Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by Lobster on Apr 13th, 2007, 2:05pm PayPal is a way of paying for things across the net. When I transfer money to someone via my PayPal account, it sucks the $$$ from my source (credit card, checking account, etc) to their PayPal account. When I receive money from someone, I can keep it in my account for later use or can choose to have the loot transferred to my bank account. PayPal is the most common method of payment for person-to-person net transactions, such as eBay purchases or donating to websites or the like. There are some limited safety features built in, such as home address and bank account verification. Note that many people loathe PayPal, cuz if you are not all that net savy it is easy to be taken for lots of $$$ via a variety of scams. |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by fubar on Apr 13th, 2007, 2:27pm All that is true, but maybe the poster was asking about the specific references to PayPal on this site... The PayPal button below is a way to donate money directly to DJ to help defray the costs of running this site, his beer fridge, and the CH family yacht in the Bahamas. Or maybe just this site. I forget. |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by BarbaraD on Apr 13th, 2007, 2:55pm We all give what we can afford via Pay Pal or checks (address available by PM upon request) to this site. DJ (for years) bore the entire cost (and it's not cheap) of running this site and has never asked us for anything. But most of us have gotten so much out of it that we feel the need to give back a little. So if you have a few bucks to spare, hit the paypal button and help DJ (they're expecting a baby and you know how much babies cost these days). Don't want OUR baby to run short of nappies.... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by Sandy_C on Apr 13th, 2007, 3:20pm You can pay for many things that you find on the internet using PayPal. I have mine set up that whatever I might want to purchase or donate to, the money is taken from my credit card. I prefer not to have my checking account numbers out their for anybody for any reason. I just feel my credit card is a little safer. Anyway, you can donate to DJ and this website by clicking the button at the bottom of the page. You will have to establish your "account" with PayPal, from then on, it's easy. I just paid my registration to the OUCH convention in Richmond using PayPal, and have no worries about it. Sandy |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by Mac_Muz on Apr 13th, 2007, 4:12pm If you set up a pay pal account, beware if they send you e-mail, as the site like any site can be spoofed... If you set up an account you always go to it and sign in and never reply to to things they send you asking about accounts... It looks like you plan to set up an account to me.. That's fine, but when at odd times they appear to send you mail don't trust it just because.... I get about 20 spoof e-mails from someone who look like them each week, and haven't had an account in 3 years... |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by George_J on Apr 13th, 2007, 7:03pm It really isn't scary. We use it all the time for all kinds of things. Probably half the things we buy anymore, we buy on the web either via PayPal or cc . The only thing to remember is NEVER reply to any e-mail that purports to be from PayPal, and NEVER click on or respond to any links in those e-mails. You'll get plenty. We all do. They're ALL from scammers (phishers). Just flush 'em. In fact, the phishers don't even know you actually have a PayPal account--they're just sending out jillions of emails and hoping they get lucky. PayPal itself is double-blind. The recipient never sees your bank account or credit card information. You put money in your PayPal account from your bank/credit card. You send money to a recipient. He or she gets only what you send. Your bank/credit card information is known only to PayPal, and cannot be accessed by the recipient. Remember, also, that using a credit card to put money into a PayPal account or for any other 'net transaction is a good idea for another reason--your liability for fraudulent charges is limited to fifty dollars. So if you're worried about your bank account information getting out somehow, that might be a better option. Look--when you go to a restaurant, you give your credit card to a complete stranger who might, conceivably, do something nefarious with your cc information. Life's full of risks, but as risks go, this one's pretty minimal, as long as you practice good sense. Again--just ignore any email's that purport to be from PayPal, no matter how ominous they sound. Best, George |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by artonio7 on Apr 13th, 2007, 8:13pm Are there fees associated with a PayPal transaction? Is there a fee for spending via PayPal? If I opened a PayPal account to receive money is there a charge per transaction? Is the charge proportionate to the amount of the transaction or is it a set rate per transaction? |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by sldrswyfe on Apr 14th, 2007, 1:30pm Thanks George...you put it into perspective...and thanks for taking the time you did. I am so leary of the internet....and so new to it. Im hypervigalant about scanning for virus' every three days, etc. My first inclination has been to learn what NOT to do...and to protect my system. And handing out credit card info always nerve wracks me...but you are so right about it being done...anywhere. I have thought about that. Anyone can write down your numbers and use them over the phone, net, etc. And what T-shirts?? I didn't know CH.com had stuff....I know OUCH does... [smiley=huh.gif] |

Title: Re: Pay Pal... Please explain someone... Post by Charlie on Apr 14th, 2007, 8:48pm Sorry Sherri but "spoof" email as ebay calls it....they own paypal too.... is a regular thing that everyone gets. When I got on ebay, it began. I was just lucky enough to not open paypal email....they rarely email us. When you get something like that from paypal telling you that your account needs you or that if you don't fix up something, the world will come to an end DON'T OPEN IT. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/nono.gif Delete it immediately. If are worried, go to your paypal account the way you normally do. Never click on a link in email for paypal. I rarely open any email that I don't know. These geeks here know more than I. One thing I learned is to not be terrified of your system. It's a good thing to back up stuff on disc if you can. Even I can do it. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/cave man.gif Hope you're feeling better kid. Charlie |
