I hate to tell you this, but about the only *real* way to get rid of the slow-downs, pop-ups, and other bad behavior is to rebuild you system... or switch to a Mac or Linux.

The problem is this... if the bad code has found a way in, the first thing it does is install a thing called a rootkit.  These are undetectable by even the best software.  There are in-depth ways to analyse your system and see if the rootkit is really there, but it takes time and a great deal of expertise.  Even when your so-called spy-ware detectors find and remove the bad software, they can't touch the rootkit that installed it in the first place, so you will get re-infected as soon as the owner of your machine (the rootkit installer) gets around to it.  It leaves a wide-open backdoor that you cannot remove.

If your system has a disaster-recovery CD, you are in luck.  If you save all of your important files off to CD or something, then do the disaster recovery, your machine will be just like it was when you bought it.  Of course, you have about a billion security updates to install after that, but Windows Update takes care of all that ... better hope you have broadband!

Please... just be aware that once you are infected with this crap, it's time to rebuild.

Hey Fu,

Good to see you, and I'm glad we agree on something finally.

Clean reinstall is always best. Make double backups, or even better get another hard drive and install to that. I would try to clear the infection first, so you don't reinfect your new install. Get a USB box for your old hard drive and use it for backups. If you can't do that yourself then you will have to try and trust a computer shop.

Not using IE and not running as administrator will help in preventing future problems.

Paul

Hmmmmm Pop-Ups? Don't use Internet Explorer. Tell your Browser not to accept Pop-Ups.
On the other hand you could install Fedora Core 5 Linux from a discerning server near you. http://fedora.redhat.com/Download/mirrors.html

You could also posess yourself with patience and on Roctober 17th of this very year, and avail yerself of these very same discerning servers and acquire the very excellent Fedore Core 6 Linux.
Currently I run the 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5  Kernel on a AMD Athlon 64 bit X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+. I haven't seen a Pop-Up in several years. Or a virus, Trojan Horse, adware etc.
At this point you're at a cross road. continue on into the future always having these problems. Or getting a system that actually works, more often than not.

Have fun  [smiley=smokin.gif]
