Post by Margi on Feb 2nd, 2007, 10:47am :) I wondered why I was getting all this email....I really hadn't wanted to put this out there in public but Bob, thank you for doing this. I shoulda known better. You're a star, my friend and you knows I loves ya. Savannah did very well, we're through the surgery and she may even get released from ICU by noon today - she's a tough little kid. Just before Christmas, Savannah was diagnosed with mesenchymal hamartoma. This is a benign growth. Her belly has always been large but her Mummy just knew something wasn't right. At this time, we were told that the growth was the size of a Florida orange. Surgery was booked for Jan. 29 so we started our waiting period. We had a very quiet Christmas and got the prayers going. Surgery day finally came only to be cancelled on Monday because they couldn't find a cross-match for her blood. Rescheduled to yesterday. Surgery commenced at 8 a.m. and went 8 hours. They removed 70% of her liver and her gallbladder. They removed a CANTELOUPE sized growth that was growing inside her liver and they expect a full recovery. She went down two diaper sizes with this surgery and, for the first time, we now have a little skinny minny grandbaby :) We're all so used to her little pumpkin belly and now she's just so tiny! She's in a lot of pain right now, understandably and her mummy and daddy are doing their best to soothe her. Of course they can't pick her up because of all the tubes so it's a very difficult time for us all right now. But...the bottom line is - she's going to be just fine. She's even going to get written up in the medical books actually - this is a very rare thing and her doctor is very proud of how well she's doing. Thank you all so much for your prayers and concerns. Liver functions are EXCELLENT, blood levels returning to better than before surgery - eating and pooping like a trooper. Mummy took her in her stroller around the hospital this morning and all she could say was "Home? Mummy? Home?" Doctor says she's had a MIRACULOUS recovery (I wonder why :)) and she's doing amazingly well. Time for home healing to start. She's not yet able to walk because she's leaning backwards too much. She is so used to carrying that big belly around that she's teetering over backwards now that she's skinny. LOL Honestly, if that's the only complication we have to worry about? Yeah, we'll take it with a smile. She'll figure it out and be running in no time. She's never been able to run before, just walk really fast like a little penguin. Look out world, now though! Here's comes Banana!! YAY!!! Again, thank you everyone for your love and prayers. I'm not surprised at all with the miracle we've received and you've all been part of it! Happy 'Amma :) |

I took the "before" picture on the Tuesday before surgery and we'll take an "after" picture next week when she's mobile again. The nurses hung the before pic up on their bulletin board actually - they were amazed by it. She honestly looked 9 months pregnant that night. The doctor told Corinne (my daughter) that Savannah is one of only 140 known cases in the world of this. We always knew she was unique but.... ;) |
