Post by kimmiedawn81 on Jan 12th, 2007, 12:02pm
Where did you go on your honeymoon?  What all did you do?  Was is all-inclusive?  Would you recommend it?  Did you go through a travel agent or book online?

Please let me know!  Thank you!

For our 20th anniversary, we went on a cruise to the Bahamas (our first cruise) ... semi all-inclusive (drinks, tips, and tours not included, but always plenty of food).

Overall, very enjoyable - worth considering.

The Hyatt Regency in Anahiem next to Disney land. (I had to be back on my ship the following Monday). Never left the suite so I can't tell you if there was anything to do.
If you already have or have enough time to get passports you may want to think about the Caribbean, which has some really nice resorts plus fun things for young couples to do like scuba diving. Hawaii is nice too.

Flo, have you been to Atlantis?? I hear that place is really nice. How about the Keys, bro? Any nice places there that offer some fun?

Saw Atlantis from a distance (mile or so) - the boat stopped for a day in Nassau I went to Paradise Island for a bird watching tour, but didn't go in the Atlantis complex.  Stayed in Key Largo a few years ago and drove to Key West for a day - saw the Truman and Hemingway homes, walked around town, took a sail and snorkel package.  Largo is more for fishing and outdoor activities, Key West for partying (Miami for partying, Tampa/Ybor for Partying, etc.)

Kim,
Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about cruising! I am particularly fond of the Caribbean....Yucatan Peninsula. And, if you want the BEST service, the BEST experience, look at Celebrity Cruises!
When you cruise, the nights are generally used for transport time. That gives you time to enjoy all the anemities of the  ship........elegant dining, (or casual, if you prefer), dancing in one of 4-5 different nightclubs, a casino, a stage show, or intimate chats in the martini bar....or wine bar....or...or....
there is soo much to do, sometimes it's hard to get up the next morning...... but you MUST! That's when you generally pull into port, for a day of shore excursions and sightseeing...of course, if you're honeymooning, well, leaving the room is NOT mandatory! You can do as much or as little as you wish when you cruise. Personally, I like to find a day when we are in a port that is a do-over for me, and I book some time at the spa, when everyone is out doing stuff onshore........and, of course, if you have a few days at sea, spend them poolside, try the drink of the day, and join in the pool parties that are constant, with music and fun!

Orr, you could just pick a good hotel, save the explanations and just be sure they have room service!
 ;)

Spend some time with a good travel agent.........

Actually we took our honeymoon in Southern California and then spent a few days in Vegas.  Our favorite part of Vegas was renting a Harley and spending a day going out in the red rock area and coming back by the dam.  Took all day, had a riot.  And yes.  It is possible to make love on an Electra Glide at 55 MPH.

Took a cruse out of Florida to the islands and it was my first cruse and we loved every minute of it. But if you take one bring some alcohol with you when you go the bar tab when you are at sea days can kill you and once you hit any port they x-ray everything you bring back on board and take any alcohol and keep it until the last night on ship before they give it back but when you first go on the ship they don’t seem to care.

Kimmie, for my honeymood, back in good old 1969, we were poor, so we drove through the lower part of Canada, down the east coast, then back over to good old Ohio.

Since then, though, now that we are older, we taken cruises, and have gone to all inclusive resorts.  The cuises were wonderful and very enjoyable - with several different port of call where you could leave the ship, sight see, shop, partake of a wide variety of activities on shore.  Then back to the ship for the next port.  You pay for the cruise and you get the shipboard entertainment nightly (which is very good), casinos, shopping, etc.  You do have to pay for your alcoholic beverages separately (and trust me, unless you are very careful, that bill they present you before you can leave the ship can be very surprising!) You can sign up for a variety of different shore excursions, but once on shore, you pay for whatever you have chosen to do.

However, once I learned what an "all inclusive" resort was, it is by far hands down, the best vacation expereriences I've ever had.  All you need to do every day is get out of bed, and get dressed (and in some places, dressing is optional)  Everything - and I mean EVERYTHING, is provided for you  (except the sex, of course  ;;D) - food, drinks, stocked refrigerator in your room, nightly entertainment with musical floor shows, casino nights, costume parties, whatever.  Since these resorts are mostly in desirable locations (many the same locations that cruise ships stop at), the same excursions are available to you.  You just book them through your resort, and you do have to pay for them, but at the same rate as the cruise ship charges.

Plus, at an all inclusive resort, you usually have a town or city within easy walking distance, or bike/buscab ride, where there is wonderful shopping, great little restaurants/bars, etc.

