Thanks everyone. This guy has been through a lot over the last 25 years and this is the last thing he needs. He's had two battles with cancer along with open heart and other heart procedures and has kicked ass. Right now the Docs want to focus on his spine due to an pretty good chance he could paralyzed.
Needless to say that my butt is outta here in the next couple of weeks, guess I better work on my southern accent! Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers and thank you for being such great people.

I just went through the toughest 15 minutes of my life. The family agreed that we needed to let my daughter know what my father is going through. She is 13 and is the apple of his eyes.
They are really close and he is pretty much the reason she's so good with technology and science where as I mostly taught her to fart on command and how to make a parachute for Barbi's.
I have held her when she is sick, when she is scared, when she was tired, and a million other times for a million different reasons. I just wish I could hold her now.
My ex wife had to take the phone from her, God, this stuff just breaks my heart.

Sorry to hear the additional news.
Only thing I've gotten out of it all so far with my Dad is that all the time is valuable. There's days when everyone feels pretty good and shitty days when the horizon looks kind of dark.

I'm in Charlotte, NC if "down south" brings you through here.

JEff - your daughter needs you now, just like your dad does. We had my dad live with us during the last three months of his life and I have a 15 year old son.

It will be hard for her but she'll take her cues from how you deal with your dad's illness. She's at an age where she's close to adulthood (the harder decisions and choices) but it's easier for her to be a kid and do what kids do which is melt down and tantrum - this is natural.

She'll be scared of being left in the dark so give her as much info as she can handle (you know her best). Answer any questions honestly - even if it's an "I don't know" answer.

In your grief and bewilderment, try not to shut her out. I'm sure it wouldn't be purposeful on your part, but sometimes grief and fear make us do things we wouldn't normally do.

God bless you and your family through this hard time. We're right here behind you should you need us.
