Title: Re: My 10 yrs old 's Christmas wish list Post by BB on Nov 24th, 2006, 12:01am Thanks Lisa and George for your kind words :-* I am very proud of my sons, they are good kids. What really struck me was that here is a boy who literally could have whatever he wished and he goes to a private school where 7 years olds have their own laptop and travel to Paris every year with their families. I guess it shows that kids dont need to have expensive things to be happy and parenting style do play a big role in how they turn out. Peer pressure will get worse in the teenage years but I hope the solid moral base they have from now will help guide them in the right direction. Annette |

Title: Re: My 10 yrs old 's Christmas wish list Post by BB on Nov 24th, 2006, 7:28pm Thank you everyone for your kind words :-* I showed Edwyn the thread and upon reading it he had this big ear to ear grin then he turned around and asked me : " mom, are all these nice people saying that I did good? " . I gave him a hug and said " you did very good, son" and he bounced away happily. Thanks all for making his day and for reinforcing for him that doing the right/good things will earn rewards that money can never buy: love and respect ! :) Thank you Annette |

Title: Re: My 10 yrs old 's Christmas wish list Post by BB on Nov 25th, 2006, 4:35pm Thank you very much everyone for your encouragement :-* We have decided this is how we are going to do it. On Boxing Day he will open his present and will get $36 cash as the first month worth of sponsorship. We will then go online to visit World Vision at their website www.worldvision.com.au and see which child has been waiting the longest for sponsorship. Edwyn will register to sponsor that child online. After that he will save $1 per day from his pocket money to put in a special coin box with the childs name on it. At the end of each month I will make up the short fall which should be $5 or $6, then we will take it to the bank and Edwyn can deposit it into his saving account, where he has the direct debit for the sponsorship. All correspondence will go in Edwyns name and he can write and send the child letters and cards whenever he wants. We will involve Andy in the whole process without pressuring him. Hopefully he will see it as fun and as a good thing to do so that he will want to do the same thing some day. Painfree wishes to all. Annette |

Title: Re: My 10 yrs old 's Christmas wish list Post by Paul98 on Nov 25th, 2006, 7:38pm Annette- You have two wonderful kids! Such bright eyes. Your post reminded me of a Christmas many years ago; (very opposite of your son's wish.) I was very poor and ate (or lack there of) instant noodles for weeks so I could afford presents for my family. I had gotten a sweater and a "stocking" (I made the stocking) for my nephew. He opened the sweater, went "oh" then looked in the stocking and pulled out the fresh fruit and nuts and exclaimed "Squirrl food?" I wanted to die. My eyes filled with tears and all I could do is tell myself I tried. Your post made me smile!!! -P. |

Title: Re: My 10 yrs old 's Christmas wish list Post by BB on Nov 26th, 2006, 4:19am Hi Paul, Sorry to hear your nephew didnt know enough to appreciate the meaning of the gift you gave him, he just didnt realise the sacrifice you made behind that lovely gesture. I sure hope he will learn one day the true meaning of presents : its the thought that counts. You sure are a loving person for having gone without to be able to give all you could to your family, for that I respect and love you. Hugs and painfree wishes. Annette |

Title: Re: My 10 yrs old 's Christmas wish list Post by sandie99 on Nov 26th, 2006, 5:58am Annette, sounds like a great plan. :) Paul... [smiley=hug.gif] I'm so sorry that your presents were not appreciated. When my best friend gave me mittens her mum made one year, those mittens were the best present that year and I was hreat-broken when mum had to throw them away few winters after that because I had used them so much that they were complitely broken. And one year mum made "gift baskets" to me and my two cousins. Those tiny baskets contained raisins, nuts, one candy thing and one salty thing and we loved those baskets! I still recall the joy on all of our faces when we got those. :) Every year all the Finnish kids get a tiny stoking from school. Those stockings contain an apple and one ginger cookie we call piparkakku. And I have lots of fond memories from getting that simple stocking. :) Best wishes, Sanna |
