Title: An idiot in Phoenix Post by alchemy on Sep 5th, 2006, 10:57pm O.k. folks more adventures of the idiot in Phoenix. This tale is true. As you all may know my wife and I are animal lovers and we love to walk out in the desert in the evening and see the wildlife. Coyote(came close to one tonight) rabbits and the occasional javelina. Well tonight we were out a little later than usual and it was getting fairly dark, as we were almost out of the desert I stepped down and Kathy started yelling, being one who reads lips (can't do that in the dark) I threw my dog to the side and stepped down and felt something squishy. I finally heard the word snake and I jumped really quick. I cannot believe I didn't get bit but coiled up a few feet away was a large rattlesnake. A very pissed one mind you. All I can figure is I stepped close enough to his head to limit his intitial movements. Of course I was in my desert gear sandals which we all know provide great protection ::) |

Them deserts down your way can make walking in the night suddenly very unromantic. Nothing dangerous up this way, I'm just afraid of dark. :) Quote:

And an ultraviolet lantern. Scorpions glow in ultraviolet light--wouldn't want you to have yet another close encounter with yet another venomous species. Royal blue in ultraviolet light. They're kinda pretty. Of course, it could be a bit enlightening and off-putting when you discover just how many there are everywhere around you. Best, George |

That is desert hiking 101. Also, Hiking boots, min half calf and jeans. The idea is that if the snake strikes then it will hit the jeans and not you. Bah..... You are damn lucky. ok inistial rant over. Please be careful. you get sidewinder in AZ as well. They are aggressive asses as well. Please be careful next time. |

Title: Re: An idiot in Phoenix Post by Charlie on Sep 6th, 2006, 4:51pm Forchrissakes be careful next time. The gun works better later in the morning though. Not many rattlers here in New York State but they do exist not far from my little town. Charlie |

Title: Re: An idiot in Phoenix Post by Kingjames1 on Sep 6th, 2006, 4:54pm Hey alchemy- I too was an idiot in Phoenix once, when I was the golf course superintendent at The Wigwam Resort and later at Ancala CC. Came very close to bites several times...those bastards loved to sleep in the pump stations for the irrigation system. I learned to take a flashlight in for the 5am check. The one time I did get nailed was by a scorpion that was in my shoe when I put it on. Ouch! I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the old westerns where the cowboys shook their boots out before they put them on...but I learned the hard way :) |

Title: Re: An idiot in Phoenix Post by Kirk on Sep 7th, 2006, 10:31am Fer evening walks in Nevada I wear my boats, Levis, a .25 Mag. and my walking stick. Usually I have a flashlight, but I have been known to fergit it. A blacklight is really kewl for watching the Scorpions. Although with your boots on they are'nt a prob. Snakes usually find a nice warm rock or sumthin to be under fer the nite. You must have found a lazy rattler. Probably why you didn't get bit. [smiley=smokin.gif] |

Title: Re: An idiot in Phoenix Post by alchemy on Sep 7th, 2006, 11:09am I think my problem is I became very complacent. I hadn't run into a rattlesnake on a walk out here in eleven yrs. Saw other snakes but nothing dangerous. I got preoccupied with the beautiful larger wildlife and forgot to look down to check the path. I'm trying to get into photography and would love to capture a snake like that on film but in better gear. [smiley=smokin.gif] |
