Title: Cortisone injections
Post by Sandy_C on Mar 16th, 2007, 12:35pm
Hi all.  Just got back from my orthopedist, checking out my right knee.  Unfortunately, nothing more can be done for it, so total replacement is in the offing.  I had my left knee replaced 9 years ago, so no big deal as far as I'm concerned.

I'm holding off the surgery until at least the end of the year.  I've got my daughter's wedding in September, and all of the planning before hand, so I can't be laid up right now.  Not to mention, not knowing whether my stupid insurance company will pay for anything, I can't afford both wedding and knee replacement.

Doc gave me a shot of cortisone in the knee.  I've never had this done before, and don't know too much about it.  Has anyone had this done?  What can I expect in the way of pain relief and mobility?

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks

Sandy

Hi Sandy,
Drop Carrie - Lizzie2 a pm, she has had a lot of trouble with her knees and has had all sorts of treatments so she'll be abe to give you the best advice re options until you can have it replaced I would think.

I hope you don't suffer with it too much in the meantime
lots and lots of love

Thanks, Helen.  Will do.

Hi Sandy, Well - my bloods are still up and down like a tart's drawers in spite of me taking more pills and potions than I have hours in the day to swallow - but I've been out of hospital for two weeks today so they're not slipping as fast as before so I'm thinking I'm on the mend (yes I know - famous last words! I'm touching wood, holding the cats paw 'cos I don't have a rabbit and crossing my eyes so hopefully I'm covered LOL)

I'm feeling pretty good most of the time though and I've got loads to look forward to so my spirits are high and I cannot WAIT until Richmond!  ;;D

Sandy - You can wait until my dear bride sees this thread for her official position, but she had a cortisone injection in her tennis (actually mosaic) elbow last week. She is reporting an incredibly positive difference.

God, I love Brit speak!

Heard of touching wood and crossing fingers (not necessarily eyes), but what's with cats paw instead of rabbit.  Everyone knows that only rabbits have lucky feet.

And what the heck do tarts drawers have to do with it?
;;D

The cat's paw was improvisation 'cos I don't have a rabbit!

As for up and down like a tart's drawers - it was my way of saying my bloods swing from high to low rather dramatically LOL - it was more picturesque though don't you think?!  ;;D

Yes indeed, several times in the left, bunches in the right.  I'm about 3 - 5 yrs from right replacement.

Always helped WHEN they hit the correct area.  If it's a miss it dosen't do shit.

Good luck

So, conceivably, if this shot works, it can buy me a nice chunk of relatively comfortable time?

You're saying you are three to 5 years away from replacement.  Are you going to continue to get the shots until then?  Can you continue that long?  Reason I ask is that ideally, I would love to put the whole replacement thing off until I hit Medicare - and I'm almost 61, so I have 3-1/2 years to go.  Can this be done???

Ohhh, hope, hope!

Thanks for the positive response!  I've been a little down today since doc said that replacement is my ultimate option.  I'm looking for any way to postpone for another 3-1/2 years!

I wanna hear!  I wanna hear!  Right now, I need all the good information I can get!  I want to postpone this thing until Medicare kicks in!

Thanks

Picturesque.. Oh yes, much more picturesque.  I'm going to start a list of British phrases, descriptions, etc.  You guys are much more interestingly linguistic (is that a correct phrase) than we colonials are.

Love ya

My surgeon, who is also a pro sports doc, says I can have 2 a year, up to 5 in 2 years.  So, these will help to keep the inflamation down help to lubricate at the same time.  Feels great the first day, and hurts like hell on day 2 and 3, then starts feeling better again.  I'd be cripple without these.

My doc is a sports doc too, (don't know about pro - but they handle all the local high schools and colleges).  He said that between now and September (my daughter's wedding) that I should come back in for another shot.  That means from March to September -6 months, then another shot before the wedding.  Do these things last that long?

I'm sorry.  I guess reading through my own posts, I'm grasping at the golden ring here.  I guess I just want someone to say, yep - works like a charm, and yep-you can go forever on one shot.

Oh well, reality is now clicking in.

Thanks for the info.  I'll keep you posted - so far so good, but from what you said, tomorrow may not be quite so nice, but it gets better.  This is all I'm hoping for.

Sorry for the delay in reading this.  I have lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow, but in my case it's mosaic elbow).  The tendons are pulling away from the bone (on my NON-dominant arm) and it's amazingly painful. Couldn't even lift a cup of coffee without pain.

Wore a band on the forearm for 4 weeks as instructed - some relief but not much.  Cortisone shot last Thursday and have absolutely no pain, not even a twinge, right now.  Doc says it may be all I need or it may come back and then we research other options.

I was skeptical but I'm a believer now.

I too had tennis elbow - caused actually by grounding a golf club repeatedly until I learned how to hit the bloody ball! [smiley=laugh.gif]

Had cortisone too and it did an amazing job.

Hope it works for you Sandy.

Hi all.  Well, today is going great!  Pain is drastically reduced, and I even slept through the night without waking up with knee pain.  I have one area on the inside of the knee that is still a little painful, but nothing like before.

Convinced me!

Hope this thing lasts a loooooong time!

I'm a happy camper today!   ;;D

It really is amazing isn't it?

Just don't overdo since you don't have pain.  The injury/problem is still there . . . .
