Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by Mac_Muz on Feb 16th, 2007, 1:23pm HUH? here in New Hampster USA, it has been a warm winta'! Oh sure the last 2 weeks or so have been in single digits, but I rode my bike in December a lot, which isn't normal here. On Discovery they were telling about Global warming bring in an ice age! Bring it on! So far here in the white mountains we had 2 pipsqueek snow flurries and the valentines Day Blizzard amounted to less than 2 feet, which is meager for here. When I was a kid 5 feet of the white stuff was normal. I have a wood cut of the Hudson river frozen over from 1705, and the pic shows ice boats as frighters heading upto Albany. I can't say if carbon elements we release into the air are responcible for global warming or not, but if they are no one seems to have the answers. And if the answers are emmisions what about the rest of the world where there isn't any form of removing emmisions from factories. And I mean the rest of the world here. If the USA didn't produce 1/1,000,000,000,000 of a emission, and the rest of the world worked at a rate equal to now and in theory continuing to create more as is likely, what then? I find it odd global warming seems to mean colder.... |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by DonnaHar on Feb 16th, 2007, 1:40pm The US of A is lagging way behind in trying to eliminate emissions or anything else that brings on global warming compared to other countries. We are way behind others in the use of nuclear power which is the cleanest way to go right now. I am ashamed of our policies on contributing to the mess and blatenty saying as much when negotiating with other countries. |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by JeffB on Feb 16th, 2007, 2:11pm I think we'll be able to catch up on cleaning our air. At the rate we are closing auto plants and other manufacturing companies we are reducing Co2 and other bad stuff by laying people off so they don't have to use their cars as much. Of course when when you close just one plant imagine the companies that support it. Those companies also may close and send people home with pink slips thus reducing emissions even more. :-/ |

I'm all for saving the planet from things like Bhopal and strip-mining and clear-cutting and over-harvesting (fish or anything). Fine. But, the environmentalists are f-ing insane. They see a clear-and-present danger from anything we (humans) do. I'm quite sure they would protest hiking in the mountains because it upsets the animals who live there. Let's just ignore the inconvenient truth about global warming... it's happening, and it has nothing to do with humans. Show me some science that proves it is because of us. It does not exist. Al Gore can show all kinds of pretty graphs and pictures to show us what is happening, but it does nothing to prove WHY it is happening. On the other hand, there is a lot of science that he has ignored. Science that is hard to argue with... it shows that global warming is the result of solar cycles and has nothing at all to do with us. But nobody wants to hear that. http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/sun_output_030320.html And this is not new news http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/07/18/wsun18.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/07/18/ixnewstop.html This kind of news is unacceptable to environmentalists. Surely, it must be our fault... Global warming may be real, but the notion that it is caused by us is, well, just plain stupid. We aren't that significant. What is real is the battle of the world economies, and the global-warming-caused-by-humans-joke is a FANTASTIC way to level the playing field. The EU minister said exactly that... Quote:
http://www.cei.org/gencon/019,02964.cfm Why should we be interested in 'leveling' anything? Are we then going to have a treaty to level wages so WE can compete instead of sending all of our jobs offshore? Are we going to have a treaty to standardize all laws, civil and criminal? Why not? If they aren't the same universally, are we still on the same level? Why don't we just sign up for one true world order... that'll fix it. Hmmm. I wish more Americans would look at things with a critical eye instead of swallowing all the bullshit they are fed. That isn't a poke at you Donna... it's a poke at everybody who fails to think for themselves. If you take it personally, I apologize in advance. -Shawn |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by fubar on Feb 16th, 2007, 6:14pm Donna, I agree with you on building the nuke plants, and I agree that we will all be arguing as the planet does whatever it does. Thanks for taking my comments non-personally. :) Many countries use it safely. I think the comment on catalytic converters was to point out that we don't sit on our collective butts and do nothing about emmisions. We do a lot, including submitting to the environazi's that prevent us from building the plants (of any kind.) If people can remember the seventies, when everybody thought we were about to enter an ice age because of emmisions... we reacted with all kinds of legislation on emmisions, and now we have cars that cost (on average) about $2000 more because of it. Some of the things we are doing ARE helping clear the air and that's worth fighting for. The air quality in California has been going up for a long time now. However, I don't think any of this is connected to global warming (or cooling). This planet is HUGE. Mind bogglingly HUGE. Land only covers 33% of it, and humans occupy only 1% of THAT. We are not capable of changing the weather. Our footprint is miniscule. Things like volcanos put out more emmisions than we could ever dream about. |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by Mac_Muz on Feb 16th, 2007, 6:47pm Thanks for the answers. Nuke plants make some folks a tad nervous. Sea Brook In NH for example is on line and running with out problems so far as anyone can tell. It was plauged with problems in the building part; however and so no one really knows how long it will last. I myself got to see x rays of water cooling pipe with different serial numbers, which looks good, until one notices the x -rays are all the same pipe and the only diff is the serail numbers. I didn't make the discovery and saw it as NEWS, but it doesn't set to well to be with in 100 miles if it..... Workers had to wait for management and middle management, and I know a crew leader for parts of the carpentry that had the crew build saw horses to pretty much be working when there was no work. Well, the no work condition got to be boring so these guys added heads, and tails and had a race when management did finally show up... Not so great... Theory is fine, but has the question of waste been solved? I don't know.. I wonder about the ever bulging China, because it seems they will be like the Soviet Union with eco kill on hand that lasts, but then I hear Chernoble is safe these days... I am not so sure I buy that. Co2 is going to happen no matter what we burn, and even exhailing causes that for how many billion people now? I am only asking and not being a wise guy, really.... I do know volcanic activity can do a lot more than people can, but my take is people add to it, but more in industry than cars. Air borne flurides and other chems is more in line with my thinking, because there is no way to stop Co2, unless Co2 isn't carbon dioxide like I think. I don't trust industry to do much even when a law is passed due to a word called profit. I am not overly worried about either too hot, or too cold, much either. But I might like a cleaner world, and only wonder about that too. I rode a motorcycle across the country both ways and the road side litter is nasty. That tells me that common man can'tr contain his crap, and now we expect Industry too, and their past hasn't been too good either. As a child in NH USA I can recall rivers running red and orange from the paper mills down. Landlocked Salmon dead at spawning time lining the river banks untill the Govt did finally step in and force the paper mills to clean it up..... Clean it up they did, but not so deep into the muck, you can't find that crap. I don't know if the garbage we introduce to the oceans will get us before the global warming does, and I can't tell if it will matter... I find it all curious...... |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by DonnaHar on Feb 16th, 2007, 7:28pm I agree with Jonny too. Cows are the worst offenders and that's no bull. From what I hear from an educated source, Key West, Florida has the last living coral reef here on the Gulf Coast. Red tide, which causes breathing difficulties to so many, including me and I don't even have a lung disease, has been proven to be caused by the fertilizers and pesticides at home and on our golf courses. Our Manatees hit an all time high death rate this year and the dead fish were more abundant on our beaches this year than ever before. We have shellfish bans regularly. If you believe that it isn't MAN who is causing global warming, there isn't much question that he sure is having an adverse effect on our overall future. |

