Title: I can tell now !
Post by LadyElaine1 on Jan 27th, 2007, 8:36pm
I gave up smoking.
My daughter was the first to give it up.
We both quiet on the first, I cheated and really only quiet on the 8th. Be three weeks Monday. I have not told anyone, not even my best friend Jackie, because I wasn't sure I could do it.

Ya'll pray I never pick up another one!  I have to quit !  I was finding it hard to breath. I am breathing so much better now.

Wait until your sense of smell and taste resume!!  That will be a true reward.  I am proud of you Elaine.  Keep up the hard work.  It is a day to day struggle.  Once you make it past 3 months it should all be uphill.  They say 3 months is how long it takes to establish a new habit.

I was a 30 year smoker and quit cold turkey, and am 17 months smoke free. This is totally "my thing"

You hang in there. you can do this!

PS My breathing is much better, talk to me any-time. I am there! :)

Karla My since of smell did come back. I been a cleaning nut the last two weeks, I have scrubed walls and sofa and chairs and cleaned curtains, and washed cloths and pocket books, had my truck detailed. You name it it has been done.
Buddy still smokes, I don't fuss with him. He will have to want to stop on his own. I know that from being a smoker.
I stopped doing things that made me want to smoke. The hardest thing is sitting at this computer makes me want one bad.
I am so happy I stopped and feel so much better!
Any of you people who smoked and stoped have any good advice. Throw it my way Please !
You know I just paid $55 for a lighter on the OUCH auction. I got that for a special reason. Jean gave me years ago I lost it  when I stopped smoking. I lost it right here at my desk. Its here but I can't find it. I had a feeling Jean donated those lighters for OUCH to auction so I bid high on it so I would win it . Stop smoking hasn't bothered me as much as losing that lighter has.

Way to go Elaine!

It's damned hard but it's so much less complicated not smoking. I was 34 when I quit and it probably saved my life.

Drink a lot of soft drinks but stay away from alcohol for weeks, even months. I had to because the sheetheads at the bar always stuck cigarettes in my face offering them about every two minutes.

Anyway, one of these days, you'll realize that you forgot to think about having one now and then and Bam! You won.

I bet your nose is in high gear. It gets worse E. You're gonna be a PITA about smoking too.  :o

Congrats, kid.  That's a really big accomplishment.  Quitting is one of the hardest things I've ever done.  And I probably "quit" about 5 times, only to restart ..until the last time, which is about 3 years now.

I noticed that my heart went into fibrillation more often when I lit up. Scared me so bad the last time that I'm afraid now.  I'll never smoke again.

You should be proud of yourself!  I know I'm proud of you.

Very awesome!!!
I have been trying to quit since 2002, and with my lung capacity shot and being diagnosed with Emphysema last year, I'm a thinking it is time.

Once again you inspire me. Keep smoke-free!!!

Peace,
Carl D

WOW, Elaine.....I'm sooooo proud of you.  You sure can keep a secret....I had no idea.  I did know about the lighter....felt bad for you because it upset you.

I quit for 3 months...never should have started again.  Now, you be the smart one and leave those things alone forever.

Mast...it's been almost 3 years....time sure flies.  I'm proud of you too.

Blake has quit too....it's been almost 3 months for him.

Love to you my friend,
Jackie

Way to go Elaine!  Come Feb. 28 of this year, I will be smoke free for two years (after smoking for 33 years).  My trial by fire after I quit was the Dallas convention.  I had been quit for 4.5 months and then attend a convention where a LARGE percentage of people were smoking (and I didn't start back or kill anyone).  Drink lots of water to help fight those cravings (also helps with the weight gain).  I gained just a little bit (not too much) and now I've got to lose it.

Again, congratulations.  You're actually through the physical part of withdrawels (the chemicals are actually gone from your body in about 2-3 days).

Yeah Elaine!
I am so proud of you!  I was going to quit on my 50th birthday but didn't.  Have the patches at the ready.  Trying to pick another quit date-have started rolling my own (cheaper and I smoke less cause its too much work ::))
Anyway, every single day your body is repairing the damage done by cigs.  Hang in there, I'm right behind you...
PFDAN y'all,
kathy

Congrats!!!!  I'm really trying to work up my will to quit for good.  The smell is starting to bother me more and more everyday and I have smoked for 20+ years.  Reading everyones story how they quit after years of smoking gives me inspiration.
Again, Congratulations!!
Beth

That's awesome Elaine!

I quit every year and manage to let the beast break my will.  However, we smokers know that any excuse will do.  I'll keep tryin or die from some smokng related disease.  Just a matter of time.  My breathing now is at a totally unacceptable level for truly enjoying life.

You are a further inspiration.

...Love Ya.....Tim

Tim, my daughter and I just said no more. I think what helped me most was my grandson. I would like to be around to see him grow up. Plus the fact breathing was hard for me.
I thought of using aids but they cost more than a carton LOL
Just a lot of will power and also I keep busy. I find when I stop and rest is when I want one more.
Find something to keep your hands busy. I am doing needle point. Instead of smoking when sitting I keep my hands busy.
The hard thing to break is reaching for them. My brain has reached for a soke evry 10 minutes for so long. It doesn't know how to break that pattern.
I cut straws and put them in my case and when I reach I come up with a straw to chew on! This week I am filling my case with life savers.
Good luck Tim and Linda. ! If I can do it you two can. I been smoking since I was 16 I am 52 now.

Wishing you lots of good luck with this one, Elaine.

Sadly I still smoke although not ever in my house which does help to keep the amount down.

I think you have to want to quit for it to work and it sounds like you're motivated.

We smokers are a dying breed (no pun intended) and I'm afraid, I'll be the last one standing!! ;)

Well Done Elaine.

Thats brilliant.   I am having another go at the end of this month, when we return from holiday.  There is a new drug out over here called Champix, so I am going to creep round the doc.  I have tried about five times over the years and always give in.  Have really had enough of it and want to be clear before the smoking ban comes into effect in UK in July.

Keep it up.

Congratulations Elaine...I am so damn proud of you, gal!  I have tried three times in the last year...but, I am going to do it soon, I promise.  My son stopped smoking but is dipping now...I think that is even more dangerous.  Hard to believe I am still smoking and work in the Cancer unit at the hospital....in fact alot of the nurses there smoke,  sad indeed.smiles, nancyc

Congrats, Elaine!!!  It's tough for sure, but your body will thank you.  I went cold turkey a few years ago.  From 2+ packs per day to nadda.  It feels good getting the monkey off your back, doesn't it?  Now if we could only ditch the gorilla we all share life would be nearly perfect.

Oh That would be Heaven wouldn't it Gator !
How long before you lose the cough ?
We are all giving up something around here.
Deveny bless her heart stopped smoking and is losing weight
at the same time. I don't know how she is doing that.
I find I eat more now. Buddy he is losing weight also.
Buddy said he doesn't have as much will power as Deveny.
He can't lose weight and stop smoking at the same time.
He said when he loses his weight then he will give up smoking.

Thanks for the heads up and support on this. It helps knowing I have friends behind me!
