Title: One of those 4 star days UPDATE Post by Redd on Feb 28th, 2007, 10:37am ok....so I have to call in late to work this morning...no biggie right... anyway I get myself back together go out and try to start the damn car...turn turn turn spit sputter spit blahhhhhhhh damn thing won't start. It's not that it's cold...it just doesn't seem to be getting enough gas to start. Full tank, just filled it up yesterday. Call back into work to let them know I'll be later than I first bargained for. Called my garage, called the towing place to put Fred on alert...haha. Stu said to hang tight and he'll come over to take a look at the POS before I spend money to tow the damn thing 4 blocks. Just yesterday I was going over my finances to see how much of a car loan I could afford. Looks like I'm going to need to buy one sooner than expected.... |

I'm not mechanically inclined but if it's fuel injected, pressing the gas while starting will in time foul the plugs I think. Difficult starts sometimes bring a gas pedal tapping, which seems to happen more in winter and in time, it suddenly won't start. Take a look at them, replacing can bring it to life quickly. Just a thought. |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days... Post by Redd on Feb 28th, 2007, 10:59am Stu came over and it appears to be dodgey fule pump. He can hear pump hum but thinks it's probably on it's last few days of life. Looks like I'm going to need to find some quic financing and purchase a car... Any Male clusterbud want to make a fast trip to WI to help me find a good used car today so they don't try to rip off this poor female? |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days... Post by Lobster on Feb 28th, 2007, 11:27am That blows hard Redd. I hope it is not the pump. My fuel pump went on my beater a few years ago. They had to drop the gas tank to get at it. I ended up paying about $600 at a non-dealer garage. |
||||
Title: Re: One of those 0 star days... Post by Redd on Feb 28th, 2007, 11:33am I'd rather put that 600 into the downpayment on a different vehicle |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days... Post by Gator on Feb 28th, 2007, 12:41pm Pegg, sometimes, it's better to just buy a new car than to keep pouring money into an old one. Especially if you have to pay someone else to work on it. Fuggin garages rape you on labor. I just replaced the fuel pump on the wife's Explorer last month. The garage was going to charge us $450. I bought the part for $129 and replaced it myself. Dropping the gas tank on a vehicle sucks, but it's better than spending an extra $300+ clams. |

Title: Re: One of those days...NEED ADVICE FAST! Post by Redd on Feb 28th, 2007, 4:17pm http://application.lendudasmotors.com/details.php I;m in the middle of negotiations for this ^ I've talked them down 1300 on the price already, but I'm not happy with the monthly payments. I've told them that I'm willing to put down an additional $250 if they can lower the price of the vehicle to get me into my monthly payment range. What do you people think? |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by BB on Feb 28th, 2007, 4:29pm Keep bargaining and dont back up. Your offer to increase the down payment to reduce the monthly repayment sounds perfectly reasonable to me. If they want your business they will try to accommodate you. Car yards have pretty big margin so keep pushing. Good luck with it all. Annette |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by Melissa on Feb 28th, 2007, 4:53pm I'm surprised you're going with Len Dudas. They are one of the higher priced used car dealers in the area. I do have to say though, that their vehicles are top notch, thoroughly inspected and well kept. My Grandpa & Grandma always got their cars through them and were always quite satisfied. I never like the asthetics of the Aztek myself, but Pontiacs are good cars. I have a Bonneville myself. ;;D Good luck Pegg! |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by fubar on Feb 28th, 2007, 5:01pm I don't think that's a good deal. Never, ever negotiate based on the monthly payment. ALWAYS negotiate on the price, THEN you get into the finance department and negotiate your loan. They will make you focus on the payment instead of the price, and in the process you'll end up paying too much for the car (way too much, especially if you pay a high price and get looong financing to bring the payment down) Your final cost will be much much higher. You can find a better deal than that. Really. |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by BobG on Feb 28th, 2007, 5:22pm I don't know who that Len Dudas dude is. Is it only used cars? Or is it also a new car dealership? New car dealers keep the best trade-ins for re-sale and will offer some kind of warrantee or guarantee. Used only dealers buy their cars at auctions. They are the cars that cost a real dealership too much to repair and/or prepare for sale. I would never buy anything from a used only lot. |

Then: 2 oil coolers replaced. Driver side power window went out. A bracket or bar in the dash came loose. Thought the airbag could go off at any time. Paint on the dash board started to chip and flake. (you should have seen the fix on that one. lol) The molding on the plastic fender flares was whipping in the wind and flew off on Hwy 101. Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by Redd on Feb 28th, 2007, 7:20pm Well as of yet. I've been dickering with them all afternoon. Yes if someone can run something on that vin I'd be greatly appreciative. What I didn't like was them telling me they secured my financing, then when I get there I have to jump through more and more hoops and providing more and more paperwork. If it wasn't that I needed a car like....today...which I didn't end up getting, I would have walked prior to all this. I understand what FU is saying, but my plan with this was only to have made a years worth of payments (or less) then refi it, or trade in but keeping the innitial payments affordable till I have the time to actually negotiate a great deal when I WANT to and not NEED to. When the car I DO have is questionable every day if I'm going to get to work or not, I'm not coming from a place of bargaining strength right now. |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by georgej on Feb 28th, 2007, 8:33pm Pegg, I didn't see what your original POS was. If it's a Ford, the fuel pump always goes out on them. I've never owned or seen a Ford that the fuel pump didn't go out on. The water pump always goes out on them too. In fact, when I owned a Ford, I never drove anywhere (when I was thinking straight) without a spare fuel pump and a spare water pump in the toolbox. The spares were like talismans--if I had a spare in the toolbox, the &^&%$# never blew up on me. If I didn't, the &^%*% blew every stinking time. The worst time I had a fuel pump go was in an old Bronco when I was on the Goose Creek Summit jeep trail coming down off of Big Creek on the western side of the Frank Church Wilderness. Dumb thing to do--anybody with any sense goes over Profile Summit and not Goose Creek, but....hey...Kowabunga. For those who know this "road" (and they are admittedly few) it's a fairly discernable scratchmark over the scree and talus that has fallen off a dozen mountainsides, and it's way the h&ll and gone away from anywhere at all. The memory of the three days before I got that heap of deadish metal out of there is best forgotten. Camping was fine, and I had plenty to eat, but I fumed around in pretty much an extreme state of anti-Ford p*ssoff the whole time. (Managed to get into some nice trout, though, while I was waiting for someone else to come along, so it wasn't all bad in hindsight, I guess.) Sorry this turned into a rant. I think "fuel pump" is a trigger for me. When I see "fuel pump", my brain says "Ford", and it all comes back.... :P Best, George |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by Charlie on Feb 28th, 2007, 10:26pm Guess I'm way out of date but there was a time when a fuel pump was a minor repair. Sold thousands of them over the years and sent the cores back. Most pumps were rebuilts. Good luck kid. Charlie |

Title: Re: One of those 0 star days...need advice fast Post by Gator on Mar 1st, 2007, 12:18am Charlie, nowadays a lot of cars have electric fuel pumps that just basically get thrown away when the go bad. And just to keep the average joe from replacing them by themselves, they are invariably mounted inside the fuel tank. Major PITA to replace even if you do know what you're doing. I do know what you're talking about, though. Hell, I even fixed one once that had a ruptured diaphragm with a piece of old inner tube. Worked long enough for me to get a new one. Can't do that crap now. With all the interrelated electronics in them, you have to have a special diagnostic reader to even know what's wrong half the time. |
