Title: The right focus Post by burnt-toast on Oct 11th, 2006, 7:14pm A philosophy professor picked up a very large and empty jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks about 2" in diameter. He asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar while shaking it lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. Again he asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed it was. So the professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar while shaking it lightly. Of course, the sand filled gaps between the pebbles. Again he asked if the jar was full. With some hesitation the students responded - yes. The professor produced two glasses of wine and poured them into the jar - effectively filling empty spaces between the sand and washing some of it to the bottom of the jar. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are important things - your family, your partner, your health, and your children - Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are things like your job, your house, and your car. Things that matter but only you can decide how important they are and how they fit into your life”. ”The sand is everything else. The small fluff that clutters your ability to focus on the things that are important." "If you put sand into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks or pebbles. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small fluff, you will not have room for things that are important. "Take care of the rocks first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the wine represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just shows that no matter how cluttered your life may seem there's always room for things that wash away the clutter building up between things that are important. These are the things that you simply enjoy”. |
