as there is nothing at all that is too low and degrading for someone to do.

That guy was absolutely evil and fractured the separation of church and state at every opportunity. Living where I do, every day I see what happens when such people get hold of the government. It's ugly.

"The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones."

On balance, I'd say Jerry Falwell's score card looks a lot better than say, Michael Moore's

None of us are going to make it out of here alive...

But they key here is *who* reached more of the masses?  Moore or Falwell?  Moore is just an not a very nice person with a particular agenda to reach certain segments of the population.  Falwell reached the masses, so to speak.

Well, Michael Moore is another one I don't think much of. Him and Falwell both just used issues for personal gain without the slightest thought of what it might cost other people. Neither of them care.

I read something once that;

Very true.

I always found it weird that Falwell thought that Mark Foley fucking boys was 'nuthin' but a thang, chicken wang", but Clinton getting oral sex from a woman over 21 years old was a horrible thing.  Its a shameful day when having gay sex with underage boys is more accepted than getting straight oral sex from an adult.

I guess we know where Falwell stands on the gay issue, huh?

Apparently you can do whatever you want, as long as you fall on the right place on the political spectrum.  Reminds me of the airplane banner ad that flew over the University of Michigan's commencement ceremony a couple of weeks ago where Bill Clinton gave the commencement address.  It read "Choose Life, Not Hillary and Abortion".  I guess the 3000+ American soldiers that have died in Iraq don't count toward choosing life.

Falwell was to Christianity what Osama is (was?) to Islam.  Extremist, radical and divisive.

But I don't remember hearing about Osama stealing millions from his own people.  Not that Osama is any saint, but I challenge you to take this quiz and tell me that they aren't related.

Hmmm no-one asked. In this case RIP = Remain in Purgatory which is nicer than rot in purgatory. This man has done more to torture, harm and turn people away from religion than most would care to acknowledge.

For his family... you have my condolences for your loss. For the rest of the world.... ding-dong the witch is dead.

I believe your initial post was quite clear. The exclamation point pretty covered it ("RIP Jerry!").  Now that he's gone will those who have turned away from religion, turn toward religion? I didn't care for his approach, but people turn away for their own reasons. If they want to blame it on Jerry Falwell or some other jerk then fine but at best it is an excuse.

Then with that form of logic... any reason whatsoever "could" be considered an "EXCUSE"... interesting the approach of the religious zealots... where self thought and autonomy would be considered a sin, shameful and in some cases punishable by being shunned or executed.

If you're saying that then that is what you are saying. I didn't say that.
I simply said that if you want to use Jerry Falwell as your "excuse" for turning away from religion that's fine. But if it is truly that your so called "self thought" (whatever that is) led you to turn away from religion then say that is what led you there and don't blame it on somebody else's zealous behavior. Coming to a rational conclusion with regard to one's faith, or lackthereof, is what it is. Trying to point your finger at someone else for your conclusion is altogether very typical however for many things in our country however. So have at it.

Interesting thought.......like him or not.....agree with him or not.....he's now got one up on all of us. He now knows with 100% certainty if his beliefs and actions were correct or not.

and if "man" creates, enforces, and endorses religion... one might argue that it is because of man that we find religion... so therefore it stands to reason that it can be because of a man that we reject it.

So what?

It's each persons personal choice to an extent to follow whichever leader they so choose. Your argument reinforces the mindset of the fear driven... that it's okay to be talked into a religion by a human either through their actions or words, and not question... but... god forbid if you are talked out of it by one.

Tony

You have to remember that since the 1970s, the fat pig had nothing at all to do with religion but for scraping out the collection plate. He was the Father Coughlin of his time. A good case can be made that he was indirectly the cause of suicides among some homosexuals and fostering violence against them.

Falwell and the other intolerant con men who hide behind the pulpit, use Christianitiy to scare the bejesus out us. It works for some. FDR's famous quote: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself," has never been more appropriate.

Republicans have Falwell to thank for their current troubles. Too bad they needed to do so much damage to themselves in order to get elected. Falwell and the pious faith-based intelligence occupying the White House have done their best to do in the GOP for now. My guess is the GOP are breathing easier with his death.

Michael Moore versus Falwell? Moore's films aren't responsible for the pain, suffering, and familial divisions created by Falwell. He and his ideas did a lot to split up families along these lines....and worse.

He made Jesus synonymous with Jerry Falwell in many minds and turned many Christians into something they abhor.
