Title: Small Triumphs
Post by LeLimey on Mar 27th, 2007, 2:50am

as a lot of you know, I've been pretty ill since last November as a result of which I haven't been able to drive - simply because I didn't have the strength and I wasn't stupid enough to risk potential consequences.

It's been very tough for me being dependant on others to do anything or go anywhere but I've just had to accept it.

Well..... yesterday, for the first time in FIVE MONTHS!!! - I got in my car and drove! I can't tell you how exhilarating it was! I only drove into Grantham (about 13 miles) and back but the sun was shining, it was hot, I had the windows open and the stereo BLASTING and I haven't felt that alive in ages! It was - incredible! I couldn't stop smiling I felt so happy.

Needless to say I paid for it, I completely knackered myself and slept for three hours but it was SO worth it and I'm going out again today! I'm intending heading down to Margate this weekend for my friends sons birthday party on Sunday and that's just over 200 miles so I want to build up to that.

I just feel so great I had to share it with you all!

Helen

Warm weather, stereo blasting, and a full tank of gas . . . .who needs a man??

Perhaps you should talk to Teresa - she might be able to find you an open seat in the NASCAR series. :o

Your description of how it felt yesterday brought a little tear to my eye. Getting behind the wheel and just GOING can be a wonderfully liberating feeling. Your little soliloquy took me right back to the age of 16 when I had my first car.

Windows open, full tank of gas, stereo blasting - who needs a woman? (Oh, snap!)

Why am I reminded of Red Barchetta by Rush?

My uncle has a country place, that no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm, before the motor law
And on sundays I elude the eyes and hop the turbine freight
To far outside the wire, where my white-haired uncle waits.

http://bestsmileys.com/cars/5.gif

Jump to the ground
As the turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind,
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me, an old machine ---
For fifty-odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining car
A brilliant red barchetta, from a better, vanished time
I fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime...

http://bestsmileys.com/cars/8.gif

Wind in my hair ---
Shifting and drifting ---
Mechanical music ---
Adrenalin surge ---

http://bestsmileys.com/cars/3.gif

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

http://bestsmileys.com/cars/23.gif

Suddenly, ahead of me, across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires, to run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase

http://bestsmileys.com/cars/2.gif

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud
With fear and hope, Ive got a desperate plan

At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded
At the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle
At the fireside...

Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace...

YAY! That's happy news, lovie. One step at a time... and you'll be back to your old self in no time...

I drove ONCE with an Englishman on his home turf of Haslemere . . .

I'm SURE that's when I began getting gray hair and lost at least 10 years of life on that drive . . . .

I can't drive and listen to that song.  My foot gets too heavy.

Actually, I started to post "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" but there are only so many liberties I am willing to take with my life.

You know the song...

Everybody says that there's nobody meaner
Than the little LeLimey from Pasadena

Oops :-X  I think I'm in it now.   ;;D

I'll have you know I didn't go over Seventy five once! I was very sensible on Monday however I went out again yesterday and lets just say I blew a few cobwebs out of my little baby  ;;D That car goes from 0-60 in whats that smell and it corners like a dream, sticks to the road like glue and is the most fun way to lose your licence I know! I definitely overdid it yesterday though, I was wiped out within an hour of getting home and I actually went to bed early!  :o

I obviously need the practise so I shall go out again today  ;;D

I can't tell you how much I'm loving getting some independance back!

(PS Um... I blew up a speaker yesterday too  :( Wasn't my fault, it was Queen!)

I'm very happy for you Helen :)

Now since I'm sick with the most horrible head cold I've ever had in my life, would you run some movies back to the service station, take Lily to Karate, drop off some packages at the Post Office and then pick me up some orange juice, magazines and a pizza?

Thanks!

;;Dme

oh, and could you please make sure the pizza has that spicy sauce?  It'll clear out my head for about 2 hours so I can get back to werk. :-*

Oh I've just had fun!
Coming back from Grantham I let a Porsche Carrera in front of me at  roundabout and the bloke driving it thought he was really the mutts nuts... ::)
So anyway, I stayed right up his arse, he even dropped a gear t try and accelerate away but I kept up with him and the two of us were roaring down the road at 90 - but you see I KNOW that road and he obviously didn't! About 200 yards before a speed camera I slammed on the anchors and he thought he'd finally beaten me and sailed through the speed trap at 90 (60mph) zone with his hand out the window waving bye bye to me! I followed at a nice sedate 59mph and once out of the speed camera range I waved back with a nice Churchillian salute  ;)

Think I pissed him off big time  ;;D

ROFLMAO!!! Well done, Helen.  I'm glad you are enjoying getting back into life.  This reminds me of when I was in high school.   My best friend and I built this little Hornet into a pretty hot little rod.  I mean pistons, cam, split header with dual exhaust, the works.  Even though it only had a six cylinder, it could wax most of the "muscle cars" in our area, at least in the short run.

