Title: ? For Our Computer Gurus
Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Mar 14th, 2007, 7:59pm
I have this wonderful new computer and in purchasing it, I have the opportunity to have the Vista programme for free.  It was part of the package when I bought this machine.

Curious to know what y'all think of Vista?  Should I install it or just stay with the Windows XP?

I have until the end of March to do this free of charge - after that, I would have to pay for it.

Thanks in advance.

Carol

No personal experience here, but I've heard horror stories about Vista. People who have had to replace programs that ran fine in XP but would not function in Vista.

I'd check with the manufacturers of all of your software (to see if it's compatible) before making the leap.

I'm no guru, but I have Vista Home Premium already installed on my new computer.  Upgrading from an older operating system can make for a few glitches, but I absolutely love it.  The graphics are great, and so far, I've found no problems regarding compatibilities with the programs I need to use.  Of course, my old computer uses Windows 98, so it's a brave new world.

Vista rocks, but you gotta have stones to run it.

I'm an MCSE, so I have no problems dealing with it, and it is very stable an usable.  However, a lot of hardware doesn't have proper drivers yet (all-in-one printers, etc) and some programs haven't been updated to run well with Vista yet (they run fine in compatability mode, but you gotta know how to do that...)

I say it's good as long as you aren't overly dependent on an application or piece of hardware that hasn't had Vista drivers published yet.
The interface is stunning, the graphics are awesome.  The performance is herky-jerky sometimes, but I love it anyway.  MS did a great job with Vista.  It certainly is more secure, no matter what the a-holes say about it.

If history has taught me anything, it is NOT to touch Vista, until most of the bugs are worked out of it.  Too new to be viable, yet.

IMHO

I'm in my second career as a custom computer builder.  We also repair all makes and models.  Our recommendation to our customers is to wait until the first patch comes out.  We're the only computer store in our city that still offers a new computer with XP and not Vista.  Business has never been better.  Most of the horror stories are true.  There are even incompatibility issues with Office 2007 and Vista, and they're both Microsoft products!  It's like it was when XP first came out.  It'll be the best operating system once the bugs are all out.  Until then, patience.  There's plenty of time to jump on Vista.

It appears that a lot of Govt. agencies won't even touch it yet.

What's the rush? .........and why do they insist on releasing an Operating System before it's ready?

With the money they're making... they shouldn't use the consumer to find and fix the problems. IMHO

I will wait before I use Vista.

with warm regards,
Tony

I have run Vista on one of my machines for 8 months. It is not yet mature enough for me to recommend it. Although Vista Service Patch 1, code named "Figi" is due out pretty soon. Hopefully it will fix some of the driver and DRM issues. But then on the other hand, being Microsoft. It may not.
For the time being I am sticking with Fedora Core 6 Linux on all my other machines. Until they come up with something as good. Or better.
YMMV