Sci-Tech Today Landmark Climate Report Released by World's Scientists By Seth Borenstein February 2, 2007 7:53AM Scientists from 113 countries issued a landmark report Friday saying they have little doubt global warming is caused by man, and predicting that hotter temperatures and rises in sea level will "continue for centuries" no matter how much humans control their pollution. A top U.S. government scientist, Susan Solomon, said "there can be no question that the increase in greenhouse gases are dominated by human activities." New York Times, Feb. 2, 2007 PARIS, Feb. 2 -- In a bleak and powerful assessment of the future of the planet, the leading international network of climate change scientists has concluded for the first time that global warming is "unequivocal" and that human activity is the main driver, "very likely" causing most of the rise in temperatures since 1950. |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by Charlie on Feb 16th, 2007, 8:49pm Common sense is what those who rail against speaking of global warming want us to ignore. All those sweethearts from energy and transportation companies tell us it's hunky dory. Gee whiz and here I was all set to worry. Whew, now like George Bush, I can pick and choose facts to fit my peculiar fantasies. Neocons put even speaking of global warming on the back enviornmentally-friendly burner. It's what they do now. Their initial response to it was to find some way to tone it down. They found a neocon truth-sayer to expunge the phrase "global warming" from speeches and replace it with "climate change." It worked for a time. I have wonder if the slowly changing attitude by the neocons isn't partially a response to the ever-increasing popularity of enviornmental and green issues among religious fundamentalists. Karl Rove never misses a trick. Nevertheless, it must be ok to pretend that the rest of the world is wrong. It worked until Novemeber anyway and you never know, it may again. Charlie |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by BB on Feb 16th, 2007, 10:56pm Collective data showed that the last Ice Age was approx 18000 years ago and the last major global warming was at period of the Jurassic, 106 to 244 million years ago. Since then there have been glacial and interglacial periods with natural fluctuations of global temperatures and CO2 levels but not as severe as we have seen it in the last century. Scientists have tried to replicate the current climate changes with natural forces alone, using super computers, but were unable to . The current climate changes can only be replicated with human contribution. We are currently in an interglacial period which is supposed to last an estimated 50000 years. However, with the current global warming effect it may come to an end as early as 100 years, if the predictions are correct. Therefore in my opinion, we as in mankind have done major damages to our own planet and its time for us to try to reverse them for our future generations, as much as we possibly can. Every little bit adds up. Annette |

Title: Re: Global warming my ass! Post by Mac_Muz on Feb 17th, 2007, 11:36am BB, This is where I get confused..... One day it is NYC will be flooded and drowned along with all other low land areas world wide, and then the next day is is Ice 1 mile thick.. Ice 1 mile thick ran over where I am twice, the last time it is said was apx 10,000 years ago. There were already people here who had crossed the gap in the bearing sea, which had been dry land. Paleo people adapted pretty well, and there are sites here where they camped and left stone tools. I also have a 1705 wood cut of the Hudson River at NYC, showing large frieghter type Ice Boats hauling frieght up the Hudson to Albany on a very frozen Hudson River. I am 55 now, and I don't believe the Hudson has ever frozen over like this in my life time ..so far. I consider this to be significant, due to the economics of the times in 1705. No one would have made any effort to build ice boats this size to haul anything if there wasn't profit in it. As of late everyone is talking about how cold it has been, but I surely don't understand that. I rode my motorcycle for the first time ever almost thru December in New Hampster! I have never been able to go past Dec 4th before. It has never hit -10'F which is more than common in winter here once. We tend to see -40'F for at least 2 weeks in January, and similar temps in early Febuary. So I see it as this winter is warmer, and more or less milder considering only 3 snows have occured here, the last on Valentines day with signicant snow. As a winter hiker I have pics of trips in the mid 80's here with no snow what so ever. These winters were too cold to snow, which might sound funny but when it is that cold the air stays very dry in a high pressue. It may be a climate change and it may be Global warming, but untill someone can really predict what we are looking for, what is the real cause, man or nature, and tell us something real to do about; it spending nickels and dimes on a panic solution isn't the best idea. And so far no one is. |
