Has anyone had one, if so why? Seems my Dad had an appointment with his Doc for pain he has been experienceing since last summer. The Doc called his Urologist to get more info on his bout with bladder cancer a few years ago and set him up with an MRI which was done on Sunday. they had him in there for 2 hours and now they want to do a bone scan.

Any info on this procedure would be great!

Dunno if it is related, but there are some types of cancers that are linked with weak bones - something about vitamin D and calcium balance. Maybe they suspected osteoporosis after the CAT scan. Haven't had the scan myself, so I can't say much about it. Hope it turns out well for him.

Jeff,

In a bone scan, they inject a tracer which flows thru the body and into the bone. Areas that are dark or "cold", indicate that area is not receiving the proper supply of blood.

These areas could (only a possibility, ok?) indicate cancer.

I had a friend years ago who died with bone cancer....however, she refused the testing and treatment.

Since your Dad is a cancer survivor, he probably should have this test done. The bone scan shows problem areas long before a regular xray will.

I'm not much help....sorry, but this is about the extent of my knowledge about this.

Sheesh thanks Flo, I'm sitting here scarfing down the calcium equivalent of the white cliffs of Dover daily and more vit D than produced by a year of sun - yikes!

I had a bone scan but it was ages ago Jeff - 2000 in fact.
All I remember was having to have a radio active injection and wait (think it might have been a couple of hours but its a long time ago) then a scan through a donut like machine. It was no biggie if that's what your dad has to have.

The worst bit was being given an injection from a nurse hiding behind a lead shield - I felt like a leper or something

I sent Jeff a pm to add this, because it wasn't my intention to make the reasons for this test seem completely and totally negative.

They can detect new bone growth...and also breakdown of bones. I assume Osteoporosis can also be detected.

"Bone Infarction"...is the term for bone with no blood supply.

OK...I'm done, now... ;;D
