Title: Peanut Butter Recall? Post by Sandy_C on Feb 15th, 2007, 10:08am Just want all to have a heads up on this - check your PB supply. I did and found I am the proud owner of two jars of Peter Pan with the 2111 product code. Our local news station is telling us to just throw them out, but if the manufacturer is "recalling" them, what do we do? Salmonella outbreak due to peanut butter By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer Wed Feb 14, 10:10 PM ET ATLANTA - A salmonella outbreak that has slowly grown to nearly 300 cases in 39 states since August has been linked to tainted peanut butter, federal health officials said Wednesday. It is believed to be the first salmonella outbreak associated with peanut butter in U.S. history, said officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 20 percent of the 288 infected people have been hospitalized, but none has died, said Dr. Mike Lynch, a CDC epidemiologist. About 85 percent of the infected people said they ate peanut butter, CDC officials said. How salmonella got into peanut butter is still under investigation, Lynch said. The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter because of the risk of contamination. The affected jars have a product code on the lid that begins with the number "2111." The affected jars are made by ConAgra in a single facility in Sylvester, Ga., the FDA said. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected, the agency said. ConAgra said it is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111. "Although none of our extensive product tests have indicated the presence of salmonella, we are taking this precautionary measure because consumer health and safety is out top priority," spokesman Chris Kircher said. "We are working closely with the FDA to better understand its concerns, and we will take whatever additional measures are needed to ensure the safety, quality and wholesomeness of our products." The largest number of salmonella cases were reported in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri. Salmonella infection is known each year to sicken about 40,000 people in the United States, according to the CDC. Salmonellosis, as the infection is known, kills about 600 people annually. Symptoms of salmonella can include diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting. The new outbreak began in August, but just two or fewer cases have been reported each day, CDC officials said. It was only in the past few days that investigators were able to hone in on a particular food, Lynch said. ConAgra is destroying all affected products the company still has, the FDA said. The company will cease production until the exact cause of contamination can be identified and eliminated. Meanwhile, ConAgra advised consumers to destroy any Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111. The FDA sent investigators to ConAgra's processing plant in Sylvester where the products were made to review records, collect product samples and conduct tests for salmonella. |

Title: Re: Peanut Butter Recall? Post by Gator on Feb 15th, 2007, 12:52pm We go through a lot of peanut butter here, too. I heard that so I checked the two jars (Peter Pan Crunchy) in the cabinet: 21116290001100B 21116319002039B One jar is empty and the other is about half eaten. Kids... Why is it such a problem to throw the empty away? I mean when you have to walk past the trashcan to get out of the kitchen...??? Anyways, these two jars must be (have been) okay, cause no one here has gotten sick from eating peanut butter. I agree with Helen. Peanut Butter has gotten friggin expensive. You should be able to take the lid with the recalled number to the store and get it replaced. |

Title: Re: Peanut Butter Recall? Post by Paul98 on Feb 15th, 2007, 12:58pm Helen's right! Screw tossing it. I'd give it to my dog and watch him lick his chops for the rest of eternity. LOL. I doubt he would get sick because this is the dog that thinks the cat litter box is a fast food joint. -P. |

Title: Re: Peanut Butter Recall? Post by Karla on Feb 15th, 2007, 2:25pm We bought 3 jars of the stuff. One jar is consumed and long gone. One is half gone and the other is full. I assume since no one is sick that mine was ok but I just made a sandwhich for my sons girlfriends daughter last night. Ill die if she gets sick. She is only 5. My dog has eaten some of this also. My son ate some yesterday also. UG. Why did it take 6 months for this info to come out!!?? This is outrageous. I am throwing the peanut butter out but keeping the lids to mail in and get a refund. I have tried accessing the companies webpage and it is down it appears. I cant get at it. I wanted to call them up and get an address to mail in my lids. |

Title: Re: Peanut Butter Recall? Post by Ob1kanobee on Feb 15th, 2007, 9:12pm The news is that the CDC "thinks" it could be the peanut butter and they are recalling it because 85% of the people said they ate peanut butter. The wierd thing is that the company that produces the peanut butter has tested it and has found no evidence of it making people sick nor has the CDC [smiley=huh.gif] I checked our pantry and found two cans of it, one of each from the two Namebrands mentioned on the news. One is pretty much empty and the other is halfway. No one is sick yet, but were not taking any chances. |

Title: Re: Peanut Butter Recall? Post by deltadarlin on Feb 16th, 2007, 7:36am http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070216/NEWS07/702160396/1001/BUSINESS05 It's called *CYA*. The Brookshire grocery store here will accept the jar back and give you a full refund or let you swap it for another brand. It's not that salmonella is in *all* those jars with that particular number, but those people who sickened from the peanut butter had jars with that code. As to why CDC had not informed the public before now, that's pretty obvious. They had to track these people down, interview them to find out what they had eaten, then put all the information together and find the common marker in the cases. Given that it wasn't a HUGE outbreak at one time, they didn't have enough information to go on. one who eats Jif |

Title: Re: Peanut Butter Recall? Post by LadyElaine1 on Feb 16th, 2007, 1:06pm We had the great value and when you call the number they tell ya to call, the recording says that no out break has been for great value brand they are just recalling it to be safe. It sounds like mostly the other brand is the problem. At least thats what I understood from the recording. |