One afternoon, we were going into Alexandria (Louisiana) from LeCompte on Hwy 71.  Just before you go into Alexandria, there's an overpass.  At the other side of the overpass, there was ALWAYS a policeman running radar.

Anyways, this mamma's boy with an attitude in an obviously stock camero or something to that effect pulls along side and kind of guns it and let off a few times.  We reciprocate.  Dude asks us what is under the hood and we say 6. He laughs and thumbs us up to race.  Sammy and I just looked at each other and laughed and gave him the thumb back and off we went.  At first we dusted him, but then decided to play around with him.  We were making him work for it right up to the overpass, then shut it down and let him blow past.  I bet he thought we blew an engine or something.  As we crested the overpass, there was the person we had raced, being pulled over.  We just honked and gave him the thumbs up as we drove by.

LOL  I hadn't thought about that in years.  Now I'm sitting here with a big smile.  Thanks Helen.

Glad to read this.  Am picturing our rides to Grantham.  However, I cringe every time I have to remember my run from the train station to the ASDA and then running back up the hill in absolutely sweltering heat just to buy that damn camera chip.  I thought I was going to die.  LOL

But at least I felt like I knew my way around and could do some things on my own - takes a lot for me to get to that stage!!

I miss you............................

Have to work this weekend but can we talk soon?

Love and hugz,
Carrie

I remember that too - then the breakneck trip back to Bingham just to check LOL Did you notice Matt stayed VERY quiet?! I think he was buttock-clenching  ;) Let me know what you're working next week and we'll plan a good old chat!

Title: Re: Small Triumphs
Post by Lizzie2 on Mar 29th, 2007, 2:23pm
LOL yes he was quiet.  I think we scared the shit outta him! ;)  I was anxious because I thought we were going to miss the train - and we did!  lol  And I lost the damn camera chip anyhow because I had gone back inside to grab my long sleeve shirt or something like that - and we never did find that blasted thing!  But at least they got their passport - this just hours before Matt had the little money mishap......oh dear.....  That day had rough moments for all of us I think!  LOL  Had to be because Dape was over the night before, making us all tired and sending a bad luck omen over our group!   ;;D  (I'm kidding, Dape!!!)

Next week I just work Wednesday - I'm sure I'll have doc appts because I always have at least 2 every week, but otherwise I'll have plenty of time off.  Oh and tonight I'm going on a 2nd date....... ;) ;)  ;;D  Wish me luck!

Miss you!!  Glad you're feeling better and are getting out and driving around.  Today here is a day outside very similar to what it was like when I was there.  I wish you could come visit me, too!!!  I won't be able to go to the convention because that wedding I told you about back in September is that weekend - my best friend from Ohio - so we'll be down the shore the entire week before the convention, and then on Friday we have to drive out to Cleveland.  (Vermilion, to be exact.)  Then I'll be coming home from Ohio on the Sunday of the convention.

But maybe some other time!!!  Yes let's chat on the phone this week if you're up for it!!

Hugz,
Carrie :)

Make no mistake, that little lady can drive...... the traffic there scares me, and I've driven in Mexico.....she scared me, but not as bad as the other drivers over there. One woman tried to cut her off while we were there and called her a bitch when she passed us. Helens response..." Bless You"......thats class.

LOL Matt - just wait - someday you'll have to ride with me, too!  I was a little surprised when I got over to England that Helen and I drive the same way, but I don't have a stick shift car.  I work in the city, ya know, and stick's a pain - but I sure do put the pedal to the medal! ;)  (Well...not so much anymore since I got the ticket and the accident - I don't have Helen's charm when it comes to talking my way out of trouble - but it's probably because I've never spent much time getting into near as much trouble as she has!!  hahahaha)   ;;D

Missing all of you.....
