Title: shooter at VA Tech
Post by JenniferD on Apr 16th, 2007, 11:13am
My daughter is very upset. Her good friend Billy (they used to date) is the resident advisor at Ambler Johnson Hall, where one of the killings was.  They did arrest someone, but no news and Han can't get in touch with Billy.

Fock... my nephew is there.
Time to call him.

Han's friend Samantha who goes there couldn't call out, but checked in and said she's safe via myspace. You might try that if you cant get thru and if he has a myspace page.

My nephew is ok.
The dorm where some of the shootings happened is right next door to his.
Norris Hall is across the field.

His RA was in class in Norris Hall when it went down.  Shots were fired right outside his classroom.  He jumped out the window and ran across to the dorm.

His roommate is currently locked in Norris Hall.  A cop took his entire class upstairs (not outside) as they are not sure how many shooters there are or if they caught the guy.  He is still locked in a room in Norris Hall with a shotgun-armed officer with them.

The number going around the campus is about 20 shot, which differs from the 7-8 on the news.

I'm glad he's ok.  This is terrible.

News is updating now... 17 injured + 1 dead.
Sounds like the shooter has a pretty weak weapon, thankfully.

His RA jumped out a 2nd-story window.  Some of the injuries were a result of others jumping, he says.

Billy's page shows he is online and so is Hannah.  They just said on Headline News that the shooter is dead.  Waiting to hear from Han or Billy.

edit:  Hannah is not there, but she'll update me on her friends who are.

Oh fuck.  20 dead.

Title: Re: shooter at VA Tech
Post by Lobster on Apr 16th, 2007, 12:42pm
His roommate and 4-5 others are back now.  He clarified that his roommate was not in Norris.

Sounds like all but one of the deaths happened in Norris.

Norris is an upperclassman engineering building... so it is likely that most of the victims will be juniors or seniors.

He has been texting his upperclassman buddies, but no replies yet.

His RA that escaped Norris said it sounds like a fucking warzone, which is why they opted to jump out the window.

He is not sure how long the campus will be closed.
Just passed him the invite to drive out here with 1 or 2 of his friends for a week of golfing.  It would be nice to see him before his normal summer golf trip.

This is an example of the further-reaching effects when nutjobs get their hands on guns. There will be literally thousands of people whose lives will be forever changed by this whack job.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Jen.

I wanted to see something about VA Tech so I went to youtube and found this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1vMnsNzc5Y

I haven't been able to stop crying.

Is there so little respect for life anymore? One moment these were thriving kids... and now forevermore scarred if not dead.

This world.... it's so hard to take anymore... so much suffering. So much pain. I'm trying so hard to see any good in this... I can't.

Tony, this is a horrible event. The loss of kids with their lives ahead of them. The scars both physical and emotional for the survivors.

But, I have to try and think beyond that to wrestle with such an event. I think of my own friends in college and what each of us would have done to find out if each of us were okay. The love, the caring. There would have been yet other friends that helped others and heroically got people out windows or carried wounded, or simply held and hugged others through the horror. This is where the light is to be found -- young people who will forever have a higher understanding of why we must live each day as it could be our last -- and the effect they will have on thousands of others for good.

And pray for those that were taken today.

Scott

There is no safe place in this world, not even in your own home. Its all so sad.
I don't watch TV, because I can't take the meanness in the world any more.
I feel so bad for those kids and their love ones and friends. God help them get through this.

Bless your heart, Tony....

There is no good in an act like this....

It's becoming a mean world.

How to stop it.....who knows...

There is a safe place Elaine...one has to make it so.  The problem today is people are conditioned into thinking they have to have someone else protect them.  Call the police, don't resist, give them your wallet, cower and maybe they will not hurt you.  FUCK THAT SHIT!  I grew up going to a Quaker Meeting House.  In school I suffered horrendus abuse and when I decided to make a stand all that shit stopped.

I really feel (I say this without knowing all the facts) if the students (or some of them) took a stand, many that are dead would still be alive.  Think 9/11 and the plane that went down in PA.  Many more would have died if not for the brave act af a few.

I learned a long time ago that if you live in fear; it will find you.  Not a fun way to live life.

-P.

They're saying this is the worst campus shooting since that nut in the tower at the University of Texas years ago. He only shot 18 people. They've been analyzing this since early this morning trying to find someone to blame. I think they said it was the anniversary of Colombine. They've has some of those parents on.

The whole damn world has gone crazy.

I was about 10 when that happened. Back then, they had to film it, develop it and physically get it to someplace to broadcast the thing. It took some time back then and as I look at this latest horror, the old way sounds better to me. I decided not to have this thing on all day and read it tomorrow in the paper. I get enough violence on tv to last me for a long time.

Hope kids aren't exposed to this all day.

Mood has changed.
When it was happening Matt was pretty much like 'We are locked in, so we are playing Halo'.

Last night they released the names.  Caitlin Hammaren was an RA in his dorm.

This morning his mood was 'bummed the fuck out'.

They closed the campus for the week.  Everyone is going home.

Strange, I read that he spent most of his life growing up in D.C. :-/

from the AP:

Quote:
Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old senior majoring in English, arrived in the United States as boy from South Korea in 1992 and was raised in suburban Washington, D.C., officials said.

Good grief -- they've just had a bomb threat at Burris Hall (where the shooting took place). The police are surrounding the building now.... Don't know much yet. But they've had an intruder into the building. The bomb squad has been called in.

What next?

This thing is rippling across the country.  People are majorly jumpy right now.  Yesterday, the OU campus was locked down because someone saw a man walking across the campus with something long and black.  It turned out to be an umbrella.
