Title: Re: Jonny was right... Post by stevegeebe on Feb 20th, 2007, 4:51pm This is my take. Since the beginning of time for this Planet, it has been life itself that has produced the environment for propogation of the abundance and diversity we exist within today. Existing conditions allowed a cell to replacate itself and a particulal by-product of this magic produced an environment that laid the ground work for another thing to exist...so on and so. Life itself made the atmosphere. And now we look back. From that single microb we have evolved into "Monkey Deluxe". An animal that has become self-aware and actually has begun to realize that what he has become and done has in fact impacted the pool from which he sprang. And because of our inate terratorialism and disposition toward living for now, we expect to change, globally, the choices individuals make in regard to preserving our Planet and our ultimate existance. Never happen. We are but a resultant of what has happened to date. We have proven the interchangeability of mass and energy as achieves the speed of light but we will, as a species, never be able to change our collective ignorance. God will make it all beter. I think I'll go fix me a cheese burger. Steve G |

Title: Re: Jonny was right... Post by JeffB on Feb 20th, 2007, 6:02pm Well, it's not Californian cows thats causing this. Everyone knows our cows are too stuck up to fart. Gotta be the heffers from Wisconsin! ;;D But I do not see any reason to worry, there's an asteroid that will most likely kill every thing when it hits us in the next 30 years. It's closes pass will be around 10,000 miles from us. |

Title: Re: Jonny was right... Post by Redd715 on Feb 20th, 2007, 7:43pm I can't argue with that... Meg took pictures at the Battle of the Bands Friday night and not a one will transfer off the memory card. She got some great shots too... I'm about to give up on digital cameras...I haven't had one that lasted a year. |

Title: Re: Jonny was right... Post by FrankW on Feb 21st, 2007, 4:01pm Jonny is sort of half arse right - that is if you just consider the arse half. Cows do indeed emit a measurable amount of greenhouse gas - they also eat large amounts of grass which has to regrow and absorbs all that CO2 in the process of growing. I haven't done the precise sums - but a good bet is that it balances out, as is natures way. Perhaps any fossil fuel powered meat processing or tractors bugger up the equation a bit - but not so much. Sadly - cutting down a rain forest and converting it to biofuel is also good for the "greenhouse" part of the environment - if it is allowed to regrow. Mature forest absorb less and produce more greenhouse gas than growing ones - if the old one replaces fossil transport fuel the environment wins. Even Australias burning forests leave regrowth that reabsorbs all the CO2 produced while burning and a little more beside. Having said that - I am as appalled as anyone else by the greedy developers that are chopping down rain forests and animal habitats just to make a buck. Boring - but it is my subject - I am project engineer for the machinery and factory requirements for a development planting some a Billion or so oilseed hedgeplants in an otherwise waste dryland area of West Africa - for biodiesel production. One reason I don't get to check in here much - broadband communication is sort of expensive so I am usually just one of those eavesdroppers when hung up in an airport somewhere. Cheers Frank |
