I just wonder if someone could recommed a great book about internet.

I'm working on my dissertation about online fanhood and I need to include something about internet's history and development.

Naturally I'm spoiled with choice, so book which tells the basics in a simple manner would be lovely. If get into too much detail, my dissertation page count could easily double... [smiley=laugh.gif] Here the works are usually between 70 and 120 pages long.
I asked help from the people at my department, but you know the uni folks...they know a thing or 2 about their own topics and not much about anything else. :-/
(When I come to think of it; why do I stress about my dissertation? After all, my tutor has admitted that she has no idea what I'm writing about...)

All the tips would be useful! :)

Physics graduate Tim Berners-Lee has been given the first ever Millennium Technology Prize for inventing the World Wide Web. It was released on the internet in 1991 for free - if he had decided to patent it, the WWW would be completely different! He was working at the particle physics laboratory CERN, in Geneva, when he was developing the WWW, and now he works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology devloping it further. That is about the World Wide Web, not the internet, don't worry most people get them confused.

I don't know of any books but knowing that the public internet was started in 1975 will help. Look at the bottom. (http://www.computerhistory.org/timeline/?year=1975) There is lots of good info on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet) but I wouldn't quote anything there. Check out the sources at the bottom. You might find a lead to a good book there.

Right out of college, I was the entire IT (today's term) departmant for half billion dollar company in Houston 83' to 86' with 13 offices and 180 terminals (Data General equip.), my last project there was looking into internet capabilities.

I've actually seen some "for the dummies" books at my local library. Perhaps they'll have this one, too.

My first introduction to the :internet: was then called :arpanet: on Sept 7 1973. Internet was our nickname for it. Its birth was when the first four nodes were hooked up in 1969. They were USC, Standford, UCSB and the U of Utah.
I don't know of any books on the subject right off the top of my head. But I could bore you with a few thousand words of the early history from a personal point of view.
If memory servs there are one or two other old systems wonks that used to be on the board. Don't remember who.
