Title: Wish me luck
Post by artonio7 on Jan 29th, 2007, 4:56am
Today at 11:00 am EST I have my first appointment with a neurologist.
I've spent hours printing articles and posts from this site and recommended sites. I wonder if he'll even read them? My main objective is to get started on Oxygen and hopefully he'll agree. My GP wouldn't budge and got livid when I brought him reading material, but he did agree to refer me to a neurologist.

Anything I should tell him that you can think of? Please say a prayer that he's qualified. I hate the whole ordeal of having to even leave my home (agoraphobic here) let alone deal with a doctor.

with warm regards,
Tony

Wish you the best Tony. I went to my nero with papers in hand and told him that in no way was I a doctor but would like to try some meds recomended by some of you.

He smiled and asked which ones and I told him I would need the Predosone as a abortive and the Verapamil without Lithium as a preventive. I was on Pedisone and Lithium before but I was having a little problem with the combo.

He said if I really wanted o2 he would prescribe it to me but wanted to try the new meds first. THEY WORKED! I am PF this cycle with a few good shadows but otherwise good.

Sorry for the novel but hope everything goes well for you. Let us know.

 Barry

Best of luck, Tony.

I would simply ask your new neuro if he can refer you to a decent GP.

Bill

Good luck Tony.  I hope you have a stroke of luck in finding someone to help you.

If he doesn't seem to be up to speed, poll the members here for who they see in your area and maybe someone better will come along.

PF Days to you my friend.

I agree with Brew ...........
find a new GP

My pet peeve is a Dr who gets pissed when you know more about your condition than they do.  If they arent DOCTOR enough to admit that fact, and help you .. then I get rid of them  --- QUICK!   In my opinion, if you cannot work with your doctor - WHY BOTHER?

Any Dr who "knows" about clusters shouldn't be upset when you ask for O2......... it's frikkin ridiculous!   It's not like you're asking him for an IV drip of heavy narcotics for cryin out loud!

sorry --- off my horse now.. LOL!

Good luck!!!!!!!!!

The doctor got super peeved when you asked him to read about your condition?  I didnt read anything in the news about a doctor that got his ass whooped for being an idiot.  What did you do?

Good luck, hope you can get your O2

I apologized for bruising his ego. Then I shared something with him that I thought he could relate to... I farted and asked him if he thought I had gas.

Again thank you all.

man that sucks. as you've probably see nfrom past threads that touch on this subject -- this kind of doctor behavior pisses me off beyond about anything else we get to hear about here.

okay, in cluster-fantasy-land, we'd be able to pick up the phone and call a 1-800 number to our guardian angels (I'd call them the "clusterfuckers") to come over and have a little "talk" with any doctor who is such an ass.

Okay. whew..... I'm back. Thanks for the support everybody.

So, can you feel my smile? It should feel like a warm summer's breeze. It should smell like the salty air of the ocean laced with the sweet fragrance of Wisteria. It should sound like a babies first cry.

What a Gem this Neurologist turned out to be. Extremely personable, he took the time to examine and actually listen to me... I mean really listen and he didn't take the stack of reading material I handed him and start bitch slapping me with them.

He knows what cluster headaches are... so long story short.. Verapamil 120-mg once a day to begin with... We'll see how it works and Imitrex injection samples. SAMPLES... I'm hesitant to ever use them but wtf they were free   ;;D

Down side... still no O2. My insurance won't even consider covering it.
I'm considering going to a welding supply house with my luck I'll get pure nitrous oxide and giggle through a 10 hit... that should be an interesting adventure.

Thanks for your support again,

with warm regards,
Tony

Good news, Tony.....a doctor that listens is always a positive!!!

I just happen to know someone who can probably coach you on the welder's 02.... ;;D  should you decide to go that way.  02 is always worth a try.....well, in my estimation anyway.... :P

LMAO   [smiley=laugh.gif]....and spit coffee on the keyboard.       :P    Too funny!   [smiley=laugh.gif]

Damn, you got a great sense of humor.   ;;D

Seriously though...I'm interested as to why your insurance won't pay for 02.   If your doc prescribes it...they should fill the script.

Blows my mind that insurance co's pay out thousands on Triptans (w/limitations), but won't cover one of the cheaper modes of treatment.

Glad you found a good doc. Good luck with the welders 02. It sucks you've gotta go that route, but it's actually the same stuff anyways. Just curious why your hesitant to take the FREE Imitrex unless you have a heart condition. For most of us that use it, it works like a charm.

Take care

Tony,
So glad you found a qualified Dr.  My gp wouldn't even give me and Rx for trex & the headache dr gave me lots of free samples ;;D.

Don't give up on the 02.  Call the insurance adn then keep calling.  You never know.  I'm still dealing with the same thing.

You do have a way with words and a great sense of humor, keep us posted.

PF wishes,
Beth

They may have to RE consider that if they get a doctors letter of neccesity.

Great that you had good luck today. Some neurologists are odd but most, OK. I had one that said: "Cluster headaches can be very painful."  :o

Damned if I know Jean. I'm sure that if they did though the docs would love it. Don't they get x amount of bucks for every script they write?

I'm on SSI Disability. Maybe they figure they waste enough money on this useless carcass.

I have high BP and during my stress test a few weeks back as I was running along on the tread mill, lungs about to collapse, my heart rate never got above a 90. I'm no athlete. Most exercise I get is doing curls, coffee cup in one hand cigarette in the other. I'm no fool I took the samples. Someone can use them.

I find it rather curious that some doctors will prescribe just about any med, but are reluctant to prescribe oxygen.

And I would definitely find a new GP if my doc acted like that. Luckily, my GP actually listens to me and anytime I have printed something out and taken to him he never got offended.

If you got the sample with the auot-injector pen, check out the 'Imitrex Tip' in the list to the left on here for a heads up on how to extend one shot into 2 or 3.

Peace,
Carl

Tony,

That is great news that you found a great Dr...As far as the insurance not covering the o2..here is what you can do...

Have the Dr send in a pre-determination letter to the care cordination team to your insurance...As to why you need it ..

It is not a guarantee they will still cover it but it is worth a shot and basically 7 out of 10 claims that way get authorized if it is actually medically needed...

Just a lil help from someone that deals with medical insurance all day long...

Good luck

Tammy
