Title: Well, Liz just packed up her stuff and left... Post by georgej on Sep 17th, 2006, 11:04am ...but she'll be back on Thursday. Her company got a contract with the Parks Department to inventory and catalog the artifacts at the Harriman cabin at Harriman State Park in Island Park, Idaho. Otherwise known as the Railroad Ranch, it's on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River between Last Chance and Osborne Bridge--one of the most famous stretches of one of the most famous fly-fishing destinations in the world. They'll be staying in the park, where they'll literally be able to walk out their door, stroll a hundred feet, and find themselves at Millionaire's Pool. The Railroad Ranch was once owned by the Averill Harriman family (Union Pacific Railroad), but is now owned by the state. Fly fishers travel from all over the world to fish there. The worst part is that Liz and her business partner (her sister) DON'T FISH AT ALL. Meantime, since El has school and I have other commitments, I will be pining away here in the city, thinking of missed opportunities and missed fish. Sometimes being an adult is a real pain in the patootie. Best, George |

I will be spending my one of two days off (now that Im a working MoM) on the football field listening to girls cheer (more like bitch moan and groan.....) In a fit of marital viciousness (the kind that only develops after a lot of years) she mentioned how she was standing on the bank of the river as she spoke to me, insisted that I listen to the flowing water, and described how marvelous it all was. Also mentioned that there were a couple of fly fishers around the next bend who seemed to be doing quite well. It truly is a beautiful place. Liz tells me she intends to take lots and lots of pictures. I'll post a few when she gets back, along with appropriate comments. I hope she has a great time. Perhaps it will rain all week. The Railroad Ranch Twenty-seven of the original Railroad Ranch buildings, from the cookhouse to the horse barn, are still intact, furnished and carefully maintained. The famous Millionaires Pool is located directly below the visitor's center. This is probably one of the most scenic spots on the whole river. It doesn't take too long to figure out why the Harriman's chose to build in this area. Mike Lawson had just started the shop then, and Henry's Fork Anglers was the only thing around--a little shack-like building. Now it's pretty tony--a nice shop in a new building, with some very helpful people. There are quite a few other businesses around now as well. Last Chance has always been craziest during the Green Drake hatch in the spring when all the winterized anglers have buck fever, but there's almost always something going on there. I pulled the most memorable hat-floater of my life at Last Chance. (A hat-floater is when you slip and fall in the river and completely submerge. The guy I fished with said the only thing visible was an arm sticking out of the water with a fly rod firmly attached, drifting into the distance. I ended up maybe fifty yards downriver.) Look out over the park property from Last Chance in the spring, and you can almost always see a couple dozen anglers. But as is always the case, if you get a hundred yards away from the highway, most of them disappear. I love that area. Best, George |
