Title: Re: Hard workin people... Post by tanner on Sep 3rd, 2006, 1:49am Darn it Steph, you have a way of making me log back on :) I will need to respond to this thread in the morning also. I had managed to figure out a way to keep working and make a good living around Clusters until I had my back injury (one that money is not going to fix), but what I was doing may help some others on the board so I would love to post the particulars in the next few days. I desperately want to work and get my life back because I am a hard head and won't seek the disability option even tho Linda and my docs think I am crazy! I know that I am crazy and am fairly sure that admitting to being a non-productive member of society would push me over the edge. I will have a more positive read on this issue manana!! GO TO SLEEP.....and have fairy dust dreams :-*...Tim |

Title: Re: Hard workin people... Post by E-Double on Sep 3rd, 2006, 2:09am I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (behavioral psychology) and a Special Education Teacher. I have worked with developmentally disabled individuals for well over a decade in one capacity or another. I taught in several schools and helped start one up. I left my teaching position a few years ago before I was diagnosed and started a private practice in which I predominately ran Early Intervention programs. This worked out really well especially since I was able to create my own schedule which was a benefit since the hits were coming strong. I lecture and consulted through out the NY metropolitan area and was recruited to work for NY biggest hospital system in their Autism center. Now I am teaching the teachers and psychologists. I miss working with kids though. I still get calls and emails for direct treatment which really thrills me but I do not get to provide as much treatment as I like. Now I just help the local mommies toilet train their kids and deal with behavior problems of typically developing brats ;;D |

Title: Re: Hard workin people... Post by georgej on Sep 3rd, 2006, 2:39am Semi-retired. I ditz around with things here and there now, mostly to do with moving OPM (other people's money) around. Buy and sell rare books once in awhile. Trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. Help my wife, Liz, with her consulting business whenever possible or whenever tolerated. Ride herd on a teenager. Fly-fish. Going to the South Fork below the dam to fish the tailwater with said teenager on Monday--should be some good caddis hatches coming off. Full report upon completion if desired. Fall fishing is the BEST. George |

Title: Re: Hard workin people... Post by zwibbs/Scott on Sep 3rd, 2006, 3:47am Besides Education, Masters Degree in Psychology--New School----I started a Trucking Business in 1983. At first we were ICC Contract Carriers for Cummins Engine Company / Farberware / Proctor Paint / NE Lobsters / Otis Elevator........I had 7 trucks--that ran from Charleston, SC--( Cummins ) to Presque Isle, Houlton . ME.......When I got tired of getting up at 1am--to start running an 18 stop load into New England--Mass., New Hanpshire , Vermont---destined to Mars Dept. and Channel Home Center stores, as well as Ames stores----I signed contracts with Gannett ( USA Today ) and The New York Times---This way I would stay local---The only long distance stops were Philadelphia and Boston.....Then in 2001 I had two trucks at the WTC---Five days a week--unloading USA Today and NYTimes Advances-----We pulled out together ---Myself in 1 truck----a NYPD Highway 1 cop in the other-----( Off duty cops are the best workers)-----On 9/11 it was a beautiful tuesday morning so we decided to stop for breakfast at 14th street ( Greenwich Village). The sound of sirens started--Police/Fire/Ambulances----But that is fairly normal in NYC----Right when breakfast was served the Cops' beeper went off---and it never stopped until he checked it and it was his precinct. That's when we knew what was going on----He had to report to his depot in the Bronx---and If I didn't have him in front of me---I never would have gotten out of NYC--We were in a lockdown. The rest is history....But since that day business plummetted. I still run Newspapers in bulk volume, but sales are dismal...........To show you how stupid these Newspaper Companies are.........On September 12, 2001----I came to the plant for USA, And the guard told me the load for the WTC was in Bay 2 !!! |

Title: Re: Hard workin people... Post by Margi on Sep 3rd, 2006, 8:27pm And you do a mighty fine job of that toilet scrubbing too, Jim. ;) Mike is a finishing carpenter, self-employed with about 2 years work ahead of him for one client and many waiting in line - he's a true craftsman and much in demand. He/we took a hiatus from construction a few years back and built a trucking company, hauling oilfield tools all over western Canada. Yep, We've both got our class one license and can drive the big rigs. It wasn't without it's headaches, hiring drivers that took care of equipment (kind of an oxymoron all in itself ::)), insurance rates, fuel costs... the oilpatch crashed here in 1998 and we closed that business and both went back to our roots. Me, I'm a "Business Process Manager" which means I do most aspects of office management (HR, payroll, accounting, supervision of office staff, HSE, that kinda stuff). I've been with this company for 6 years and we are a oilfield service company that does wireline surveying (we tell drillers on surface where their drill string is by bouncing a signal off the satellites that orbit the earth - high tech stuff). I've been in the Canadian oilpatch now for 16 years and, prior to that, I ran a business centre leasing office space and secretarial services to individual companies. Oh yeah, and we're grandparents to Princess Savannah Banana (16 months), too, and also Prince Garrett (3) - now, THAT's the good stuff. ;) |

Title: Re: Hard workin people... Post by Carl_D on Sep 4th, 2006, 12:37pm I've worn many hats... Back to doing something I first did back in 1991. I am a Habilitation Technician, or Hab Tech. I take care of a guy with a brain injury 3 days a week, 12 hour days. He is 25, and was hit by a bus 6 years ago. As a result, he has a hard time walking, and if he falls, I have to pick him up (he is 6' 4" and 250 :o ). I keep him company and am always turning him on to new music and movies. I am lucky in that, it is a job I can do even with the CH and bad leg. If I get hit, I just go to the other room or the bathroom until it is over. The first time I got hit at work, my client didn't even know about it until it was over and I was coming out of it. I went outside to smoke a cigarrette and he looked right at me and asked, "Did you just have one of your headaches?" So even my client understands. My boss, understands because she gets wicked migraines, and she knows that CH is much worse. I consider myself very lucky to have this job. Dealing with someone who has a brain injury can be very trying at times, but it can also be rewarding too. He has been watching me get into working out and trying to get into better shape, and he just got an exercise bike so he can try and get into better shape too. It's cool to know I can motivate him, and he does more for himself now than he did before I started there. My other job is being a musician. Alot of people think being in a band is a big rock n roll party, but there is ALOT of hard work involved. It is definitely a labor of love, as the money is always tight. In fact, I went into more debt being in Hairzilla than I made!!! I have two bands ready to go... they both just need a singer. Until I find that, I am sitting on my thumbs as far as playing out, but am getting tracks together to record. Just missing a couple of elements before I can begin. Such is an artists life. ::) ;;D Peace, Carl D |
