Title: I need to Brag a bit... Post by aprilbee on Jan 29th, 2007, 9:43am This weekend we received a packet in the mail to enroll my daughter, Dallis, in the gifted program at her school! we are so very very proud! for years, her teachers have been telling us to put her on Ridlin and that she has A.D.D. I KNEW she was just bored...finally one of her teachers saw what I was seeing and telling her school and had her tested....Dallis is so talented in her art and drawing...she's absolutely amazing! I'm such a proud mama right now, we knew she had something going on in that little head of hers! at 13 years old she is the youngest in her 8th grade class... Anywho...I just had to share with my family! April Bee! Proud mom of Dallis Bee! :D |

Title: Re: I need to Brag a bit... Post by jimmers on Jan 29th, 2007, 9:54am Way cool April! Unfortunately nowadays doctors and such are real quick to prescribe ritalin and blame everything on A.D.D. Same thing happened to my friends regarding their 8 yr. old Son. Turns out the kid was in the same situation that your daughter was, bored but very gifted. Now he helps tutor other kids in a vast array of subjects. Jimmers |

Title: Re: I need to Brag a bit... Post by nani on Jan 29th, 2007, 11:37am That's terrific, April! It's good to catch these things asap, before they lose interest in school completely. I know a bunch of gifted drop-outs. :-/ My grandson is gifted and has ADD. They call that twice exceptional, but I call it a PITA, LOL. |

Title: Re: I need to Brag a bit... Post by BarbaraD on Jan 29th, 2007, 4:28pm Way to go ... I think Ritilin is way overused. But it's an easy out... My grandson is "hyper" totally, but sharp as a tack. Show him something or tell him something and he's like an elephant - he just doesn't forget it. Take him somewhere one time and he can give you directions how to get back (and Granny needs that a LOT!). Guess I can get on my soapbox about "grouping" kids into the A D D stuff. They just need attention and someone to figure out what they need. Glad your Dallis found her niche... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: I need to Brag a bit... Post by Charlie on Jan 30th, 2007, 5:23pm Nice going April and Dallas! My little neice has been called A. D. D. but mom knows better and pretty much told them to shut up. Cindy is involved in day care and other kids stuff. She's almost as bright as her daughter. It's fashionable to group kids like this. If they don't behave like robots, they are sick and need a handful of pills just like the rest of us. Bleaugh. Thank God you did the right thing. Charlie |

Title: Re: I need to Brag a bit... Post by Gator on Jan 31st, 2007, 12:36am Yeah!!! Way to go Dallis! Definitely something to be proud of, April. I know there really is a disorder that causes an attention deficit, but in a lot of cases, ADD = Acute Discipline Deficit. Parents abdicate their responsibilities to the schools and it seems the schools would rather drug them than deal with them. |

Title: Re: I need to Brag a bit... Post by Pfunk on Jan 31st, 2007, 1:54am Congrats to Dallis! That is wonderful! Seeing that much of my studies in school have been devoted to Special Ed., some of this is of particular interest to me. And, I too believe that ADD is often used as an 'out' if they have no other explanation. And yes, ritalin is over-prescribed. However, often times it is not the schools that want the ritalin. It is the doctor who has no idea what else to do or the parents who are looking for any explanation or help. I think that if they dug a little deeper, they might be able to get to the root of the problem and realize just what they found with Dallis. The child is simply studying things that are below their particular ccapabilities and are bored with the material and/or not being challenged. You go Dallis! This rally is something you should be very proud of MOM. |

Title: Re: I need to Brag a bit... Post by LadyElaine1 on Jan 31st, 2007, 10:09am Glad you fought them on giving her that drug. Board is usually the cause, to bad they don't see it as that. Great there was a teacher who took the time and saw what you did. I know you are proud. Like Jackie said get her to post some of her work. We would love to see it. |
