Title: Anyone remember ???? Post by BarbaraD on Oct 9th, 2006, 11:30am Back in the 50s when we were all afraid of the Russians pushing the RED BUTTON. We all had "fallout" shelters just in case. After watching the news this morning, I feel about the same way. Only this time it's North Korea. Is the next step a rise in sales of "fallout" shelters? As I'm understanding all this (and I'm not really very politically savy), nuclear weapons were banned back some time ago, but we invaded Iraq because we "thought" they might have some. Now (we've been in a "cold" war with N. Korea since the 50s) N Korea has just shown us that they HAVE nuclear weapons. And we all know WE have them. Russia probably has them and China too. So where did the BAN come in? Oops, I watched Jerico on TV just one time too many.... Hugs BD PS: and don't eat any lettuce -- it's as bad as spinach. Wonder if someone has something against salads??? |

Title: Re: Anyone remember ???? Post by Cathi04 on Oct 9th, 2006, 1:48pm OK, campers....may I ask a question, since Barb has brought this up?? WHEN(and how did I miss it)..did we get the "all-clear" for chicken?? I'm tired of living in fear.....of the red button, nuclear capabilities, e-coli bacteria, pandemics and, and, and, whatever else I am sposed to live in fear of! I'm going to make a luscious spinach salad for dinner tonight, replete with spinach I have cleaned carefully, bacon I have cooked to a crisp, hard boiled eggs(free range)....and then, I am really gonna live dangerously, as I AM going to make my dressing with the bacon drippings, vinegar and a lil salt and sugar. What part will kill me?? If journalists are gonna scare us with all of this stuff, you'd think they'd have the decency to let us know when the scare was over...... Sheesh!Air-raid sirens and tsunami warnings BOTH also have all-clear signals........Hmmm..maybe that's it! Alll produce and fowl should have a warning sound button and an all clear sound.......... .......and what EVER happened to agent orange?? Soylent green?? Please don't do as I do..after all, in the 50's, when I was a kid, I chewed on wood....with lead based paint......AND, I never wore a helmet when bicycle riding or rollerskating......... Living La Vida Loca, Cathi ::) |

Title: Re: Anyone remember ???? Post by JeffB on Oct 9th, 2006, 2:10pm It's an ever changing world, different than anyone over 25 knows. Of course we who were born in the sixties came into a whole different world than those born in the forties. These are truly scary times, could anyone imagine a nuclear N.Korea 25 years ago. A threatening Iran 40 years ago? Can you imagaine a Venezuelan President mocking our leader even 10 years ago?? |

Title: Re: Anyone remember ???? Post by echo on Oct 9th, 2006, 4:09pm Heard on the news this morning that the bomb Korea tested was equivalent to 150 Lbs of TNT. The bomb we dropped to end WWII was equivalent to 12,500 Tons of TNT. |

Title: Re: Anyone remember ???? Post by Charlie on Oct 9th, 2006, 6:24pm The 50s were fun. Especially the air raid drills and the duck and cover cartoons. Dad was a volunteer Civil Defense member. Every other week or so he got out the yellow issue-CD shortwave and played catastrophe with others in the area. He had fun pretending to be one of a few people left able to communicate. It was fun too. Lots of liquid refreshment and barbeque after the testing. Shit. Pakistan supposedly has the bomb too. Makes me feel good all over. http://www.kolobok.wrg.ru/smiles/standart/scare2.gif?SSImageQuality=Full Don't watch cable news more than once a day. They get so excited when something like this comes up and scaring the bejeesus out of us is indeed a good way to sell Depends and Viagra. Nothing is new. Charlie |

North Korea withdrew from the nonproliferation treaty in January 2003. At the time the U.S. issued a communique', also signed by Japan and South Korea, which states that "the U.S. was willing to talk to North Korea about how it will meet its obligations to the international community," but that "the United States will not provide quid pro quo to North Korea to live up to its obligations." The next month in Beijing with the United States and other nations, representatives of Kim's government claimed that the North possessed nuclear weapons and that it had nearly finished reprocessing the spent nuclear fuel into weapons-grade plutonium. Pyongyang threatened to conduct a nuclear test and, far worse, to "export" nuclear materials -- leaving it up the imagination of U.S. representatives who the "importers" might be. The North then asked to be bought off, with a combination of oil shipments, food aid, security guarantees, energy assistance, economic benefits, and construction of light-water reactors for them. 327.1747 R |

Title: Re: Anyone remember ???? Post by drivin_blind on Oct 10th, 2006, 9:55am I'm a little kid living in Traverse City (at the time). There was a National Guard Air Base there. I can remember the nightmares I had as the fighters flew over our house doing night missions. Then in school we had to learn to hide under our desks, or line up against the hall wall and cover our head and necks. Oh yeah, I remember. Then of course there was the "Cuban Missile Crisis." For years if I heard a siren, I thought the "Big One" was comming. I'm glad to see the world has learned a lesson from the "Cold War" NOT! Dick |

Title: Re: Anyone remember ???? Post by Charlotte on Oct 10th, 2006, 10:03am I liked hiding under the desks at school, but I had nightmares where the a bomb was dropping straight down while I looked up on the playground. Had that one for years. I was so shocked when I turned 20. I saw a long wavy timeline with 80 just a few bumps down, and I had never even thought I would live to grow up. Charlotte |

Title: Re: Anyone remember ???? Post by Charlie on Oct 10th, 2006, 5:27pm Many decades ago, I was at the now pretty much defunct Griffiss Air Base in Rome, New York during an air raid drill. I got to shop there once in while thanks to my Uncle Jim. I never felt so peaceful during something like that. Part of it is knowing that you're with such people and a lot is knowing that if you are hit, it would likely be a ground zero. Charlie |
