Title: first day of races!
Post by Teresa on May 6th, 2007, 11:03pm
I just got home from the first day of races at Madison International Speedway in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin.  I already want to be back at that beautiful track.  Some of the great things about today:

1) I got to be by racecars ALL DAY!
2) I now know what camber is and why the cars tilt their wheels.
3) I saw a toad almost get demolished on the racetrack (that toad had a death wish), but then, amazingly, the race ended right as the toad was getting to the first groove of the race track, so the cars came into the second groove to get off the track...thus the toad lived.  It was a heart pounding five or ten laps for that toad.
4) cute, young pit crew guys (and drivers) flirting...oh that is so much fun!
5) the smell of that racing fuel...all day long...there is nothing like it anywhere.
6) many other things that I can't even put into words right now.

Seriously, best job I've ever had in my life.  It is decided, next summer I will begin racing.  One of the divisions they have at the track is the "bandit" division, which is a front wheel drive, four cylinder car from before 1995 that is turned into a race car, with the only changes allowed to the car being safety.  It's the cheapest division to get started in...so next summer, I will be doing that.  And for the rest of this summer, I will be spending my Friday nights at the track in the pits learning as much as I can about the wonderful sport of racing!

Just had to tell you all!

hmmm.... wonder if that red lovingly-cared-for Mazda Miata would qualify? Then again, probably not a car you'd want to possibly destroy....  On the other hand, the hard top would help just a tad in rollover situations....  Too bad it's not 1996 - we could hijack your brother's car for it....  (amazing how I can make something seem so complicated!)

Nope, the miata is a rear wheel drive.

From the rules on the Speedway's website....

Quote:
General: This is a stock production class with a claim of $850.00 for any car. The
Bandit class is designed to be an affordable and enjoyable introduction into auto racing.

Car Eligibility: Any American or foreign made 1980 to 1996, front wheel drive
standard production automobile offered with a three or four cylinder EFI engine allowed.
Wheelbase maximum is 104 inches. No Honda CRX, convertibles, T-tops, two seat,
sports cars allowed. All wheel steer cars and special manufactured cars allowed only
with prior approval. It is the responsibility of the driver / owner to complete a
specification sheet during the initial inspection. Chassis (VIN number, wheelbase, control
arm lengths, etc) and engine (engine number, bore-stroke, EFI info, camshaft, etc) specs
required.

Engine and Drive Train: Engine must be stock for that make and model. Four cylinders
maximum. No turbochargers, superchargers or rotary engines. All engines use stock
motor mounts and be in stock location. Engine must remain completely stock. Wiring,
including data port and computer configuration must remain as produced. Stock air
cleaner is required. Stock automatic or manual transmissions with all forward and
reverse gears operating required. Stock, unaltered clutch and differential required.
Overflow tank located under hood required. A/C, smog pump and heater core may be
removed. VTEC engines may receive an additional weight penalty.
Weight Cubic centimeters Minimum Weight
0 to 1999 2200 lb. 2 valve OHC add 50 lb.
2000 to 2299 2300 lb. 3 valve OHC add 75 lb.
2300 to 2600 2400 lb. 4 valve OHC add 100 lb.
All weights include driver. Ballast weights must be securely fastened to rear seat
footwell using sandwich plate method.

Other rules such as roll cage specs, and tires I didn't copy.

That $850.00 claiming rule is rather restrictive. You'll have 2-300 in a good saftey cage alone. Also noticed fuel cells are "optional". I wouldn't run ANY car without a GOOD fuel cell.
