Title: Being on line when your not! Post by LadyElaine1 on Feb 23rd, 2007, 9:15pm Sometimes it shows here that people are on line when they really are not. If I forget to log out my name will still show up that I am on line. I am not real sure why but it does. If I am on line and my power goes out I can come back two or three hours later and it shows me still on line. Does this happen to just me or to everyone? I had someone email me and ask if I was ok because I was on line for so long a few weeks back. I been meaning to ask just haven't gotten around to it. |

Title: Re: Being on line when your not! Post by BlueMeanie on Feb 23rd, 2007, 9:34pm I'm not sure Elaine, but I believe you're right. I remember at the 1st DavCon someone asked why I was on-line for a week straight. I never logged out so I guess it showed I was still here. :-/ |

Also, last Sunday night I shut down ~ 10:00 pm and the next morning I noticed 2 pm's sent after 10:30 pm sunday night as being read. I never read the pm's Something screwy has been happening. -P. |

Title: Re: Being on line when your not! Post by fubar on Feb 24th, 2007, 6:11pm It's a combination of problems that causes this. It all depends on the web server software that is this site, how it's configured, what's in the path between you and the web server, and what's in the path between the web server and it's users. Without a full instant-messenger kind of program running, there's no great way to tell if a user is actually on-line or not, so the web server makes a best guess based on HTTP traffic it sees from you. Some of this traffic is 'memorized' by devices in between (caching proxies) and the web server can get confused. It's not that important for plain old web sites and it's an unsolvable problem with just HTTP. |

Title: Re: Being on line when your not! Post by E-Double on Feb 24th, 2007, 9:29pm I always remain logged on. I do this so that no one will ever feel alone like we have all felt in the past. If someone needs to talk they can always find a way to atleast get "it" off their chest. |

Title: Re: Being on line when your not! Post by georgej on Feb 24th, 2007, 10:09pm I almost never log off, although I don't always seem to show up. I know there have been times when people PM'd me, thinking I was logged on when I was not. Other times, when I've accessed the site from another computer, I didn't show up. It's one of those mysteries, I suppose. Best, George |
