OK so I am pretty sure a guy can’t get breast cancer but about a week ago I noticed a sore spot right under my left nipple, when I pressed on it I found a small lump and it was very tender. The lump seem to have gotten just a little bigger in the past week and there may even be some swelling of the left side of my chest and it is still painful, I know I need to go see a doctor to have it checked out but was wondering if anyone has experienced something like this or heard of anything that would cause a lump in a man’s chest like this?

I am wondering how worried I should be at this point so anything that could help would be appreciated and some positive vibes couldn’t hurt.

Although it's rare, There have been cases of men getting breast cancer. If there is a lump, I'd get it checked out. Most likely a benine (sp) cyst, but if it hurts, I'd play it safe and go see the Doc.

Matt, acutally men do get breast cancer, it's just not talked about much. You probably have something quiet benign, but best to get checked out pronto. Phil

I am planning on calling on Monday to get an appointment with my GP but have to keep it on the QT, my wife is suffering from extreme depression right now and I really don’t want her to have just another thing to stress over, so I think I will just do it and when I find out what it is then tell her.
With out luck it will be cancer, our luck when it comes to medical things the last four years has just been horrible.

Worrying about what might happen and it doesn't means you've worried in vain. Worry about it and it does happen then you've worried twice.

Seems like a whole lot of wasted energy right?

I've had the same thing... doctor said something like swollen glands... it's not 'normal', but it's no big deal (usually)

That’s what I figure it is and was hopping it would be gone in a week, but it’s still here so off to the doctor to make sure it’s nothing to worry about.

If I recall correctly, I had it for about 3 weeks. It hurt a lot for about a week.

Are you taking any medications ? I know of certain medications that will cause swelling of the breast tissue on a man. Either way you should have this checked immediately. Good luck.

You must go get this checked by the Doc, I had the same thing last year and ended up going for Breast X rays and scans. Mine was small cysts which were dealt with easily. The Doc that dealt with me told me that some of the pills I have taken over the years may have contributed to these.. Breast Cancer is rare in men but not unknown

The fact that it hurts is a good sign. Also, the size increasing so much in one week is another good sign. I'd bet money that it is either a hormone upset or a cyst.

Cancer of the breast in men is not uncommon today. Actually, the incedence is quite high. Men just don't go to the doctor as often as they should. That's why women live longer. Women get problems corrected more often than men do. That's a sad fact as many men could be around a lot longer if they would just go to the doctor for routine check-ups or as soon as they suspect a problem.

Praying that yours is a quick fix......keep us posted.

Talking from experience men can and do get breast cancer although more men die from testicular cancer than women do breast cancer which quite surprised me...however Matt to ignore this lump and swelling would be stupid so im glad you booked in to the docs....wishing you luck....I actually wish my tit would hurt but as I now have none I don't suppose it will lol....looking on the bright side....girls if you are lucky enough to come across any swelling on or near your breasts then you know what we say in england ....don't look a gift horse in the mouth!!! ;;D ;)

Just got back from the doctors, he said that he thinks it is probably just a cyst but we should have an ultrasound to make sure. I call and they say I need a mammogram not an ultrasound, ok fine, but then she tells me they are booked out through April, I can understand putting it off that long for a woman that is just doing her annual like my wife does each year but I have a lump that hurts so we are not looking for one but are trying to make sure it’s not cancer.
They are going to try and get me in sooner and are supposed to call me back, so guess we will see, can’t believe they would make someone wait that long for something that the doctor wants you to have, that’s just nuts!

Call your doc back and tell them what's going on. That's bullshit about being booked up uthru April.

Otherwise, just have someone get two 5 X 5 pieces of wood, put your tit between the two pieces of wood and have them squeeze as hard as they can. That way you'll be primed for when you have the real ultrasound.

Call your local Chap. of the American Cancer Society. The number of MEN with breast cancer will astound you!
That is NOT to scare you.really, it is just to educate you.
That being said, anytime you are dealing with POTENTIAL cancer, early detection and rapid treatment are VITAL.
When you speak to the ACS, asl if there is a breast cancer screening going on nearby.
That being said, I hope it's nothing like what your FRIENDS have suggested her.WROKKKK!!!!!!! :P

Actually I would think that would make you feel better sweetie. It is probabally nothing and you need to listen to Fubar on this. (swollen glands) If you had something serious I doubt they would makle you wait til April.

Matt,

If your doc has seen you, then he is the one to ask if it's OK to wait until April. What I would do is call your doc's office, tell them what the situation is, and see if THEY think it's OK to wait. If they say that's fine, don't worry about it. If he really suspected it was cancer, he would make certain you had the scan sooner. They don't have direct control of the scheduling, but if they know what kind of wait you had, they have the ability to push the other facility to do it sooner.

Who is 'they'.....If the doctor wanted an ultrasound and 'they' said mammogram I would call the doctor back. If he thinks mammogram is OK then ask how quickly they want it done. If they (doctor's office) think April is OK then no worry...if they want it sooner the doctor's office should be able to get an appointment set before April...

Just my take....but what the hell do I know... ;;D

Got the call back and they are getting me in on Thursday at 11:00 so all is good.
I am sure it is nothing but like so many have said, better safe than sorry and would rather know sooner than later.

Amazing enough this has not stressed me out, not sure why but glad. I just snapped myself out of a very deep depression over the last couple of weeks and you would think something like this would make me do a spiral but no, I feel fine at least so far. Who knows, but not complaining that’s for sure?
I really do appreciate all the support from you guys though, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have been told that men should do self-exams on their breasts. It may be rare, but I was told that once.

Now, going tot he doctor right away is the right thing to do. No matter what it is, it is best to get tings like that checked early.

Now relax and Ill say a prayer for you (it never hurts even when it is most likely nothing).

Just over an hour till I get my boob squished, have to admit I am a little apprehensive right now, then I will have to wait for the results so more apprehension.
It had better be nothing, my wife is finally coming out of her depression and this would send her off the deep end to say nothing of what it would do to me.

It is all good!
I just got back from having the mamogram and they said it is just a cyst and nothing to worry about, thank god!

Told my wife, she was a bit miffed at me for not telling her a week and a half ago when I first found the lump but she will get over it, I just did not want to give her something to stress over when she finally seems to be turning the corner and getting out of the deep depresion she has been suffering.

Thanks everyone for being here for me it made a huge difference.

Man... I read this whole thread tonight and I am so relieved... I don't blame your wife for being miffed... next time tell her. Even when I am in the heat of a deep depression sometimes being needed by someone actually stops me from thinking about whats ailing me and snaps me out of it... kiss her for me she sounds like a sweetie... and Matt, A heating pad or hot compresses... did they say it would go away or are they going to take it out... love ya Ree-(Lieved)
