Title: A Job Story...Just Venting!
Post by Asia on Nov 7th, 2006, 7:33am
I'm still reading here, so I'm sure I will find some similar stories...

My last job before this cycle (4 1/2 months total): Restaurant Manager.  I was doing well...been in the biz for about 12 years, so I was already headed for promotions.

Then, bap!  CH time.  Communicated with higher ups...but I could never find a way to articulate what was going on to employers.  They always seem to look at me as if to say "soooo...you're not coming to work because...you have a headache?"

Well, I tried to hang in there until I got to the point where they were getting worse, I knew I couldn't drive an hour to work, and definitely wouldn't make it through a lunch or dinner rush in a restaurant.  It's just not the kind of job where I can say, "Oh, I'll need about 2-6 hours in the office...just keep workin' without me."

So, at the time, I paid to see a neurologist, both to try and get meds to prevent them and to get a doc's note.  He (doc) wouldn't prescribe much without running tests that I couldn't afford to pay for.  Insurance (believe it or not) wasn't due to kick in at work for another month.  By that time, of course, it's a pre-existing condition.  His "note"?  Please excuse her for a few days.  Had to beg and cry for one of longer length.

Here's the kicker: my Regional manager calls me with the Human Resources director on the line.  He says nothing while she tells me I will need to get a formal leave of absence, etc.  Finally, he pipes in to say, and I QUOTE, "Yeah, but I saw your doctor's note, and it doesn't even look real to me."  WHAT??  My heart and mind said F&^% you riiiiight about then.

Still, when a break in the cycle came, I went back to work for a week before I just went with my heart and told them - in a nice way - to go to hell.  Good thing I did, because the cycle started again in about 2 1/2 weeks.

My lesson, honestly?  With these headaches in my life (under control or not), my personality, and a deep hatred for "the system", I think it's finally time I stopped making the many companies I've worked for millions of dollars and started making money for ME.  While I whittle away the PF hours, I'm writing a business plan for my own business and thinking about how I can change my life.  I'm also a poet, so I'm working on my second book and material for performances when the cycles finally over.  And that is life.

Asia, I love your attitude! I'm sure you will turn these events into a new beginning :D

But every time I see your avatar for some reason it brings to mind a California blonde in deep denial 8)

best of luck......Tim
