Title: For the Veterans in our midst Post by catlind on Nov 10th, 2006, 7:53am who may be off work today in hono(u)r of Veteran's Day or Rememberance Day tomorrow, The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, stand silent for one minute and listen to this song and video and recite this poem. And Terry Kelly's A Pittance of Time http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/chief_land_staff/remembrance/English/video.asp (just gave the link for those without highspeed) Just found it on You Tube as well: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7phct3aKuFQ In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918 ) Canadian Army IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. |

Title: Re: For the Veterans in our midst Post by AussieBrian on Nov 11th, 2006, 12:44am In Flanders' Fields inspired Moina Michael, a 49-year-old former University of Georgia professor, to mark the day forever by wearing a red poppy. It also inspired her to write "We Shall Keep the Faith" Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet - to rise anew! We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died. We cherish, too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red Of the flower that blooms above the dead In Flanders Fields. And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields. (Yes, I'm wearing a poppy.) |

Nope, freedom aint free, and I never forget that or the folks that insure it for me and mine. Those who do what must be done. Hate war, love the warriors. THANK YOU to all the vets here and all the vets past or present. I, we, us, OWE you! May we not have to relive the following, NOT teach our children the false glory of war, not have to remember the dead and maimed for dieing or sacrificing in vain. Never forget it is the old men who send young men/women to die and that it better be for more than vain glory: "There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell. – From an address to the graduating class of the Michigan Military Academy, June 19, 1879, known as his "War is hell" speech " "Its glory is all moonshine; even success the most brilliant is over dead and mangled bodies, with the anguish and lamentations of distant families ... It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. – From a personal letter, May 1865." "The scenes on this field would cure anyone of war. " William Tecumseh Sherman Regards, Jon |

Title: Re: For the Veterans in our midst Post by Jonny on Nov 11th, 2006, 1:59pm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lmnpWob9PM In Flanders Fields is one of the most famous poems about World War I, in the form of a French rondeau. It was written by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae on May 3, 1915 and published later that year in Punch magazine. The poppies referred to in the poem grew in profusion in Flanders Field, where war casualties had been buried and thus became a symbol of Remembrance Day. The poem is part of Remembrance Day solemnities in Allied countries which contributed troops to WWI, particularly in countries of the British Empire which did so. |

Title: Re: For the Veterans in our midst Post by kcopelin on Nov 11th, 2006, 4:24pm Hey y'all! I'm going to spend my veterans day doing the following: grocery shopping (done) rehersal (4 pm) watching "The War"-(as soon as I gain control of the TV) I highly recommend that movie, by the way. Kevin Costner, Elija Woods. An awesome movie about us vs. them, how we forget sometimes what started the fight in the first place, and how costly fighting wars (of any kind) can be. It's not an anti-war movie-but it is about loss, and pain and redemption and reality. I really really recommend it. When I worked on the F-16's I always got this rush-running the engines on the test cell-trying to blow them up before they went on the aircraft. And my heart still kinda skips a beat when I watch the Thunderbirds. They are weapons delivery systems-and God help the folks on the receiving end. Just like my Dad was changed when he came back from Vietnam-never the same after that, not really-so alot of my friends were changed during Desert Storm. They went over as personnel clerks and came back with souvenirs (fingers and prayer rugs and even one scalp) from the enemies dead. They weren't the same at all. Broke my heart. I had just given birth to my first child, and I watched from the safety of my home. The surgical precision of the smart bombs-never the bloody aftermath. So war has become in the eyes of too many-a video game. But to those who are there, or who have been there, war is hell. And it's because of them that I am free today to write this. Thanks Dad. God already has blessed America. Kathy |

Salute your dad for me the next time you see him. My father-in-law was 8th Army Air Corps, 486th Bomb Group based in Sudbury, England. He flew 15 combat missions, and he was telling us at dinner tonight that the first thing they did when they returned from each mission was start looking around to see which planes hadn't made it back. The way he told it, it was enough to make you see tears dripping onto your dinner plate. After the war ended, they flew hay and feed over to France for the horses, and they'd bring British POW's home on the return trip. His job then was to grab a big bellows of delousing powder and spray 'em down. When I was wheeling him back to his room after dinner, I shouted so everyone could hear, "There's a hero in the house!" |
