Title: Now this REALLY pizzes me off.........
Post by DonnaHar on Oct 1st, 2006, 5:35pm
I got my flu shot at my hospital yesterday and today I am sitting here reading the info sheet that they handed out, which says, in  part......

"Some inactivated influenza vaccine contains thimerosal, a preservative that contains mercury. Some people believe that thimerosal may be related to developmental problems in children.  In 2004 the Institute of Medicine published a report concluding that, based on scientific studies, there is no evidence of such a relationship.  If you are concerned about thimerosal, ask your doctor about thimerosal-free influenza vaccine".

So, Moms and Dads, if this concerns you, better ask your doc.

I'm mad that I might have gotten this thimerosal without my knowlege, but if they did this to my child, there'd be hell to pay.

They continue to get away with more and more...aarrrgh!

Isn't it nice they gave you the info after-the-fact?  >:( I'd be hella pissed too!

I will not get flu shots.

Every year that I have, I always get a wicked case of it.

Last time I got a flu shot I had the sickest year of my life... I'll pray that you got the good stuff and your imune system was ready and able to dilute it properly...

I really don't believe that thimerosal is linked to things like autism as was once proclaimed, BUT - I still feel that you should have been handed that sheet before the injection or told up front about that so that you could have decided you didn't want it!  What good does it do you to hear about this afterwards?  Then you end up more mad that you got the injection and regret it!

I've never had a flu shot.  Just have a thing about it.  Last year I was one of only 2 nurses who didn't get it on the unit, as far as I know.  I ended up getting the flu - missed 3 days of work (including weekend time and if you miss weekend time, you have to make it up on another weekend)...and then because my potassium was in the toilet (literally with all that puking!), I ended up having to take a potassium supplement, which I in turn had an allergic reaction to....sending me to the ER and making me miss yet one more day of work!

So no flu shot resulted in me missing 4 days of work and going through a really bad case of the flu!  But still, I refuse to get one this year...  I have my reasons!!

Luckily, in the past I've had good luck with flu shots.  Started getting them when I was working in a Dr.'s office in 1989 and have gotten them every year since....except one.  That was the year that I did get the flu.  I was never sicker than with that bout of flu.  I laid on the couch for 4 days with a high fever, no food, just forcing liquids and sleeping and sleeping.  I was literally out of it for 4 days and than slowley started getting better.

Now, I afraid to miss my flu shots.  They just make my arm ache a little, but nothing worth mentioning.

I haven't had a flu shot since 1978.  There was a bad batch that year.  It knocked me out for several days - just couldn't move.

Well, whether thimerisol can be linked to autism is still an open question for many - the pendulum keeps swinging back and forth as studies are done. It's my understanding that the very latest study shows there well might be a connection.

Even if mercury perservatives in vaccines are not linked to autism, there is still NO SAFE LEVEL OF MERCURY FOR CHILDREN. It's not good for adults, either, but it is REAL hard on the devloping brains of our kids.

Kids may get more mercury from other sources, but remember, the stuff is cumulative - its builds up in fatty tissues, and even tiny amounts such as are in some vaccines must be avoided whenever possible.

Mercury gets into the environment in many ways. Electrical power plants that burn coal is a major source (the mercury is a trace element in the coal).  Waste disposal is another source - discarded fluorescent lights, medical thermometers, automotive and electronic switches, various kinds of pressure and temperature measuring equipment.

People get mercury from the environment mainly from eating fish- - especially long-lived, larger, predatory fish - tuna, salmon, trout, etc. It is the more expensive cuts from tuna and salmon that have the most mercury. For once, cheaper is safer. Here in Pennsylvania, the streams are full of trout, and the wind is full of mercury from coal-fired power plants. So it's okay to catch the trout, just don't eat them.

Sorry for the off-topic rant,

Not so far off topic, tommy.

I only buy small fish and never eat even canned tuna.  I am careful not to buy local (Florida) fish, shrimp, etc. because almost every body of water here is contaminated with mercury or other nasty bacteria.

Our red tide blooms get bigger and last longer every year and I , for the most part, blame the fertilizers used on the numerous golf courses in this state. They are watered until they spill into the streets, even when we have "no sprinkling" bans on. We wonder why the manatees, dolphins and whales beach themselves, and we wonder why the beach is often a carpet of dead fish?  The poor things are sick just like our coral reefs, etc.

Now, we are drilling closer and closer to the shores of the Gulf Coast for a smidgen of oil.

I'd better quit now.

That is disheartening,
Florida is one of the places I would like to dive next year. Not just the Keys, but the springs you have in your state look soooo inviting. Hopefully we won't screw up the coral so bad we can't fix it!

Two things:

Almost certainly not to worry about the amount of mercury you possibly ingested. Thimersol was and is all over the place too.

Of course I had a boatload of mercury fillings in the 50s but then look at me.  :o

You cannot get the flu from a standard flu shot. Flu takes longer to incubate than most colds is all.
