for a hacking cough that just won't go away?

I had a sinus infection that went down in my chest and now I'm coughing so bad I hurt all over. It's waking me up in the middle of the night (even after the melatonin) and I'm miserable. My head is still stopped up too.

I've taken cough syrup that the doc gave me, Nyquill, Deyhum, Vicks, and a few other things (Jack was my FIRST choice). Nothing seems to stop it and it HURTS to cough right now.

I've even tried a pint of prune juice (actually it helped about a day or so - but then the cough came back).

Anyone have any home remedies -- I'm open to any suggestion...

Barb - don't be the fool I was. Get yourself to a doctor before it gets worse, its time for anti-biotics when that lot hasn't worked and it's hurting to cough.

Vicodin, Percocet, or a couple of Tylenol 3's will calm that cough down, but it won't cure what's ailin' ya. Helen's right - get to the doc. He can give you something stronger to calm the cough while you take something else (antibiotic) to kill the bugs that are causing it.

Yup antibiotics from a doc........but in the meantime....take a hot steamy shower and breathe as deep as possible right next to the shower stream.... and sleep as upright as possible. OH and mucinex ROCKS it helps make a cough into a productive cough (ya know get all the junk out)

and from your neighbour to the North - git yer ar$e to the doctor, woman!!!! Don't make me come down there and get you!!!!!

I had the same thing in October and ended up having to use an asthma inhaler and codeine syrup to just settle the damned thing down.

Now Git!!!! ;;D

Barb,

Lots of pneumonia and bronchiolitis cases around here so unless ya want to go there, get your butt to the doctor now! (and take the rest of ya, too) :)

I had a bad cough recently that sounds like what you have. Does the sinus drain at night, run down your throat and cause the cough? I used Benedryl pills twice a day and it dried the sinus. And a peppermint candy, you know, the little red and white hard mints. Tuck one away in you mouth at bed time. Don't suck on it, just leave it and it will desolve over a few hours time. They won't leave a hangover feeling or gum up your throat like you can get from cough syrups or cough drops.

Barb, I don't know a home cure for that, sorry. I had a bad cough in 2004 and the only thing which worked was Silomat cough tablets (which luckily tasted like licorice,yum!), which I got from my local pharmacy.