I love Playa del Carmen, Mexico, but, I'm much older than you (Playa is a little bit older crown).  The Cancun area is wonderful, and a quick, cheap (less than a buck) ride on the bus (pronounced "boooos") takes you down the strip with all the great clubs, bars, hang-outs for a great, fun evening on the town.  Also, for what it's worth, you can go to WalMart (pronounced WaaaalMart), in Cancun and buy liquor to take home, cheaper than in the duty free shops at the Cancun airport.

My vote - all inclusive - especially in Mexico.

Sandy

Well, Brian and I don't drink, so alcohol won't be a big deal.

I would like to go to an all-inclusive resort without kids....but we shall see.  I'm definitely taking in all that you guys are telling me.

For our second honeymoon we went to Vancouver British Columbia(Canada).  We flew into Vancouver and rented a car with unlimited miles.  We drove across the border to Seattle and had dinner in the Space needle where you can see Mt Ranier and all of Seattle and the Pacific ocean.  It is so romantic and beautiful.  Then we went to an imax theature and watched a film about Mt. St. Helans erupting.  Then we went and walked back to our hotel.  Then the next day we got up early and took the fairy over to Vancouver Island and landed in Victoria.  We toured a castle and the butterfly gardens.  It was fun!!  We spent the night there.  Then got up and drove up the coast 4 hours and then gassed up and drove 4 hours accross Vancouver Island to a tiny town called Tofino.  The 4 hour drive accross the island has no gas stations or stops.  It is dense rain forest and lakes and rivers and is absolutly breath taking.  Once in Tofino we stayed in a bread and breakfast that we found on the internet.  Our room had a view of the ocean harber and you could see boats there and whales jumping in the distance.  While in Tofino we went on an 8 hr boat ride to see whales.  We saw lots of Orcas come up and jump by the boat.  It was fantastic.  Then the next day we went on a keyak trip.  It was a 2 person keyak.  My husband and I partnered up.  We had never keyaked before.  It was easy to do.  We went out in the ocean to an island.  We saw bald Eagles nests and the birds.  We saw bears.  We saw Orcas jump up by us.  Then we went to a hot springs and had lunch and then we paddled back.  The sun was setting when we got back it was a life time experience!  Then we drove back accross the island and caught a ferry the next day to Vancouver.  We spent the day in the room recovering because we were so worn out and tired.  Then the next day we drove around Vancouver seeing the sites.  Then we returned the rental car and flew home.  I want to go back to tofino again some time.  I would recomend any of these places as a good place to go or all of the above.  We took a week in a half to do all this.  It was the honeymoon of a lifetime.

We went to Hawaii last year. It was very expensive and over rated compared to British Columbia.

My wife and I, 30 years ago just drove the Calif/Oregon coast & Columibia River.

My daughter, who was just married last November, went 1st class.  20 days in Saychelle Islands/Kenya/South Arifca.  Everything 5 star, even private helicopter shuttle among the Saychelles.

Price tag - $40,000.

They loved it and swear they will go back agin.

Grabbed the box of cards on the way out the door of our reception and headed for Chicago. My bride opened all the cards and counted the cash on the way so we could figure out how long we could stay.

Went out to dinner, several museums, top of the John Hancock building, etc. Two 21-year-olds having the time of their lives in the big city. Made it back to Milwaukee on Wednesday of the following week in time to roll back into class (we were both in college full-time).

That was 25 years ago this October. Now we usually get crazy by going out for Chinese, watching a movie, and going to bed.

I see that you're in IL and are getting hitched in August.

IMHO, the Caribbean is too hot in August. Also, I don't like cruise ships because they're too crowded and the rooms are so small.

I recommend either the Canadian Rockies or Alaska. They're both spectacular in the Summer.

Canadian Rockies - drive the Icefields Parkway and stop at all the scenic spots. Stay at the Banff Springs Resort, Chateau Lake Louise and Jasper Park Lodge.

Alaska - Tour Denali and do a full day Kenai Fjords wildlife & glacier boat tour out of Seward.

I've done those trips on a bike and they're awesome.

I'd second the vote for the west coast of B.C. here in Canada - Tofino is breathtaking although, as Karla says, it IS a drive across the island to get there.  Victoria is also gorgeous.

However, you may want to check with the BC Travel Bureau for this year before you book.  They've had a horrific winter out there, major wind storms, SNOW (which is usually unheard of for them), flooding and just miserable weather.  Stanley Park in Vancouver is devastated - old growth forest ripped out by the roots because of all the rain.  We're praying for our BC folks right now that an end comes to this awful weather they've been having.  The Island (where Tofino and Victoria are) have had it the worst from the sounds of it, so I'm not sure what the beaches and the privately owned B & B's are like anymore.  Major long-term power outages and fresh water shortages.  I'd be really careful checking this out before you book.

