Steph, how do we know, for sure, this is a guy? I mean, this is unreal. Thanks for sharing...I wonder what he was saying and why all the musicians had black shrouds on and its also the first video I've ever watched with an acordian.

When you said you used to do "this" in college - what exactly did you used to do? sing that song?

I used to sing while I was in college. I got a scholarship for my first 3 years...then got pneumonia my fourth and couldn't sing, haven't since.... :-/

And no, you're not stooooooopid....there's no way in hell I could hit that kind of note!!!

Those of us with an interest in opera are aware of the lost voice in operatic performance--the castrato. Castration of young boys in order to preserve their soprano range into adulthood was practiced in Italy from the 16th to the 19th century.

The practice, along with intense training of those upon whom this brutal operation were performed, resulted in a very few great performers who were as celebrated in their day as rock stars are today. The castrato voice is best described as combining the pitch and timbre of the female soprano with the lung power and depth inherent in fully-grown adult males.

There is only one known recording of a castrato--the voice of Alessandro Moreschi, who died in 1913. I've heard it--it's not a great recording. The music selected does not explore the range and possibilities of the castrato voice, and Moreschi was no longer in the prime of his talent, but it is still a haunting evocation of another time, and a barbaric practice that is best left behind forever.
