Title: It's Our Independence Day! Post by sandie99 on Dec 6th, 2006, 3:04am Today Finland celebrates it 89th Independence Day! :) http://www.minedu.fi/etusivu/arkisto/2006/1602/pics/suomenlippu.jpg Soon our President, Primeminister, other ministers and other political figures gather to the Cathetral at the heart of Helsinki for Independence Day Mass. Around noon many Finns gather to watch The Unknown Soldier film on TV. It's a movie classic, always shown on the Independence Day. There are 3 versions of it and today we can see the oldest and the best. People go to visit grave yards and bring candles to the graves. Not just their own loved ones, but the soldiers who were killed at the wars and to our former presidents' graves as well. At 3pm there will be military parade, which is helled at different city each year. Often we can see also military orhestra concerts on Independence Day, too. The days celebrations highlight begins at 6.50pm when the President and her husband will give a special interview to the press before their annual Independence Day Reception, a ball, which gathers Finns from politics, arts, sports, business world, all kind of religion repserentatives and all the ambassidors, who are representing their country in Finland. 2000 people gather then to Presidental Palace and most Finns gather infront of the TV to watch it. The dresses, the people, the interviews are talked about weeks and sometimes even years after the event. Every year Finns are reminded that our freedom, our independence, is not something we should take for granded. My grandparents' generation paid a high price to get it. The rest of us can only hear about it, read about it, learn about it and hope that we will never have to go through the same. All the vetherans are admired, respected and every year there will be a special fundraising for their honor, so that they will be taken care of. For me freedom is precious, and it's important. I know that my grandfather (Captain during the wars, Major afterwards) was there to fight for it. http://www.sauna.org/eggnog/images/1206-thumb.jpg HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, FINLAND! Wishes, Sanna |

Post by sandie99 on Dec 6th, 2006, 3:18am Those, who want to know more about Finland, click here: http://virtual.finland.fi/ The Independence Day Reception will be held for the 68th time this year. This year everybody will want to know if Lordi, our Eurovision Song Contest winning band, are attending. The President has sent them invitations, but their attendence is not sure, because they cannot wear their masks at the Presidental Palace. The Palace has rules, which forbid wearing any kind of masks at the Palace. Sanna |

Thank you, Jonny. I feel so awful that something like that happened... :'( That accident happened in Jyväskylä, the very same city where I live. We were actually thinking about going to see the parade, because neither one of us have seen it before. But we didn't, because my boyfriend's collague had invited us over for mullet vine and ginger cookies on the same time. Mike, if you're invited to the Presidental Palace, the famous bunch (12% alcohol), vines, etc. are free. Otherwise you're on your own. ;) But I had a great Independence Day. We lit a candle to the memory of all the soldiers and vetherans. We had home made mince meat pastries and pasta bolognese. We visited my boyfriend's collegue. We watched the Independence Day Reception and admired the gowns. This year black dresses with all sort of glittering stuff was in. And so were red dresses as well. Best wishes, Sanna |
