Title: I'm so hungry..... Post by DonnaHar on Feb 13th, 2007, 3:01pm I could literally eat anything in the food line not related to mushroom or milk (can't stand their taste). I was diagnosed as a new diabetic last November and told to drop some weight. I tipped the scale at a whopping 138 lbs. So.......out went the carbs, sugar and fats. I lost 10 lbs in 4 weeks, and my sugar level went back to normal....mostly from switching to ugh! diet-cola. That's not too hard. I'm on a 1400 calorie per day diet and still losing about an ounce a day......now down to 124 lbs. But....I also take Coumidin, which means not too many salads, greens or things like V-8. So what can I eat? Very small portions of sugar-free, low carb, little fat foods which include very small portions of some veggies and just some fruits. I'm walking around hungry most of the time. Oh, my kingdom for a big fat steak with lobster, steamed clams, baked potato with mounds of butter....or even a good sized plate of spaghetti. Any suggestions besides dandilions? |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by JeffB on Feb 13th, 2007, 3:08pm Welcome to the friggin club. I found out 2 1/2 years ago that I have type 2. Just be thankful you didn't have this crap 20 years ago. These days we have a lot of low carb options that weren't around then. I just wonder why the Doc said lose ten pounds at your weight, unless you're under 5 feet. Hang in there honey, it's not that bad! |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by echo on Feb 13th, 2007, 3:17pm To take the edge off you could try thet following. 16oz glass of ice water eat an oak leaf suck on a rock. Hope it helps. |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by DonnaHar on Feb 13th, 2007, 3:27pm Gawd! I just don't know what I'd do without you people. I love you all to death. I'll have to substitute the oak leaf for palmetto, the rock for a handful of sand but if I buy distilled water from the corner store, I can do the ice water without any trading. Keep the recipes coming. Maybe I'll write a self-help book. |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by JeffB on Feb 13th, 2007, 3:33pm Diet drinks still suck to me. I have southern roots so I love my ice tea and have gotten used to no sugar in it. Also, Sprite zero rocks, tastes great and there are some great recipes for Salmon and other fish. |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by Mattrf on Feb 13th, 2007, 4:43pm If you can eat fish, what about shark? If you have never had shark it has the texture of beef and the flavor depending on how you cook it can taste very similar as well. I hate fish but love a good shark stake, no fish taste at all. One more thing that you won’t believe but I will tell you we served it to our kids and they did not know it was not what it looked like, so we call them fakie taters, I found this when I was on a low carb diet, you steam cauliflower so it is good and mushy, then run it through a food processor and add butter and it taste like mashed potatoes, so try this with the shark stake and I bet you will like it. Just a thought for you. Matt |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by DonnaHar on Feb 13th, 2007, 5:14pm I have never tried shark, but I'm game to try it. I'll look for it. The cauliflower actually sounds good and I will give that a shot too. Thanks for the tips. |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by Mattrf on Feb 13th, 2007, 5:48pm You will like it, and be surprised on the taters, it really does taste like them. There are lots of shark out there I think the one I normally get is black tip, but not sure and they probably are all about the same, just cook it like you would a stake. Let me know how it goes. Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by clarence on Feb 13th, 2007, 5:58pm Lately, I really like: 1 Part Vanilla Yogurt, (I think I use fat free, no sugar added, so, it has sweetners, or whatever) 1 Part (or more) frozen mixed berries 1 Part granola a little flax seed mixed in. I make it in the morning, and take it to school with me. The berries melt, and it makes for a pretty tasty light lunch. Casey edit to add - huh, look at that...1000 posts. Finally. |

I take this crap too but I think I can drink V-8. I've heard of the salad thing though. The thing with this drug is that every time you bump your elbow or you shin, it goes major black and blue. Hang on kid and have a walnut on me. Charlie |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by JeffB on Feb 13th, 2007, 6:30pm Take away my cake. Take away my pepsi. But please don't take away my spicy V-8. I have 1 every morning. |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by Grandma_Sweet_Boy on Feb 13th, 2007, 6:56pm Donna - I found an excellent cookbook for my daughter to use. Her husband is an insulin dependent diabetic and in fact wears an insulin pump to better regulate his sugar levels. She tells me there are some really good recipes in it that the whole family enjoys. All recipes are aimed at diabetics. If you can't find one where you are, please PM me your address and I'll send you one. Carol |

Title: Re: I'm so hungry..... Post by DonnaHar on Feb 13th, 2007, 7:00pm I have the same problem, Charlie. Especially after playing with my dog. My hands and wrists look like I got roped and tied. Walnuts are good, so yes, I'll have one or two of those. I've looked for recipes on the internet and have tried a few but they try to make them so exotic that you have to have every spice and herb on the planet in your pantry. V-8 is the one thing I am not doing without. I have just one 6 oz. can every day and savor every drop. And it has to be the hot and spicy, too! |
