My grand daughter's mother (she's the oldest boy's ex-wife, but we are still very close - she's like a daughter to us) had a baby this morning.  Phillip Leroy Kane Moore.  Born 6 lbs, 2.6 ozs and 19" long.  So for all intents and purposes, I am a grandpa again!

He was born with no left hand.  Sad, but in the grand scheme of things, no big deal.  Lots of kids are born in worse shape.  With the love he's going to have surrounding him, he'll learn to deal with that.  The problem is he has pneumonia and also possibly has fluid around his heart.
 
I've seen what the love of this family can do.  Please take just a minute to send baby Phillip your prayers, vibes, mojo, juju or whatever positive force you believe in.

Thanks, bro.  Life isn't fair.  We as adults all know that, but for someone so tiny and new to this world to have such a rough start just sucks.  The beast has been using me for a chew toy here lately, but I'd gladly take a double helping if there were any way it would take this away from him.

 Mike, congrats on the new addition! I am sure that young Phillip is going to grow up to be an extraordinary young man.

 Life is a constant mystery to me ,but one thing I am sure of is that as long as there are loving people like Phillip's new "PawPaw" around everything will work out the way it is supposed to. I can't sum up my belief system into a post that would fit on this board so lets just say that I am sending out all of the positive vibes and prayers that I can muster, and I believe that is a whole heart full!

 Stay strong and pass on our love to the baby and his Mom.

Phillip is going to be fine, he's surrounded by love already and that can only grow. This is just a prime example of "Hello grandad, you just don't have enough gray hair yet so here's a few from me!"

Oh man a new baby, don't worry about the hand, he will be just find. I bet he will throw a ball and do everything another child can do and I bet better !  :)

I will be praying for him, and his family. I will pray for the Doctors also looking after him.

I was born with Pneumonia.  Had issues when I was younger with asthma and bronchitis.  I am still prone to them.  But it is something that you get strong about and live life.

I said a prayer but the mojo and juju is in the mail.  I should have sent them Next Day Air, but I'm too cheap.  SORRY.

I know how frightening this must be for all of you, but let me say that I have seen modern medicine work, with God's help, wonders beyond belief. The hand can be dealt with later.  Let's get the water problem and pneumonia out of the way first.

Is he in a Children's Hospital?

My two sisters, me and our church are praying for your family. The more prayers, the louder the message.

Well, Stillwater Medical Center has done all they can for him, but it just isn't enough.  Phillip was life flighted to St. Francis Hospital's Neo-natal Unit in Tulsa.  Apparently, babies who are born via C-section sometimes swallow/aspirate on amniotic fluid during the birth process.  This can cause the child to have respiratory problems, including pneumonia.

That makes one of my kids and both grandkids, so far, that have been life flighted in the last 3 years.  Lord help the one on the way in Mississippi!!!

What a difference a few hours can make.  Phillip is doing good.  The docs in Tulsa do not think he has pneumonia.  If he keeps progressing like he is, Saumber will be able to bottle feed him tomorrow and he may come home as early as Monday.

I believe this rapid turn around is due in no small part to the love and support from this family.  Thank you all ever so much for everything.  I love you all!

That's wonderful news!!  You and your dear family have really had a plate full of emotions to deal with (and still are).  I hope you are all coping well with the stress that is manified in your lives.

So pleased to see your comment on missing hand. How many of us here would give up an ARM to be free of CH?
Grand scheme of things for sure!

Am reminded of a guy I went to school with up through high school. He also had no left hand. Played EVERY sport, darn near an all  state wrestler, could climb a rope, do pull ups, anything you could do, he could do, and sometimes better. Kid refused to be different. Class act to boot.

Expect Phillip will be also, after all, he's got one to learn from.

You can't know what a relief your last note has been. It's so particularly hard to take when it's the truly innocent who suffer.

The news gets better and better.  Last night, while Jane (my better half for those of you who don't know) was holding him, Phillip's respirations dropped way down to near normal so the nurse decided to try bottle feeding him for his first time.  Little scamp took to that bottle like a champ.  Sucked it down with no trouble at all.  Today, they discontinued the antibiotics and took him off the oxygen.  

I'll spare you the heart breaking pics from the ICU, but here is a pic we just got back from the morning he was born.  Jane is putting Phillip in my and my grand daughter's arms.  Sahara was so excited to get to hold her little brother.

What a relief for you all.  Sounds like he's on his way home soon.  Those first 72 hours are the toughest even when there's just a little problem.

I think we can all learn from your little Phillip, Gator, to never give up and just live life to the max.

The thought of that gorgeous little boy sucking from his first bottle brought tears to my eyes.

Having worked in special care unit before, I was always in awe of how strong they are, much more than us adults I believe.

Sending lots of love and prayers for Phillipe, you and every one else in the family.  :-*

I just wanted to let you all know that Phillip is home safe and sound.  Saumber says he's a happy baby.  He only cries when he is hungry or poopy.  

Sahara is being a great big sister.  She brings her mommy diapers and wipes and stuff for the baby.  She was so cute.  She asked her mom, "Can I pet him?"  She plays with him and holds hands with him.  She did ask why Phillip didn't have any fingers on the one hand, but she's not phased by it a bit.  Saumber told her that is just how he was born and that was good enough for her.  

They have an appointment to see a geneticist in December to try and determine why the hand didn't develop, but other than to check for a possible risk of future medical problems, it really doesn't matter at this point.  He's healthy and happy and he's home.

Thanks for all the support you have given my family.  It is appreciated more than I can tell you.

Mike and family - how wonderful to get some good news in this week of what seemed to be never ending bad things happening to good people.

I'm so glad to hear that things are working out for that little guy.  He sounds like a quite the fighter.

As for the no left hand - remember the pitcher that played in the major leagues that had only one hand and he did amazingly well.  Phillip will overcome this - you just watch and see.

Awww Mike - Sorry I just caught this thread now.  Glad to hear that everything turned out well and that he's home now!!  I knew a girl in high school who had one arm with full fingers, but her other arm only half developed with no real fingers.  She did juuuuuust fine!!  I have no doubt that little Phillip will do great!
