Title: One small favor.... Post by Donna_D. on Dec 1st, 2006, 2:45am ....is the response I got from a friend of mine who is in the US Army when I asked him what he wanted me to send him for Christmas. He is stationed in Gardez, Afghanistan at the moment and is not going to be able to spend Christmas at home with his own family. He didn't want anything for himself he just asked me for one small favor. He asked that I send writing pads, color books and crayons so that he and his buddies can hand them out to the local children. He said it would be the next best thing to being able to see his own family open their Christmas presents. I am still going to put together a package just for him anyways. If anyone has thought about sending a package to one of the brave people serving our country I would be happy to share his address with you. I am sure he would appreciate anything and would be willing to share with his fellow soldiers any good tidings he receives. It is amazing to me that someone who has already given up so much would be so selfless as to ask for something for others. If anyone wants an address to send anything to him or to me to include in his Christmas box, PM me. God Bless all our Men and Women who serve our country. DD |

Title: Re: One small favor.... Post by LadyElaine1 on Dec 1st, 2006, 9:59am Oh what a good person to think of the kid. You can go to the dollar tree and stock up on toys. What to get him hmmm, phone card, newspaper, a coffee can full of pop corn, Bug repellant anti itch cream (in case the first does not work) candy bars (maybe a big bag or two of the mini-sized ones), good for him, good for GI/kid relations powdered drink mix in packets that make 1 quart (the size of his canteen) Music CDs or tapes; buy or make one, if he does not have a discman, some one else does, and God knows they've listened to anything they brought enough times to be sick of it, it can be traded if it is not his taste batteries for portable electronic devices aterless hand sanitizer Baby wipes Gold Bond powder A bundle of news magazines (Time, Newsweek, etc.) Small toys (eg Matchbox cars) for local children Hard (non-melting) candies Hunters' hand- and feet-warming chemical pads (VERY useful in winter) Sealable, non-perishable food items (jerky, for example) Small paperback books Survival gear is generally appreciated -- he might like a nice new Leatherman or Gerber tool if he doesn't have one. |

Title: Re: One small favor.... Post by Donna_D. on Dec 1st, 2006, 10:04am Thanks Guys!! I am taking the kids today to buy a few things to put in the mail to him. It is a good time to teach the kids about the joy of giving and even though times are tough around here this year it will make us ALL feel good to help others. It is difficult for us to imagine what goes through the minds of these young men and women so I have included a couple of excerpts from his recent emails to give us all an idea. Quote:

Elaine those are GREAT ideas!!! He did say no booze and no porn as those would get him in trouble LOL! I hadn't thought about hand sanitizer or baby wipes but that is a great idea!! I am sure I can pick up a lot of those things really easily! God Bless You! DD |

Title: Re: One small favor.... Post by kcopelin on Dec 1st, 2006, 12:25pm Add me to the list y'all. My friend John has two sons who have served in Iraq-Adam just got out of the Army after two tours in Afganistan and two in Irag with the 82nd Airborne. His youngest son Todd is in Bagdad right now...just heard from him a couple of days ago. Todd was involved in a 7 hour fire-fight and killed two men. My friend is pissed off-deeply- because we need to either totally kick butt or get our kids out of there. Your list totally takes me back to when my dad was in Vietnam-same kind of things we sent him- Thanks kathy |
