Daylight Saving Time will take effect two weeks earlier this year, beginning at 2 a.m. on March 11 and ending Nov. 4. The date change was signed into law by President George W. Bush in order to help the country conserve energy.

Love golf, I suck at it but still love it.
Hay if any of you golfers wind up in Nor Cal and want to play at Stanford just let me know, it's a bit expensive though, as an employee I have to pay $50 a guest has to pay $100 now that is insane!

Ya, f'ing BRILLIANT.

So, for a few weeks, we might save some watts lighting up the place BUT

This brilliant move is going to make Y2K look like a joke... so many systems around the planet have to 'agree' on the current time (often with huge legal implications, not to mention safety) that this little wrinkle is already causing the hasty re-coding of *millions* of lines of code.  All of this is going to have far less planning and testing than Y2K, yet it is easily 10 times as complicated.

If you ever have dealth with transactional systems, you know what I'm talking about.

It's going to be interesting to watch, that's for sure.  Think about programmed trading getting conflicting data (market instability) or scheduled power-grid switching (think those SCADA systems get updates?  think again).  A lot of the problems they expected in Y2K are going to pop their ugly heads up this year.  I'm not saying the sky is going to fall, just that it will be interesting to see how many systems falter or fail because of this energy-saving measure.

LOL.

This is how his friends to him to deal with energy conservation. No need to rock the boat.

Kill me now.

Personally I think that DST should stay  permanently, or even better reversed. I hate the sun, so a longer time of it in the hot summer is usless. Better to have it help me wake up, then to wake up in the dark. In winter having the sun out later in the day would give maybe an hour of daylight when you get home, or atleast the drive home in the light.

I hope your wrong Fu, bu we will see. In the Y2K gear up most power companies didn't deal with precise timings,  But as we saw a few years ago how a small power glitch could take down a now over taxed grid.

Wall street is another story becouse I believe they run on the one brand of OS that doesn't run on GMT, and that won't be getting any updates for the new DST start date.

The Internet running on mostly UNIX/BSD and Google running on Linux will be fine. I guess we will see how the non *nix OS's fair.

LMAO Matt.  If any of you golfers wind up in "real" Nor Cal..which in our minds is anything north of Sacramento, you can play golf at one of our courses for 11.00

You're in Central Ca. to us Matt.  ;)

Wake up to the 'daylight-saving' bug

The move could impact time-sensitive applications other than calendaring, such as those that process sales orders or keep track of time cards. Gartner, for example, says the bug could lead to incorrect arrival and departure times in the travel industry and result in errors in bank transactions, causing late payments. In
addition, trading applications might execute purchases and sales at the wrong time, and cell phone-billing software could charge peak rates at off-peak hours.
