Title: What's in ya??
Post by Woobie on Oct 21st, 2006, 10:30am
OK - so last night at work we were all talking about our heritage.   It's FRIKKIN amazing how many of us are MUTTS.

Me - for instance
I'm German, Scottish, English, Irish, French, (father's side) and Italian, French, and American Indian (mother's side)
French on both sides.... ::)

Do I LOOK Irish to yoU??? LMAO

Ramon's a weirdo - but a lot less complicated...

He's a black Russian.  (a smooth drink of wataaaa)  [smiley=laugh.gif]
His father was from Mississippi, and his mother imported from Russia.... (via canada...LOL) so he's 1/2 Russian, 1/2 African American.

So I think my daughter is just everything.

so - what are you?

just wonderin
woobs :-*

edited to make it a little easier to read. :-*

Actually Woobs, you do look Irish!
My mother is half Irish half American, my grandma was from Boston (via West Texas don't-cha-know?!)
My dad is West Country English (Devon and Cornwall)through and through to way back when so I'm a mix of the above!

HAAAAAAAAAA         (nice try, sister!  LOL)

Ramon doesn't have any Canadian in him - his mom just lived there... LOL
but - he still has family that lives there... his mother's sisters and his grandparents.   They came over here (to UP there...) from Russian during WWII.
His grandfather was a POW and spent a long time in the concentration camps and survived.. They were rescued by the Mennonites and taken to Canada... where they stayed... (They wrote a book - it's an interesting story.)

except Ramon's mother ... who came down here - met Ramon's father (awesome man!) and that's that.

anyhow....... yep - I gotta lot in me.
I think that's why I'm so screwed up!  I have inner battles being fought on a cellular level!
LMAO

i need to go to bed.. [smiley=laugh.gif]

peace

Heinz 57 here.

My mother and grandparents came over from England in the early 50's.  (Nottingham)

My father's paternal heritage is scottish, his grandfather came to Canada from Scotland, and then lived in the US where my grandfather was born.  My Dad's maternal ancestors are norwegian.

The story is that the Dalgety's of Scotland spread out between Canada, Australia, and India.  There's a little place in Australia called Dalgety Downs, and apparently every last Dalgety was shot.  We never determined if the lineage that went to Australia went on a prison ship or by choice ;)  No one has been able to trace any of the Dalgety's that went to India, and then there's us Canadians.

My Dad is American - supposed to be half dutch, 1/8 seminole indian, 1/8 basque immigrant (the kind that came from spain and married everyone and still called themselves basque), and 1/4 scotch.  My Mom is American - supposedly german, english, welsch, & scotch (unknown proportions).

I think that explains why I am close with a penny and where I get my eyes and my crazy hairline.  (maybe I'm a 5th of scotch?)

My husband is American - half german, and half Irish, Commanche & Appache.

Our kids are an interesting looking lot, all tall.  They love to argue, are musically inclined,  and are very gregarious.

Name used to be Gustafson 150 years ago and was supposedly changed because there were too many with that name in the Swedish Army.

I am pretty lucky in that descendants of my mother’s family have kept records since around 1700 and have produced a book of the family history.
The Verral’s had held the position of Constable Of Lews a position similar to Mayor between the years 1686 to 1837
My ancestors on my Mothers side came from the Highlands just west of Hailsham in Sussex England.
My great, great, great, Grandparents Charles & Sarah Verral immigrated to Australia in 1849 to take up farming land in the fledgling State of South Australia.
My Mother married an Irishman from somewhere around Cork, where we don’t know but we suspect that he had done a runner from deeds unknown & never talked about it.
My wife is Ukrainian and immigrated to Australia with her parents in 1951.
We have 2 children; my daughter married a Swiss who immigrated to Australia with his parents in 1970.
What will the above make my grand kid’s, they will be Australians just like the rest of us and proud of it.
Oh and if the name Coles doesn’t sound Irish that’s because I changed my name to that of the Foster family I was sent to when my mother died, I was born Barry Thomas Gelligen

Cheers
Barry

Let's see now... I'm just a Finn. ;)

Actually, my great aunt from mum's side told me once that somewhere way, way back there's some German blood. What comes to dad side... just Finns as far as I can recall. I suppose I'll be taking another look at the Hillu Family book, which has the family's history as far as it was possible to trace it.

cat, I love that german/irish sense of humor in people.  I think it's of my favorite genetic characteristics.  I like it so much, I married someone with it 30 years ago, and I still love him and that sense of humor.  All the kids got it, too.

I had to get an argument/humor tutor during the 2nd year of my marriage, so now I can keep up, sometimes.

I'm 100% German on both sides.

My Father immigrated from Leipzig, Germany and I have all the dates and things like that, but I found out that his Grandfather was a "foundling" or orphan. He was born with a huge red birthmark and his parents couldn't stand the thought of having a less than perfect son so they literally left him in a basket in front of a church where he was later adopted.

So much for trying to go back any further for geneology on that side of my family.  :-/

Something to think about when researching European names of immigrants.
We are trying to research my wife’s family in the Ukraine, the first thing we found out was that there are some silent letters in their names, for instance Nina’s maiden name has always been spelled as Woewodin in Australia but the Ukraine spelling is Wojewodyn, the j is silent and the y is sounded as i.
English speaking immigration officials in Australia tended to write down the name as it was spoken not as it was written.
This may have also happened in the US & Canada as when we looked for the maiden name of Nina’s mother we found that there were derivatives of the name Terashenko here in Oz, Canada & the US.

We are still searching as a lot of records disappeared during & after the Second World War.

Barry

Damn.... I'm a mutt and a half. My ethnicity leaves me with questions...

Part German, Irish, Swede, Scot... and 2 parts native american on mom's side (Iriqouix and Cherokee) and 1 part native on dad's (Blackfoot).

Does this mean I want to invade my own space?  ;;D

Also, some will swear I am part gorilla since I have more hair on my back than my head. I just tell them the rogaine slid off my head from sweating, ran down my back and viola! However if I take my shirt off at the zoo I wind up getting tazered and waking up in a cage.  :o

I guess I don't worry about genealogy too much one way or the other.  I think it's interesting to find out who your ancestors were, as people, and to know something about them.  Biographical information--so that they don't vanish too quickly into the hazy past, as they inevitably will, sooner or later.

But, after all--after ten generations, you may share zero genetic material with any particular ancestor.  The connections multiply exponentially with each generation into the past.  After fifty or so generations, nearly all of us are connected in some way to one another.  In most cases, probably more recently than that.  At base, we're an interconnected species, and not an agglomeration of discrete genetic lines.

Interesting stuff, though....

Best wishes,

George
