On easter Sunday I went for dinner at my in laws, I could see in my father in laws eyes that he was dying (hes 90 years old)

No one else saw this, not even his wife. I think she didnt want to see it.

Yesterday he was diagnosed with lung cancer, Monday we will meet with the oncologist (SP?) and talk about a CBC test(I think its called) to see how far along it is.

His wife never liked him drinking or smoking, so every time we got together we would sneak off to the basement or deck for a smoke and a beer. there, we would compare who was on more meds.....can you imagine that?

I could type many threads about WW2 that he has told me. he was in the mix of the biggest battles......HE is my hero!!

Please give it up for Romeo Chase!

Oh Jonny, I'm so sorry to hear you and your family will be going through this.

The very first thing I would do, from past experiences, is contact Hospice.  They will hold you ALL up emotionally, help you to understand and cope and be of ever so much help to your father-in-law. Don't let anyone tell you that there is a "time-frame" for Hospice help.  It varies from owner to owner.  Inquire yourself to get the facts.

Thanks folks, the old dude is just like my Dad when he went to the hospital, he gave the DNR order as he was wheeled trhough the door.

When the doc told Romeo that he had lung cancer he said, "Its no big deal"

I think like my Dad....that he is just tired.

Just do what you do sunshine and continue to be his friend - sounds like the two of you have a hell of a relationship and you're what he needs right now.

You've got it. Continue being his friend and remain close, he will need it going thru this. That will probably be what he needs most, love and caring from those most close to him.

We will be praying for your whole family during this time Jonny.  I'm glad you are there for him.

Please tell him thanks for his service inWWII.  We are losing them so quickly these days, and  their experience and memories with them.  Get him to pass along as much as he can to you, and if he is up to doing so, if he would write of his experiences during the war it would be so valuable to the generation coming along [/i]if it would bother to read it[i].  Some would, and they would profit from it.

Yeah he is probably tired and don't care all that much anymore. He survived big battles in WWII drank, smoked and put up with you and still lived to 90. He sounds like quite a character. I hope his last days are pain free. :)

Haven't had to walk the cancer road with anyone yet Johnny. He is one of the survivors of what is still considered our nations greatest generation. He has everything our family can offer him, he's owed at least that.

What a wonderful life and a fantastic family he has got, especially such a great son in laws.

Drink to his life and to his attitude! Cancer at 90 for someone like him is " no big deal" indeed, compared to what he had experienced. Boy, I like this man!  :-*

Good on you for being so close and caring to him, Jonny.

Please do start the threads on his tales of the WWII, what would be a more appropriate way to celebrate his life ? and I for one would love to read them and to learn.

In the mean time, sending our love, our gratitute, our prayers and our salute to a real hero of a real heroic era.

Oh Jonny dear - I'm so sorry for your pain and the pain yet to come.  

Having just gone through this less than 6 months ago, I can well imagine how you feel.

Brew took losing his father-in-law (my dad) harder than I thought he would.  He told me dad wasn't just his father-in-law, he was his buddy.:-/

rave on, mr. romeo chase. my grandmother experenced this when she was 86, the doctors said,"say your goodbyes". when she was 96, i walked in to town with her, a mile and a half, for 1/2 a pound of butter, that she needed ! i would have paid for the taxi back, but she insisted on walking. love that spirit. andrew

I lost my dad this way and it's not going to be easy, but it sounds like Romeo is a tuff guy and if he's made up his mind it's no big deal, then it's not going to be for him. Just cherish the memories you have.

Still mourning my sister's death from cancer, it is very difficult for me to see this.  She would have been 37 year's old yesterday.  

I do hope and pray that his last days are painfree and filled with much laughter.  Sounds like he's had a long life and will leave a wonderful legacy.

Romeo comes home tomorrow, they give him five months at the most.

 Jonny I am sure you will be just what he needs to cheer him up and make his last days memorable.

   Brewcrew posted something when his Father-in-law came to their  home to die,  that will always stick with me.

I think it was a thanksgiving dinner and when the old guy who was also a WW11 veteran with many many stories to tell came  into the room Brewcrew stood up and said loudly and with a big grin...."There is a HERO in the house"

I hope you don't mind Jonny but someone earlier in this thread asked you to start another  of all the stories he has told you about the war...

to that person:   Jonny types with 2 fingers.  He would have to give up his day job entirely in order  to do that.  8)
