Title: Need guitar advice
Post by nani on Sep 6th, 2006, 10:53pm
I'm pretty sure I can get some here.
My 13 y.o. wants to take up guitar. He has a chance to take it in school, and if he likes it, I'll continue lessons. He gets to use one at school, so he won't have to lug it around. I want to get him one for home (so he can practice). What should I look at? I've seen them priced from $69 to hundreds. Do I need a small size? He's not a big kid, yet. Help....

Go here and check these out. Click on "The Mermaid" and bid on it. Money goes to a good charity and it'll guarantee he'll be playing all the time.  ;;D

I think acoustic, Bill. He should learn on that anyway, right? Hell...I don't know, LOL.

nani, get him an acoustic to learn on. don't go spend a bunch till he shows he is truly interested. take him to the local guitar shop and get him what they call a starter pack, usually have a nice guitar ,picks and a tuner and some beginner books all in one box. prob for around 100 to 150.00. if he stays with it he can always upgrade later.

Nani, look into a 3/4 sized acoustic guitar.  You can get a fairly decent one for around a hundred bucks.

We got El one when she wanted to try it out about five years ago.  She didn't keep it up (elected for the flute instead) but we were only out a little money.

El's a lefty.  She played it upside-down like Jimi Hendrix.  Jimi Hendrix she ain't, though....

Best,

George

Most important thing is to have strings ;)

Goodluck on finding a good guitar Nani.

Acoustics are very sensitive to temperature. Keep it in a well controlled environvent at all times or the neck will change and need adjusting. The higher the strings are off the neck, the harder it's going to be to play it. Make sure the neck is straight on it when you buy it. The old saying stays true, you usually get what you pay for. Buying a really cheap guitar that is hard to play may turn off the player. The better he is sounding, the more he'll want to play.

A good way to cheat and learn some tunes quickly is by getting guitar tablatures. (You can find them online free) But the best way to learn is not tablatures, but by learning to read music, and learning music theory, etc.

Hope to hear him jammin' soon.  ;)

Go to your nearest Guitar Center and pick up a Fender Squire. They have some pretty decent looking Strat type guitars with some of them going for aroun $100.00.

This is assuming that you want to get him an electric guitar. You can also get this as a starter package that includes a small practice amp and strap and a couple other things.

Don't let the sales weasels talk you into a bunch of extra crap though.