Our Canadian Rockies are gorgeous though - Lake Lousie, especially.  Here's Chateau Lake Louise:
http://www.purewest.com/accommodations/chateau_lake_louise/chateau.html

Here's a website about Canadian Rockies vacations:
http://www.vacations-canada.com/alberta/banff/banff.htm

Banff and Lake Louise are right on my doorstep (about an hour west of us) and I've lived here all my life.  I never get tired of the majesty of our Rockies.

If you're travelling in August, that's a great time to visit Western Canada.

Krista and I did a transatlantic cruise, starting in the carribbean.  We did a few islands there and then went across the atlantic for another 4 stops in europe.  We went on Celebrity, it was awesome.

We enjoyed it because we got the sun and beach stuff for a few days and also did some tours of europe.  It took 17 days and i would highly reccommend it.

well, Tim, you can scratch that one off your list. :(  They discontinued that line a few years back due to budget cuts.

It was a beautiful journey too - from Calgary through the Rockies out to Vancouver.  I did that with my mom when I was a young girl and I still remember how cool that was.

CN (our national railroad) has decided that they will only travel the north route now - through Edmonton.  (that's a swear word to any self-resepecting Calgarian)

I agree Lake Louis and Banniff and the Rocklies are beautiful as well.  I am disapointed to hear that the train ride has discontinued.  That was one thing we still wanted to do in life was ride the train out and accross the rockies.  There are lots of things to do at Lake Louis and Banniff for summer or winter.  This would be my second choice of a honey moon if I couldn't do what I posted earllier about.  I would talk to a travel agent and make reservations for the place early.  It is like a resort and is a very popular place.

We went to Paris.  Nothing was included.

It was expensive but amazing.

USE A TRAVEL AGENT!!!!!  Make sure everyone knows you are on your honeymoon  EVERYONE  (Airlines, hotel, .....)  You can get a lot of free stuff.

If you want to spend a lot less we loved our cruise.Again a travel agent might get you a room upgrade.... get a BALCONY!!!!! Very romantic and awesome for early morning coffee.

All inclusive resorts like Moon Palace outside of Cancun are very good as well.  The "Palace" chain might have a new one open that is even better.

Even less expensive is Niagra Falls, which can be very nice.

If you want to spend even less, how about Branson Missouri.  I would be happy to come down and give you a tour.

Even cheaper.  Chewy and Jonny will host you at Chez Jonny.  Everything is made of shiny metal including your hosts.  he beer is free but you have to rent a car to hit your own dinner.

My kids got married in Jamacia and stayed a week.

Hedionism II -- great hotel, lots to do - all inlclusive (and they have a nude beach - if you like that sorta stuff - it was hillarious watching people walk off that beach -- had a lawn chair set up daily!).  Anyhow in their wedding video, a lady walked off the nude beach with a hat on (and that's ALL). The guy taking the video got a great shot of her right in the middle of the wedding pics. Made for great conversation years later.

And they have mirrors on the ceilings and NO TV or newspapers.

There are packets (from travel agents) that include air fair, hotel and all the frills. It's not all that expensive and a great place for a honeymoon even in August.

Hugs BD

Kim, there are some great suggestions above. I would from experience second or third...I have lost track...avoid the Carib in August even by ship. Too hot!! Cane season!!!

Are you looking to leave the states? If not renting a deluxe houseboat at Lake Powell is fantastic and the heat is not a factor. Also well within your budget.

Personally, I am dying to do the Canada thing and I did find a link that still runs some good tours.

http://www.canadayourway.com/vactyp/101.html

Look at the "Majestic Rockies By Rail"!

and now for my hijack.....

I flew home from Vietnam the day before our wedding in Chicago, my parents drove us up to "Lake Lawn Lodge" at Lake Delavan, WI. where we spent the next 4 days in the room.

Parents picked us up, back to Chicago and back away from the world for me. To this day I can't remember which felt better, coming home for my wedding or getting back to my mates [smiley=huh.gif]. Weird.....But 36 years and we are still stuck on each other!

Looking forward to Congratulating both of you :-*...Tim

We were in Grand Cayman in Feb when a "tropical storm" hit without warning (at least we didn't know it was coming). We were sitting at the bar when it hit (outside). We just took our drinks, crawled under the bar and went right on like we had good sense.  It passed and we had another drink to celebrate it's passing.

It really doesn't matter where you spend the first few days after the ceremony - -it's the "honeymoon" in later years that really make the difference. Hope your life is one long honeymoon.
