Title: Re: Feel Cheated?? Post by brewcrew on Jan 10th, 2007, 12:56pm If I thought there was something unfair about it, and I was one of those who worship the almighty dollar, I'd become one of them. Since I'm not, it doesn't bother me in the least. It's the way capitalism works. Get over it. |

Title: Re: Feel Cheated?? Post by floridian on Jan 10th, 2007, 1:01pm You're welcome to believe that these Wall Street bonuses are the result of the financial wizards somehow creating value, not skimming from the workers and common shareholders. Title: Re: Feel Cheated?? Post by Paul98 on Jan 10th, 2007, 1:17pm Funny how I have never really worried if someone else earns more than me or if sombody else won the lottery. If I don't have enough to pay the bills I either spend less or earn more. I think my neighbor can do the same. If he wants the CEO pay can apply for the job. Nobody said life is fair. -P. |

Title: Re: Feel Cheated?? Post by floridian on Jan 10th, 2007, 1:39pm Ok, if you all think that life is life, and there is no use talking about things we think are wrong, STFU about Ted Kennedy!! I realize that the right-wing talking points say it is time to bring up Kennedy's past because he is leading opposition to the Presidents Iraq plan. But this is America, and Ted gets relected election after election. If you don't like it, move to Kyrgizistan! (The fact that someone else wins the lottery doesnt bother me - I understand how it works. If my neighbor works hard and gets a raise or promotion or new job, great for him. But what is happening here is that the upper 1% is taking an ever larger share of the pie, and it has nothing to do with merit or worth or how people actually work. They are simply in a position to do so. Couple that with a tax system that shifts the burden to the 98% in the middle and lower end, and it changing America in a way that is neither inevitable or desirable. ) |

Sure, there are plenty of sources - lemme dig. I did not say that the middle and lower income tax payers shoulder 98% of the burden. What I am saying is that under the tax reforms of the past 6 years, the top 2% got nearly half of the tax cuts (in terms of dollars) and are paying a lower percent, and the burden is being shifted to the other 98%. |

Sure, although proposing a better system (or reforming the current one, which is all I suggest) requires starting with a discussion of what's wrong today. And the series of Enron-styled heists, pension system failures (today it was Delta Airlines), insider trading and back-dating options to cheat the average investor, and the crisis in health care all provide good starting points. These are all market failures, they disprove the dogmatic belief that the market will always lead to optimal results. |

My credentials are not even known to you, buddy. It is your socialism that has me concerned. It appears to me that you truly believe in your heart of hearts that life can somehow be equal and fair and just for everyone. In order for that to happen, evil (i.e., greed) must be taken out of the equation. I don't see that happening anytime soon. The fact remains that the top 1% of earners paid about 37% of federal income taxes and 25% of all federal taxes in 2004. The top 20% of income earners paid about 67% of all federal taxes. By contrast, families in the bottom 40% of income earners (incomes below approximately $36,000) typically paid no federal income tax and received money back from the government. These, too, are facts. It's your Pollyanna-ish outlook that concerns me. If you would move beyond it and learn to accept that life isn't fair - I mean really accept it, not just pay lip service to it - life would become so much more enjoyable. So what if Wall Street managers get astronomical bonuses? The price they have to pay for those bonuses usually involves the sale of their souls. I'll have no part of it, and as a result, I'm one of the happiest guys I know. If it's a fight you're looking for, look elsewhere. |

What a joker you are. :) Ultimate and absolute equality ? I agree - its not gonna happen. But we live in a democracy, and we can make policies that favor fairness and equality, that actually make things better. Or we can make policies that do the opposite. Sure, I could 'really accept' the idea that life is unfair, not do anything about it, and be blissful. By the same respect, maybe we should all accept the idea that life is about sickness and decline, it culminates in death, and rather than look at the problem and try to change things, we should sing 'don't worry, be happy.' No need to get worked up over new treatments for CH to improve things for everyone, lets just ride out the pain and enjoy the PF times?? I'm all for positive thinking. But not your style. |

For the last 20+ years until my back injury I worked as an Estate Manager for the Mega Rich (centimillionaires need not apply) and since Linda did the books in each case I am very aware of just how they manage to not pay their fair share of taxes if any at all! Finally, having lost my socks in investments made in Global Crossing, Enron, and MCI to mention a few I am very pissed ! What is going on now IS pretty new. Net job growth is at the slowest pace in at least the 25 years i have recollection of. Under this administration, real earnings is about flat, net new (non-govt, non-farm) jobs is not even keeping up with the population growth. The national savings rate, which was at 0% due to rounding, has actually gone negative. In the meantime, we are borrowing 2 billion dollars per day just to operate the government. Title: Re: Feel Cheated?? Post by georgej on Jan 11th, 2007, 1:32am No, I don't feel cheated, but I'll bet the stockholders in a large U.S. based home-improvement company do. After their lackluster CEO recently "resigned" by popular demand, (he's "pursuing other interests" now) the board of directors authorized a settlement for him that totaled 210 million dollars. That's seven times what's paid for all incentive programs annually, company-wide. Pretty good payout for being a screwup. Next time they might consider standing on the sidewalk, spitting in any direction, and making whoever it lands on the CEO at a flat $200 K a year. It would be cheaper in the long run no matter how useless the spittee might be. Better yet, use a chimpanzee, and feed him bananas. Preferably anyone who doesn't think uselessly occupying a chair entitles him to live like a pasha. I don't think questioning this sort of nest-feathering is socialist--if it is, then crank up the "Internationale", baby. If I were a stockholder in this company (but they are plague dogs as far as I'm concerned until they fire their present board) I'd have some hard questions for the board of directors. Entirely too much of this stuff goes on now. It's bad for the companies involved, it's bad for stockholders, and it's bad for the average people who work for those companies. Until investors demand regulatory changes that will put more power into the hands of stockholders, it will continue. Perhaps those changes would encourage more employees to vest in the company as well--after all, would you be encouraged to buy stock in your company if you saw these shenanigans going on in the boardroom? Best, George |

Title: Re: Feel Cheated?? Post by Charlie on Jan 11th, 2007, 3:12am Actually, there is nothing wrong with socialism when it works. It doesn't. We are told that we live in a capitalist society but our modern version has a feudal quality not seen in about 120 years. I have no problem with people raking in tons-o-cash so long as somewhere along the way just a tiny bit of social conscience is displayed. It's hard to spot today. Even guys like Nixon knew enough to toss a bone now and then to keep us quiet.... Bush just doesn't like us. You gotta give him and his pals credit though they know how to get people vote against their own self-interest. Charlie |
