Title: REDBULL/VERAPAMIL Alert!!!!
Post by Carl_D on Oct 15th, 2006, 8:43pm
I had an incident a couple of weeks ago where I collapsed in my apartment after having massive heart palpitations and calling my boss to let him know I might be going to the ER if it gets worse. 2 minutes after hanging up, I felt a heavy warm rush over me and passed out.

I just read this on Med-owl from a thread where people was asking 'How many energy drinks are too much?"
I was considering getting some Taurine capsules and trying with my daily supplements and read this:

CAUTIONS

Taurine should not be taken if you are currently on a prescription for Verapamil or any other calcium channel blocker. Until more is learned, it is wise to assume that Taurine may increase the action of Verapamil, which could slow the heart excessively, causing irregular heart beats and possibly a heart attack. It is also not clear if Taurine would interact with other medicines like Sodium Valproate or Lithium.

So if you do the energy drinks, know what the ingredients are, and see if they interact with any of your meds. This is why I cannot use Kudzu, because I am on Verapamil, and as far as I'm concerned, it has helped me more than anything this past year.

Be careful Redbullers,
Carl

Carl,

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you.  But out of curiosity, why can't you use Kudzu with Verap?  I'm not asking to prove you wrong or anything - I'm asking because I was on both at the same time and that's when I had my emergency surgery.  Wanted to know what the theory was against using them together.  If you can elaborate, that would be helpful in my decision to possibly go back on it now that I'm off the verap.

Glad that you're okay!

Carrie :)

I'm not sure the lowdown between kudzu and Verapamil, but Jean "Txbasslady" had asked me if I was ever on kudzu and then when I said I'd try it, she asked if I was on the Verapamil and said Kudzu can exaggerate the levels in the system. So you may want to ask her the specifics on it.

Peace,
Carl

Those using triptans and verapamil are advised that kudzu could interact with these medicines as kudzu affects both serotonin and calcium levels in the blood. (http://www.zooscape.com/cgi-bin/maitred/ZooRide/fountainheadgreen/questt100054/critiquet100054/trait106511)

Thanks Carl,

Not sure it would explain what I went through - our only theory was perhaps the two enhanced any vasodilator effects of verap/kudzu combined and that lead to a hemorrhage for me.  Who knows...

Just glad you're okay :)

:o
Thanks for posting this Carl!  I am on Verap and have been drinking the Red Bulls.  I wonder if this has anything to do with those pesky chest pains...  Guess I'll have to stick with coffee for my caffiene buzz.  Oh well, the Red Bull kind of reminded me of a urine sample when I poured it over ice.   ;;D

I'm staying away from energy drinks and sticking to thick coffee.

Carl,

I'm glad that you're ok! [smiley=hug.gif]

And it's important that you brought this up again. Some of us might have missed this earlier.

Best wishes & PF days to all,
Sanna

I never had any problems drinking energy drinks while I was on Verapamil.  Right now, I'm on a medication called Lyrica that is usually prescribed for epilepsy.  I still drink buckets of coffee and energy drinks though.

When I say I drink a lot of coffee... I'm talking about 5-8 double shots of espresso per day (at least) and about 3-4 energy drinks.  I even bought a coffee shop here on the California Coast just to support my habit.  hehe.

   :o :o :o :o

With that much caffeine in you I'll bet you could swim down the coast to San Diego in Jan. faster than you could drive.

  Wow...please be careful.

The lyrica made me quite tired!  Not sure if that may be the cause of your increased caffeine intake.. ;)

Hope it's helping!

Just a bump in case someone missed this.

Do NOT mix Verapamil with Taurine. It can cause bad things to happen.

Peace,
Carl
