Title: Steve Irwin -The Crocodile Hunter- is dead Post by Dissident on Sep 4th, 2006, 2:03am Been really busy the past month but I just found this out and was wondering if you guys heard the news yet... I figured it would happen but not like this. I feel sad for his family. The Crocidile Hunter is dead! On Monday September 4, 2006, Steve Irwin was reported killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest, whilst swimming to film a documentary off Port Douglas, Cairns Queensland. http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-09-04-obit-irwin_x.htm?POE=NEWISVA Steve Irwin, the Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed Monday by a stingray barb during a diving expedition, Australian media reported. He was 44. The accident happened while Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site. |

Title: Re: Steve Irwin -The Crocodile Hunter- is dead Post by Barry_T_Coles on Sep 4th, 2006, 8:18am From down under & my opinion only. Yes we have lost one of our icons in a way that I and most Australians could never have envisaged but he went doing the thing he enjoyed; to show the rest of the world that the environment we live in doesn’t just belong to us humans; there is an enormous microcosm out there that people like us will never have the opportunity or the guts to go and find. He provided to the world a picture that we would never see if he didn’t do what he did and what he loved. He was an adamant conservationist and a showman and I believe the latter was his demise; he pushed the envelope further than his young age knew for the sake of his commitment. You may hear further down the track that another Australian crocodile hunter, farmer & conservationist Malcolm Douglas predicted that if Steve kept pushing the envelope like he did something would go wrong this may be the case but Malcolm has 25 or more years experience with these prehistoric creatures than Steve had. My thoughts are with his young family who have lost their husband & father. R.I.P. Steve Barry |

Title: Re: Steve Irwin -The Crocodile Hunter- is dead Post by Cathi04 on Sep 4th, 2006, 3:06pm Anyone who has been to the Caribbean has likely done a swim with the stingrays on one island or another. We were taught that the tail had barbs which would puncture, and stick, since the barbs go one way only. So we petted them, swam with them, got up close and personal, but stayed the hell away from the whipping tails! I don't think I'll ever risk that again...and that's sad. It is a wonderful experience, actually :-/. BTW-The male stingray has 2 tails actually.......or, as my husband likes to chuckle....a split tail.. Bet the stingray cities in the Caribbean become nonexistent in the not -too-distant future. R>I>P>, Croc Man......Cathi |

Title: Re: Steve Irwin -The Crocodile Hunter- is dead Post by Fredmyyster on Sep 4th, 2006, 5:40pm Couple of years ago we were snorkeling off Devils Beach on Virgin Gorda when we reached the other side the Mrs decided she wanted to walk back across the lagoon so i snorkled back across alone and half way across i looked up into the eyes of a Barracuda that was 3 to 4 feet from me. Sceered the crap out of me! The reason he was so close was that i had my wedding ring on and he was attracted to the flashing of it when i was cruisin along.... Spooky ! |
