Title: Credit reports  ...
Post by ClusterChuck on Mar 5th, 2007, 7:15pm
Reading Jonny's thread about giving out his wife's ss number got me to thinking.

How many regularly check their credit report?

How often??

With whom??

Just curious.  I have been thinking of signing up with someone, so I can regularly find out what mine is like.

I already did the free one, a while back, so I can't go that route again.  The link for the free one is
www.freecreditreport.com

Yep Chuck... I went the free credit report route... if anyone else decides to go that route... remember that you must cancel by using the phone number provided within three days, or you will be billed.

with warm regards,
Tony

I check yearly as well.

Were it not for the one I pulled almost 3 years ago, I wouldn't have found the credit card bill for over 8K that I never opened.  It and a few other minor errors took about 2 years to clear up, but I did it.

Oh....BTW...law states you can pull a free one yearly from all three major reporting agencies....also, if you are denied credit, then you take that rejection letter and you can get another free report from all three.

I am a member of Prepaid legal services.  One of the many things they do is go out monthly and check Ted's and mine credit reports and tell us if there is any activity.  They also do wills and living wills etc.

I get asked ssn for loan applications, getting son into school registered every year he has to show his ssn.

Chuck we use experian! Its good too. They send you a email when ever your credit is touched.
Here is a story for you. Buddy went and borrowed some money one year to go to the race on, not telling me. Well he got the loan, and I got the notice through email from experian.
I call him up at work and tell him someone has hit our crdit and borrowed a good amount of money. I tell him to get to their office and tell them its not us. Well about a hour later he calls me and tells me, he borrowed the money. I won't tell ya what I said after that...You get the picture. Its funny now but it wasn't then. Its good for a lot more reasons than just adinty theft.
It is worth the money to join.

Redd's right, you do not have to sign up for a credit report service. You can check your own credit for free each year from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion and it doesn't show as an inquiry.

annualcreditreport.com

plus, for $5 you can get your credit score.

check it every year, its your right

No Jonny not gay . . . . just unmarried.

Most married guys here mention their wives more often than once year!

I've never gotten one. Probably will someday.

Must be okay. I get offers for everthing under the sun every day because they tell me how great it is. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/die laughing.gif

It could be a good sign (getting the offers) or a bad sign.  Their not exactly picky about extending credit.

My wife works at one of the big three.  Out of all the possible places to give your SSN online, they would be about the safest (any of the three).  Don't fall for the fake sites that try to get you to sign up for paid services.

Chuck I have my credit reports monitored on a daily basis with all the major agencies for a small monthly fee.

Not so much as to know my credit ratings but to know who is accessing my reports. Any inquiry by anyone is sent to me immediately.

Its pretty amazing who actually looks at this stuff. Customers, Competitors, companies, employers, insurers even individuals willing to pay the fees for access.
In just the past 2 weeks my reports were accessed 4 separate times by various entities at 2 different agencies all legit. I recieved separate notification for each the following day. None of them had I had contact with regarding credit matters.
This is not something you are made aware of in the free reports.
Its also a good defense against Identity theft as I know who, what, when and where.

Thanks guys. I'll keep your stuff in mind.

I never do banking of any kind on line. I hate it and there have been some crappy "fees" or something that I read about......maybe here, come to think of it.

I use one of my credit cards when I buy socks but that's about all the on line business that I do.

Want a free credit report? Go buy a new car. The dealer will get it for you. And, if you spend enough money they might even show the report to you.
