The English-only crowd should be required to learn and use proper English.  That would set their cause back at least a generation.

People who are fully bilingual and speak both languages every day for most of their lives can delay the onset of dementia by up to four years compared with those who only know one language, Canadian scientists said Friday.

Researchers said the extra effort involved in using more than one language appeared to boost blood supply to the brain and ensure nerve connections remained healthy — two factors thought to help fight off dementia.

I'm glad English is winning the international language contest (it makes it quite convenient for US), but I'm also disappointed that most of us can only speak one language....

We're missing out.

Working for an airline that services San Juan, Caracas, and Cancun, as well as Santa Domingo and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, soon also Port au Prince, Haiti, who I'm guessing may also be Spanish derived, we have a separate phone number for Spanish, none of the four options to press signify an alternative language but there could be a message while on hold during the annoying music directing requests for Spanish.

I get frustrated having a hard time with one.    ;)

A girl close by me from Columbia handles the clientele and I love the friendly sound and had thought to learn a word-a-day from her but am reminded many times daily of my agonizing lifelong struggle with English.   Despite some interest it seems overly challenging at my age and seldom would be practiced.  I missed out.

Actually, B14, you might not be with the Duke on this one.

While the Duke was well known as a conservative, he might not have agreed with the English-only idea. He was married three times, each time to a Latina, and he wanted a phrase in spanish on his tombstone.

The Wikipedia bio at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne includes this:

Quote:
At the time of his death, John Wayne resided in a bayfront house in Newport Beach, California. He requested his tombstone read, "Feo, Fuerte y Formal" the Mexican epitaph meaning he was ugly, strong and dignified. However, the grave is unmarked for privacy.

Things are so different now. Americans aren't encouraged to learn other languages just when it would be a good thing. I wish I learned Spanish. It would be handy today.

Svenn amazes me in his command of this bizarre language. He and so many learn the oddball stuff. He seems to get all the contractions. That's amazing to me.

Since no one saw the humor in this...
I'll tell you why it is 'funny' to me.

It's funny to me because I have been in battles with the fucking inept cable company here who, for reasons unbeknownst to me, couldn't even get my fucking phone number RIGHT on the bill. Took months to clear THAT up.
Last month I had been sent a shut off notice. I go and pay the bill before the shutoff date, and even call in my 'verification number'. So what do the insolent fuckers do? They shut off my cable the day before my broadcast party - which had to be cancelled.

Then, I call some lady whom I tried to spell my name to for FIFTEEN MINUTES before hanging up, pissed as a rhino! Finally I get someone else who speaks a little englisha, and tells me they cannot send anyone out until the following Wednesday morning. Well, no one shows up. Infuriated, I call back and DEMAND to speak to someone who speaks, understands and comprehends english.

The guy was very apologetic, and was in awe that they had fucked me over so badly, and agreed the cable should not have been shut off, and was appalled that no work order had been processed for me on Wednesday. He said, "I am gonna make this up to you sir. Since you shouldn't have been disconnected in the first place, there will be no installation charge, and we will give you a rate of 19.95 a month for, say a year. How's that?"  - Now THAT is what I call taking care of a customer! Having managed customer service for a music distribution company back in the day, I knew when the customer was right, and when I had to take a bow and do my duty to make the customer happy.

Well, the cable got turned back on the same day the guy said it would.

I get my bill last week. 73 fucking dollars! They charged me for installation AND 23.99 for the month. Sooooooooo, I called yesterday and got another non english speaking/ understanding customer care hijacker, so hung up.

If we HAVE to learn another language, which is it? Spanish? French? Arabic? You won't find me working at a fucking 7/11 France without at least knowing the language.
Only other language I learned was some greek for the sake of translation, and that was so long ago I could care less don't remember any of it.

And if history serves me correct, English was NOT the original langauge of this country. It was TAUGHT to the natives, whom lost their own language to the immigrants. They also lost their land too.

Don't get me started!
Carl

I agree whole heartedly with Vig's observation. When Lin and I lived on St. Maarten I felt very much like a stupid American :-[

Most of the people there speak at least 3 and often more languages and that is without a high dollar education system!

....tim, who took Russian and German in school and remembers
nada!!!
