Well, I love spinach. We eat a lot of the bagged stuff, too, and we live in Idaho. Had some just a couple days ago, as a matter of fact. We're all still kickin' and haven't started to behave in incontinent ways, so I guess we're okay. We'd know by now. Think I'll give it a rest for a bit, though, until they track down the source of the problem. Best, George |

Washing any spinach will not help at all--as the bacteria is within the plant itself. It appears that some farms used water from an area that has animal waste --and the E |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by imnotbub on Sep 15th, 2006, 10:13am Great. I once tried to get my kids to eat spinach. I grew up eating canned stuff, so I kinda like it. I had a can in the cabinet for ever, and one day I asked the kids to try it. They refused. I said that if they tried it and didn't like it I would never ask them to eat it again. They agreed. I opened the can of Popeye brand spinach and heated it up, placing a small portion on each boys plate. The shit was gross. It even had sand in it. Needless to say they hated it, and to this day remind me that they never have to eat it again. Now, that doesn't seem like a problem anymore. If I try to say it's good for them, they can just say it might kill them. Steve |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by Melissa on Sep 15th, 2006, 12:40pm I love fresh spinach greens in my salads. It is really good stuffed and baked in fish or chicken too. Spinach takes on whatever flavor you cook it with. I've never had it canned tho, nor would I ever want to! blecch :P |

Blecch is right. In spades. Canned stuff looks and (most likely) tastes like composted lawn clippings. George |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by DonnaHar on Sep 15th, 2006, 9:36pm Put enough salt and pepper on anything and it tastes pretty good. But I do love spinach in any shape or form...except now that I'm on coumadin, I can't eat it. |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by DonnaHar on Sep 16th, 2006, 8:50am I just found out that spinich is in V-8 juice, so now I can't drink that anymore either. Was doing 2 small cans per day.....seems I crave it since they put me on Coumadin. My level got up to 8.2 and they told me not to even blow my nose for a couple of days cause I might start to bleed. Now it's just a little too low, so we're experimenting. You eat lots of veggies to stay healthy and then all of a sudden, there aren't too many you CAN eat. This sucks. Edited to read: Hey, where did Polly's picture go? Gotta go find her now. |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by Charlotte on Sep 16th, 2006, 9:43am I love spinach. I like it canned and fresh. I had a row in a community garden when I was a young adult, and I grew spinach (only spinach). I couldn't give it away. Now I only grow things that thrive on long periods of neglect - like gravevines & gardenias |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by Carl_D on Sep 16th, 2006, 8:20pm The trick to the canned stuff is salt, pepper and a splash or vinegar. ;) I loves me greens. Spinach, broccoli, peas, green beans, cabbage, lettuce....ah I could go on and on. [smiley=mellow.gif] |

That's how my dad used to eat it - with vinegar. As a child, I found it to be disgusting. As an adult, yeah, I'd try it again. |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by Charlie on Sep 16th, 2006, 10:08pm No one in my family ever bought the stuff fresh. Mom always opened a can of it and boiled the shit out of it anyway (try boiled chicken sometime) so it was a tasteless goo. Bleaugh. Charlie |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by jon019 on Sep 17th, 2006, 12:03am Hi boys and girls, I'm a food scientist. Yeah, I know, big deal. BUT, I can tell you a horror story about ANY food you eat. This is just the latest one. I love spinach. This is a nightmare for thousands-millions of farmers, and field workers, and grocers, and restaurants, and packers, and veggie stands, and processors, and consumers, and and and... A little concern for those affected, this aint funny, this is a tragedy. Sad day, Jon |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by Ree on Sep 17th, 2006, 11:29am O get a sense of humor jon..... ::) We still have other foods to eat... its a sad day every day in Bagdad Iraq, or Dafur Sudan! Its a sad day for the homeless walking the streets of every major city in the US. Its a sad day for the Ford Motor co every time the gas price goes up... We all have to take notice of every morsel that goes into our mouths, not just spinach. These things happen. ree |

Title: Re: Watch out Popeye Post by jon019 on Sep 17th, 2006, 4:02pm Sorry Ree, no intention to offend. I've got a great sense of humor, just not about this. My problem, not yours. I regret the "this aint funny" line and wished I had not included it (even before your response). I come from a farm community. Been in the farm/food business since age 12. This latest strikes home.
