Title: NEW Daily Mail Article..
Post by LeLimey on Nov 26th, 2006, 12:40pm
Which Roy and I had a part in! Just goes to show that the last crappy article was crappy because of what the interviewee said rather than the paper..
They left out an awful lot of what was said but at least what they printed made sense (and no I don't live in Merseyside but I didn't want my real location in a National Newspaper!)

Medical Myth that’s a headache for women.

Headaches are often seen as a minor condition but sufferers of so-called “Cluster Headaches” (CH) which affect between 1 and three people per thousand worldwide, describe recurring bouts of pain which can reduce grown men to tears.

Roy Collins, 60, from Norfolk, says “ The extreme pain wakes me from sleep and lasts from 20 minutes to two hour, usually with reddening and tearing of the eye on the affected side (CH is almost always one-sided) a runny nose, high temperature and sweating. “It goes as suddenly as it came – but I might have another attack the same night”

Until recently it was thought to affect mainly men. Now it’s clear that many more women suffer than was previously thought, and also children.

Unfortunately the legacy of what Professor Peter Goadsby of the Institute of Neurology in London calls this “medical myth” is that many women and children are still not accurately diagnosed. “It’s sad enough to think of adults having this dreadful condition but for children with it to be given inappropriate treatment or told they’re “nutters” brings tears to your eyes” he says.

Nine out of ten sufferers have episodic CH where attacks come in bouts lasting perhaps nine to ten weeks, once or twice a year. Chronic CH gives sufferers virtually no remission.

Helen Kemp, 41, from Merseyside recalls her first acute experience three years ago: “I was at a friend’s house when I had this excruciating pain around my left eye. As my husband drove me home I was banging my head on the dashboard with the pain” Her doctor and dentist diagnosed sinusitis and prescribed antibiotics. Once she was hospitalised with an attack that sent her blood pressure soaring. After extensive tests, she was finally diagnosed with cluster headaches.

Sadly, CH can run in families and Helen’s son Jasper, five, was diagnosed with it two years ago. So far treatment is limited to controlling the pain with vaso (blood vessel) constricting drugs. Helen finds that breathing in pure oxygen via a mask that delivers 15 litres per minute is the most effective “abortive” therapy for herself and Jasper.

“Drinking strong coffee or Red Bull at the beginning of an attack also helps constrict the blood vessels, as do ice or heat-packs on the back of your neck and eyes”

Alcohol is the only known trigger and must be avoided.

The best hope for treatment is to understand the brain dysfunction which causes attacks says Professor Goadsby.

“Since they typically occur at the same time of the day and year, we know they’re aligned to the circadian or circannual rhythms (the daily and annual cycles of our internal body clock). Brain-imaging suggests they emanate from the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus gland, which controls the human body clock. Meanwhile doctors must be better informed so they can help sufferer’s to cope”

Not for any reason other than I have a psychotic first ex who isn't allowed by the courts to have my address Bobski! I haven't seen him since March of 2001 thankfully (he now lives in Ohio) but he has family here still and they are all nucking futs. I'd still vomit in fear if I saw him now.

?????????????????????

Was that the reporters conclusion?

Yup. She asked about triggers and I said the most consistant one was alcohol but not for all of us by a long shot. I told her I could drink anything but red wine myself. I DID tell her about nitro but she obviously didn't listen.
I ALSO told her that whilst some things like paint and booze COULD trigger a cycle we would get hit anyway even without those - it wasn't perfect but over all at least it wasn't  a complete pile of poo.
