Title: Debate Post by BarbaraD on Apr 26th, 2007, 1:48pm Well, tonight is the big night -- The democratic debate... oh joy --- the news has been debating all day so I wonder what's left for tonight? Let's see, Hillary has to act human, Obomba has to talk intelligently and actually say something, Dean has to talk presidential (because of his age) and the others have to do something to make themselves known. And no one can pick on Hillary cause she's a "girl". They're gonna talk about the war and everyone is going to have to give where they stand and why (maybe). Then we get to have the Rep debate. That should really be interesting. With Rudy in there we'll get into abortion and all that fun stuff. And to think we've got another year and a half of this mess. Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Debate Post by LeLimey on Apr 26th, 2007, 1:53pm Why is it we only hear from politcians when THEY want something? We have our local elections here in a couple of weeks. you don't hear from these gobshites from one end of their term to the other and then all you get is the biggest source of natural gas since the North Sea ::) Give me strength NOT to persecute them ;;D |

Title: Re: Debate Post by aprilbee on Apr 26th, 2007, 2:00pm Its all a joke...I'm a registered Democrat, and have no desire to watch this debate....Rudy Guliani and John McCain (sp?) are the two best candidates and I hope the United States see that....I worry that americans base their opinions on what is said on the news at 6:00....instead of reasearch and actually listening to candidates' plans and desires for this country.... promises mean nothing to me...actions do I am the most non-political person you will ever meet...but I don't think this world is ready for a woman or a black president....I hope that doesn't come out wrong.... I just want the best man/woman for the job and the current president has made republicans a very easy target...its scary to me to think what is going to happen with the presidency, country, war, I can't say Merry Christmas and no one is American anymore, we're all from Africa and Asia and India I guess I'm Irish American even though my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were BORN and grew up in America....and well you get the point.....everything is about being PC...fuck PC....its ridiculous! Wow, I think I'll step off my soapbox now....sorry Barbara I don't want to hijack your thread...this stuff just gets under my skin I guess... thank you and good night! :-* |

Title: Re: Debate Post by Brewcrew on Apr 26th, 2007, 2:15pm We'll get to the general election next year, after the parties have nominated their candidates, and this is how I see the choices that will be offered: "Well, Mr. Diabetic, you can either have cotton candy or a Snickers bar." "But, I'm Mr. Diabetic. Either one of those things will kill me." "Sorry, those are your choices." "Okay. I'll take the Snickers bar. At least it has a few nuts in it." |

Title: Re: Debate Post by BarbaraD on Apr 26th, 2007, 4:55pm The bad part is they can promise anything and then blame not getting it done on the other party. We need change alright.... A BIG change. I think anyone who's been there for over 10 years ought to retire, quit or be impeached. We just don't need career politicians. We need NEW BLOOD in DC - and in our State's also. And campaign spending should be a BIG LAW. IT's getting terrible to spend as much as they do to get elected. And not owe any "favors" -- oh yeah right! And I've got a beautiful bridge in NY for sale - cheap. Think I'll join you at the video store. Hugs BD |

Yup! The only thing that will stop congress is term limits and I would suggest that the WHOLE current lot of them be thrown out and start fresh so the "Old Boys Club" dosn't pass along the corruption to the new ones. Kind of keeps the cancer from festering, so to speak. -P. |

Title: Re: Debate Post by Charlie on Apr 27th, 2007, 1:22am The last debate I actually sat through was the Nixon-Kennedy debate in 1960. The family voted for Nixon but mom and dad loved to hear JFK. It was the first tv one of course and a good example of politics of the time....Civil. I'm gonna wait and listen to a pundit or two or read a synopis. Too much, too soon for me. Charlie |

Title: Re: Debate Post by Sandy_C on Apr 27th, 2007, 12:49pm Didn't watch it, but from reading the newspaper and the news websites, I don't think I missed much of anything. Same old rhetoric. But, what worries me about the upcoming elections is this. We've had a republican controlled congress, both house and senate, with a republican in the white house, and look what we've got. Carte blanche to ramrod just about anything they want through. Now, we have a democratic controlled congress. If this country elects a democrat as President, same thing. What ever happened to the supposed "checks and balances" that our government was founded upon??? [smiley=huh.gif] Sandy |

Title: Re: Debate Post by testy01 on Apr 27th, 2007, 3:48pm Ugh! One of the few really good things about Saudi is that they don't have politicians. Mind you, the various Princes are just as greedy and out to get everything they can, but at least they don't act like they're doing you a favor. Jack |

Title: Re: Debate Post by john_d on Apr 27th, 2007, 5:30pm Didn't listen but I know what they said. Exactly what polls have told them we want to hear, filtering out anything that might possibly offend anyone. In other words, total bullshit. What a waste of time. I'd rather watch them digging ditches for an hour, that would tell me more about what kind of president they would make than that debate does. |
||
Title: Re: Debate Post by BobG on Apr 27th, 2007, 5:42pm Yep, screw whatever was said or not said during the debate. The elections are too far away to take any of the candidates seriously. I don't like any of them but the Demo's have better qualified candidates than the Repub's (at this time). Question.......no mater who wins, how will we address the winner? Ms, Miss, Mrs or Mz President? |

Title: Re: Debate Post by Charlie on Apr 27th, 2007, 8:35pm Term limits are a bad idea. They sound great until you face losing one or two great people. Sure some Jesse Helms types stick around but on the whole, our system works. Charlie |
||
Title: Re: Debate Post by testy01 on Apr 28th, 2007, 12:41pm Charlie I agree that the system works, at least mostly. My own issues concern campaign funding. This seems like an elephant in the living room that no one talks about. Corporations and other organizations donate enormous amounts of money to politicians, or at least their re-election committee. I'm expected to believe that the corporations and what-not don't get any return for their investment. I have a hard time swallowing that concept. It seems that elections are bought and sold. Regards Jack |

Title: Re: Debate Post by Charlie on Apr 29th, 2007, 1:29am Our own times pale in comparison when it comes to almost total corporate control of the govenment in times gone by. The last half of the 19th Century more than makes up for us.....not that we should pat ourselves on the back... http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/sigh.gif nothing is new..... Term limits became popular by especially by the right when they found out that after nearly 30 plus years, neo conservatives were largely in control after so long. So they said....hey! How about seeing to it that we limit the terms of those old geezers still in our way on the left so all those new and much younger neo-cons have a more than equal shot for a good time to come. After all, nothing else worked so what's to lose. Bad idea and it was for all intents and purposes abandoned when several artifically promised self-limits came to pass....nobody wanted that.... Charlie |

Title: Re: Debate[b] Post by testy01 on Apr 29th, 2007, 1:34pm Charlie I take your point about things having been worse in the past. I'm not an historian by any means but I have seen references to what you're talking about. As far as term-limits go, I'm somewhat divided on that. As you say, politics could lose someone very capable. On the other hand, what about various politicians that are popular but not good, as in being constantly accused of crimes? We lose them also. I understand your point but this could be argued either way. Regards Jack |

Title: Re: Debate Post by Charlie on Apr 29th, 2007, 11:49pm I understand your post Jack and it makes me squirm too but......you have to consider the side that screams for term limits; it'a almost entirely a neo-con or far right GOP bunch. All in all, I think I'll stick to my side. It's only self defense here. The GOP has had the Delays and Jesse Helms, and MacCarthys; not the Demorats. Those examples make the rest of them look like Boy Scouts. Charlie |
